Anyone OBH'ers have any advice or concerns as to renting a car for the week?

We are flying in early and are thinking about renting a car to get to our hotel the first night and driving down to Riviera Maya the next day.

Thanks everyone, in advance... see you this friday!

I'm not fully able to respond as I havent rented a car. I have read horror stories of people who have for other functions, issues with car ins and so on.

I have gone off site the past two OBH's, once to Tulum for several days and once into Playa Car. Renting taxi's was so easy and convent that unless u are doing considerable off site traveling to me its easier to just get a cab.

I rented a car for OBH2.  It was a piece of cake.  Easy drive to the Hard Rock.  Easy drive off resort.  Free parking at the Hard Rock.  The car rental price is cheap but the insurance is not.  Ask whoever you have car insurance with what you need to purchase.  The car rental places are a short van ride away (like most large airports in the US, there are free shuttles to take you to the car rental place).

didn't rent a car for OBH2, but did for a day when we were in the same area several years back. I was definitely hesitant based upon a lot of what I had read. Whatever you do not speed...at all! There are definitely a lot of horror stories about tourists getting taken for money by the police. The general consensus is that you never pay the fine directly to the police, which they will try to get you to do. Tell them you want to pay it at the police station.

Also, we drove the car across state line, from Quintana Roo to Yucatan, and that was scary as fack! Total intimidation moment, automatic guns, took my passport and walked away with it, many of the MPs talking for a long time, looking at my passport, not sure what was going on, but it was not enjoyable! Finally permitted to pass on.
