Well chillurn, (stolen from Kevin Russell of The Gourds), it's been Five Years since my first-ever My Morning Crack Hit experience in Austin, Texas as of midnight.   I wasn't sure what to expect.   We had hassled Scott Danbom of Centro-matic to quote something from their song 'Destroyer' into my microphone at the Gypsy Tea Room
(which apparently doesn't allow taping anymore!?!?) on 9/29/01, and he told me that I oughta come down to Austin on October 25 for a band that he was totally obsessed with/into/dominating his playlist - they were called My Morning Jacket and that was all he was listening to - so the preparations were made, I went down there to Austin.   Brent
Best opened, and then it was South San Gabriel, both were excellent.  Then MMJ came out and my world hasn't been the same since.
I know it's hyperbole, but they did change my life.   In fact, I dreamed about MMJ last night for probably about the 15-20th time (is that weird?!?)   Any other MMJ dreamers out there?   I am sure that there are.     The following two years I spent all of my free time following them around and hearing some of the greatest music ever recorded.    And not to mention the comedy effect of Jim James, who later, according to legend and my own red-eyed mind, became "my son".   I'll probably be punished in a later life for such absurdity, but as I used to tell 'em as I espoused their cause and music, "no punches thrown, no restraining orders issued!"     As Dustin Hoffman (Benjamin Braddock)
said in 'The Graduate' when he was sitting in on classes at Berkeley, although not enrolled, 'they've been very congenial about it"
So while the brews are flowing and there has to be a point here, or so one would hope, I am offering up the 10/25/01 show that I taped in Austin.   Don't have the setlist here in front of me, but they did stuff like The Bear, Lowdown, The Dark, War Begun, It's about Twilight Now, Strangulation, Picture of You, OBH, PWW, Tyrone (Jim solo),
an unbelievably excellent show.    As I said earlier, it was a life-changing event - just as several of your first-MMJ live shows most certainly were!    Nuff sed.    I will send this to someone who wants to tree it should there be any interest.
I am sure that we did this here last year as well, so it's out there somewhere.    Have fun and tell them to buy more My Morning Jacket albums!

Thanks for offering, I guess if anyone who doesn't have it wants it, they'll ask.  It was a happy five year anniversary!   I listened to the entire show.  Jim was hilarious, as always.  He dedicated to the show, or possibly just Phone Went West, to the MSG in his throat from the shrimp downstairs and made bogus claims that they had cassettes of this performance available after the show.  I ended up buying both At Dawn and The Tennessee Fire after the show and within two days I was driving around and astounded at the quality of these albums.  Anyway, I'm looking forward to the tour and to meeting some of you fellow Freaks in Dallas and Nashvegas.
