so many to choose from. But i think my mind exploded during Red Rocks 2012 Dondante.
Can you keep it simple? Can you let the snare crack? Can you let it move without holding back?

This very forum introduced me to a live war begun from https://archive.org/details/mmj2004-01-21 in an earlier version of this thread. I would say from shows I have been to that the one big holiday from it still moves night at t5 was the best version of that song they will probably ever play considering it had johnny quaid and Carl and danny cash and bo playing on it...

Also, on archive.org they have two Louisville shows from2003 up and the Phone is incredible... The whole crowd screams along. Even though thru the years the jams on phone have gotten more intricate I myself still love the simple power chord breakdown they used to do when quaid was still w them. I also love the video from Texas in 2003 where Jim spins around and around during it. LinksMy Morning Jacket - Phone Went West (6/3/03) - https://archive.org/details/mmj2003-09-26.shnf

Holy shit! I love that Johnny Cash song! I've never heard Jim play that before...
Thanks for posting.
Great version of PWW too

Seen a lot of good Dondantes but that one at OBH2 was probably the best IMO

Cobra at the Wiltern 2012 is up there too. Floor was shaking.. Went right into Run Thru. That was just the end of the first set too!! Damn that was a good show!

I think War Begun from OBH2 should get a nomination for best live version of that song.

I don't think I've ever heard a version that got as out there as that version did.

There was a little lull in there about 3/4 in, and then it picked up and became something extra special.  The last few minutes of it..... wow.

Good question!  I actually forgot about that, but I remember being blown away when Jim just wouldn't let the song end and they ended up jamming for another 3-4 minutes.

Which reminds me, I LOVE how much they were improvising at OBH2 (or at least seem to be improvising).  They pushed the limits a bit, weren't afraid to make some mistakes - which is a great sign of an ever improving band (see Dead, Grateful for reference). That's what it takes to be one of the great psychedelic rock bands.

BTW, another tidbit from the guys whilst at OBH.  Apparently they've been listening to a lot of Grateful Dead recently.

That was, hands down, the best "War Begun" I have ever seen!!!
HOLY SHIT was that a BIG & DIRTY jam...!!! (clocked in a lil' over 10 min, I believe)

100% agree. I realized when this song was over that I hadn't moved an inch... I just stood there, overcome with emotion from the raw energy of MMJ. Man, that was epic. I will NEVER forget how I felt throughout OBH2's War Begun. God bless MMJ.

How about Port Chester I Think Im Going To Hell? I know Okonokos is a sick version, but Port Chester is bone chilling!

My first and only live MMJ experience so far was OBH1, and I listen to the War Begun from that show at least every week (and it plays on my mental MMJ Radio almost every day).

So if the OBH2 version is even better, I can't wait for the download.

Didn't make it to OBH2 as I live in Hong Kong, so it's quite a way.  Regrets?  Oh yes.

Come Closer

My initial impression was that the War Begun from OBH1 was better

PWW and Dondante from Red Rocks 2012 need to be mentioned. I also remember Off the Record from the Mann in Philly 2011 being pretty damn epic but have yet to see any recordings surface from this show. Anyone?

Mann Center in Philly in 2011 was such a great show.  I remember looking for a while after it for recordings, but I couldn't find any at that time. I don't know if any ended up surfacing since then, but I don't think so.

Meriweather Post 2012 had a really killer Cobra.   Loved the Cobra from Port Chester too, but the MPP Cobra > Run Thru > Cobra was something else......

There are recordings of this show out there although not the quality of the official ones.  Great show though, one of my favorites.  Have a feeling they will be hitting MPP in July, can't wait.

Man, it's hard to decide...

IWBTWYD RR 2012 - I had never even heard the song before and it made tears come out of my face.

As far as Dondante...MSG '11 got me hooked, RR 2012 blew my mind and OBH1 & 2 took it to another level. As far as shows I wasn't at the Dondante from the Somerset show with Trampled By Turtles '12 had a ridiculous version.

Steam Engine from OBH2 killed it.
