My Morning Jacket Plan a Double Surprise

By Jason Newman

The psychedelic-rock crew will return with two albums over the next two years

My Morning Jacket have stayed relatively quiet since they released 2011's Circuital, but they're about to make up for lost time: The band is currently finishing work on two new studio albums, one due in April, the other in 2016. "I just had tons of songs this time," says frontman Jim James, checking in from the Portland, Oregon, studio where the group is mixing the first of the two LPs. "We didn't even get to all of them."

Late last year, James reconvened the Jacket at a studio near San Francisco to start work on the tunes he'd stockpiled since their last album. "There was no rehearsal period," James says. "We could just jump in and start rolling tape. It was really fun." They ended up with 24 solid contenders, splitting them up into a pair of stand-alone discs, which they're still in the process of sequencing. "I love making each record sound different," he says. "I love the thrill of putting on a record and feeling like you got the wrong one from the factory."

That's not all: The singer reveals that he's also begun work on a follow-up to his 2013 solo set, Regions of Light and Sound of God, which he hopes to finish in time for a 2016 release. "The Jacket is about creating a circle of power," James says. "The solo record is more of a patchwork."

... since they released 2011's Circuital,

Has it really been almost 4 years since we've had a new MMJ album? I guess the JJ solo album broke that time period up and that's why it doesn't feel quite that long. Regardless, this is great news!

Unless they plan on doing something similar to the Circuital release show in L-ville, I'd be shocked if we don't hear some of the new tunes at OBH.

DidnĀ“t they play the song Circutal on some shows before the album was released ? I remember seeing some youtube videos and recall the excitement for a new song here.

I'm so happy reading that report that I couldn't help but getting a huge smile.  I felt like jumping up and down at my desk at work and then scrolled down to see kermit doing just that.  Way to go SaraBanana....perfect interpretation of probably all of us reading the awesome news.  I love the old stuff but can't wait for the new stuff.

Looks like mixing is done and this puppy (at least the first album anyway) is getting mastered as we speak at Gateway Mastering, by none other than Bob Ludwig! I imagine/hope a release date will be announced imminently -- hopefully before Christmas! Ain't no better way to welcome an early spring than with a new album and subsequent tour. Bring on 2015!
