Has anyone made a collection of tunings that MMJ use? Is there any info on the equipment the band uses? Thanks for any help. :)

I worked out a decent deal of Jim's equipment about a year ago here: http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-local/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1156294173

As for his tunings, his big one is the one used for Golden. It's DADFAD capoed at the second fret. It ends up being an Emin chord, which allows for just laying a finger down for a chord, and putting a finger on the G if you want to make it major. A very useful and well-employed tuning.

For "How Could I Know" he used CGCGCE. Where to Begin and It Beats also have interesting tunings, but I can't recall them at current, and would need to do the same amount of digging you need to do to find them. Check out the tabs archive posted here, and you'll find them right easily.

I play "Golden" in E-B-E-G-B-E, capo on 1st fret.  :-?

Well shit, you're right. That's the way I play it...

He does tune to EBEGBE and capo I--why the hell did I get that confused?

HEHEH ^  ;)

This is off-topic and has nothing to do with MMJ, but try open-Esus2 tuning. It's (low to high): E-B-E-F#-B-E
Very nice tuning.
Same as in "Golden", but tune the G down to F#
Beautiful...

I've written a song in DADEAE which is essentially that a step down, but with the high E a step higher than you suggested.

What about the tuning for I Think I'm Going To Hell?  Two things:
1) Who in the hell would try to tune their guitar that high in the first place to the Bb tuning which is:    Bb F Bb F Bb D
2) After breaking three strings, I finally got it on one of my cheap electrics...but is there a relative alternative to that?  Geez, you have to wear goggles to play that thing.

You're going the wrong direction!!  ;D

Tune the strings down, not up.  The difficult thing will be keeping them in tune and keeping them from rattling TOO much, but that will depend on the make of your guitar (and expensive doesn't necessarily mean good). They're supposed to rattle a bit though, it makes it sound even more spooky!

;D Thanks, aMD.  I knew I should have asked you anyway, but I thought I might let you get a kick out of me here in front of everyone.  I'll try it when I get home...from getting new strings.
