They've covered "Loving Cup" before too. Super good.

Here's a taping of the set when they played it at bonnaroo 06: https://archive.org/details/MMJ2006-06-16..4011s

And I was at that show too. Do NOT remember that but it obviously happened. Gotta stop smoking the green

Anyway, more Rolling Stones covers! Haha

We were below their room (bottom floor, stage front, Jim's side) and played Rolling Stones LOUD on our jambox literally the entire last day in attempt to "summon" a Stones cover... and they played one ("Happy") which I believe is a first for Jacket (playing a Stones cover).. it was a first for me at least.

Miss You was played at T5, FYI.  Can't think of any others off hand.

Thanks.. I would love to see that btw

it was a perfect transition of Miss You>Cobra, one of my highlights of the 5 nights.  I'm still holding out hope for a T5 complete release at some point.

Would love to see them cover more Stones!  Happy was definitely fun.

No Expectations!!!!!! WHAT!! When?? That's my favorite Stones Song, why I don't know, I guess its just the way that he sings, not the words or the band. That would've been amazing with Carl on Slide.
Mona Lisa must'a had the highway blues, you can tell by the way she smiles.

First off, OBH2 was just another amazing experience courtesy of the greatest rock band of our generation!  I can't say that OBH1 is superior to OBH2 or the other way around, they were just different .. which is awesome!  OBH1 was a continuation of possibly the best tour they've had and OBH2 was the beginning of what may be even better!

This really sums up my wife and I's experience + just a bit better food, drinks, service and company.  Thank you to best album and touring band around.  We plan to attend as many, if not all, future One Big Holiday's.

Hope to see many of you on the road in 2015

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

I just posted this in a different thread, but have been wanting to hear others take on my feelings on this since OBH. Please explain to me if my perception of the situation is off...

I don't care for Conor whatsoever. He definitely comes across as a total ass. Surprised there has been no discussion of this in all the OBH threads, but I thought Conor was a total prick for coming on stage obviously anebriated, dancing around almost knocking shit over. Dude...nobody came to see you! Then when he comes back out for the encore he spills half a beer on himself and the stage. Attention whore much?  I know people will defend him but I found him to be beyond disrespectful to MMJ and their fans at OBH.

My top 4 things about OBH 2

4.  The late night with PHJB.  I had been excited for this show since the schedule came out, however I was drained by the time it actually started and planned to stay for just a couple songs.  However, the music and energy of the crowd was amazing.  We ended up dancing all night.  Lets hope they stay on the bill for the future.

3.  Band of Horses acoustic set.  There were moments where it felt like I was having a beer at a friends house and some of them started playing instruments.  Ben and the band were laid back and interactive.  They took requests from the crowd and even played a song(by request) acoustically that they had not attempted before (Infinite Arms, I think).  I met Ben a couple times on the trip and he was so open and friendly.  He is a BIG fan of his fans.  I loved BOH going into the trip and this only made me like them more.

2.  My Morning Jacket.  Without a doubt, my favorite band.  They never disappoint me.  Each night was special for its own reason, nights 1 and 2 had awesome set lists and night 3 had so much fun and positive energy.  Not only did they kill it on stage, they get huge props for curating such an incredible experience.  There may be more popular bands out there, but the MMJ/fan relationship is difficult to top.

1.  The people.  The staff at Coud9 thought of everything.  The people working at the resort were friendly and hard working.  Several band members from various bands were surprisingly accessible, outgoing, and gracious.  But overall, it was the fans in attendance that made the experience. There was a Grateful Dead-like comrade.  People were kind to each other and the staff and a great time was had by all.

"To every little action, there's a reaction..." -Bob Marley

I find Conor Oberst to be a musician of extraordinary sensitivity and insight. It is only in the last year or so that I have really gotten into his catalog, but his emotive intensity and acuity with language are sometimes hard to grasp. I play his newest album on repeat...and I still cannot fathom how someone is so capable at elucidating abstraction. And I think when one possesses such sensitive proclivities, trying to auto-tune those frequencies can be difficult, at best.

But, to tell you the truth, there were a couple moments throughout the experience wher I felt a kind of alienation from the whole scene, with regard to over-intoxication. I haven't partied in a long time, and watching a lot of it unfold left me feeling like I no longer belong in the "rock n roll" lifestyle.  But then I realized that every person, and every situation, are really just mirrors of my own inner reality.  Everyone around me, just like Conor, cannot be reduced to a snapshot of their existence.  Everyone I met...regardless of whether they were drunk or tripping or sober...were really kind-hearted, interesting, and worldly people...and none of them could/should be defined by a transient state of action...just as I cannot be informed/gain wisdom thru a single perspective. I think that the beautiful theater of it all is that there is this amalgam of energies...coming from everywhere, existing everywhere...and to try to control it by limiting its expression to how I think it should be, really distracts from the witnessing of what it is.  It's weird to say that even when there are surprises, like Conor showing up, that we, as human beings,  instantly formulate expectations of how they should play out...but I think that the greatest teachers are the ones that defy our expectations.

I truly learned that regardless of one's "state of consciousness", that it is the labeling of things as good/evil...wrong/right...drunk/sober...that creates the conflict of duality within ourselves.  As Jim said, "Hell is within...Heaven is within...Hell is without...Heaven is without..."

I read this article with Monsters of Folk...and Conor is talking about some time that he and Jim were staying at a friend's garden house when it was freezing, laying in sleeping bags, giggling...wondering if they were going to die...
http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2009/09/in2004-conor-oberst-m-ward.html

That's what I thought of when I saw him perform. When I saw him and the boys hugging each other, having fun.  I felt really blessed to have a snapshot of seeing someone I really admire perform...I found him weird and unpredictable...the court jester.

On a side note, I had a really interesting thing happen during "Steam Engine".  I have always felt a connection to that song on an intensely individual level...and have listened to it performed live, and on bootlegs, literally thousands of times.  But in Mexico, when it went into the "To anyone who wondered..." part...I looked around at this sea of people singing, and all of a sudden, this typically individual experience was washed away by this sea of people who love it as much, if not more, than I do, singing at the top of their lungs...and it was so fucking transcendent...to move from the kind of 'eros' understanding of it...to the 'agape'...to witness the movement from isolation to unity.  It was so epic, man. That happened over and over again.  I felt like I was seeing them for the first time.

A few other favorite moments:

1) The whole gutteral, like tribal singing thing Jim was doing was so rad...he slipped into these like 30 second chants throughout...it was really mystical...hope other folks caught that shit.

2) The transition from Stir it Up back into Phone was FLAWLESS.  There was like a 3 riff bridge that literally blew my mind. I listened to it again on YouTube because it took my breath away.

3) Everything that Dawes and Dr. Dog touch. Taylor Goldsmith is slowly turning into one of my shadow puppet heroes. That dude loves everything that he is doing and it shows.  It is rare to see someone with that much childlike enthusiasm for music.

4) All those fucking fine people. Good Lord what a goddamn bunch of folks.  I didn't meet one asshole the entire time I was there.  The most accomplished, accessible, down-to-earth bunch of weirdos you could meet.  Twas a thrill, gang.

Only memories remain... hehehehe...

See you out on the creature trail!

Soooo...did you think Conor was a little disrespectful? Or was that just me? Admitedly, not a fan of his persona, so I'll be the first to admit my perspective may be skewed. I love his voice and many of his lyrics. Don't care for his ego.

I don't really know to whom or what it would be disrespectful...when in Mexico, do as the tourists do...

I think as far as the ego/persona are concerned...that's all part of the theater, is it not?  Performers masquerade as all sorts of characters, if they didn't, it wouldn't be interesting.  So much of our iconography about rock n' roll stems from these archetypal characters.  We like them a little weird...a little dangerous...we even like it when they piss us off...like John Lennon with the whole "bigger than Jesus" thing, or Jim Morrison with the "lewd and lascivious" behavior.  There's something about it that confronts our notion of what is acceptable or comfortable. I honestly think he is smart enough to know that...Whether or not he was conscious of how he was performing or being perceived, on some level, everything is intentional.

There have been some recent interviews with the band about the whole 'tortured artist' myth being a crock of shit...but in one way I agree with you, that the whole vibe, Conor in this particular instance, didn't serve to dispel that. When it comes down to it, I don't care what anyone does, at least be fucking original.

I think even the theme "One Big Holiday" is a really interesting notion.  I have begun to  think the idea that your life can be this never-ending party is kind of a self-serving exercise in futility. I actually feel guilty knowing how much it cost to go, knowing how many people I could have helped with the money.  But then I talked to a lot of people who really view the entire experience as a kind of pilgrimage...an oasis on the quest to find your 'musical dreams'.  I don't know if that is justification, or if it really is a pivotal marker on a personal roadmap...I suppose it is all in what you do with it.  And I'm not saying that either choice is right or wrong...I just think the juxtaposition of the two are points worth considering.

But one thing is for sure, I can't sit back and criticize the 'doers' while I sit back and watch.

walterfredo

Thanks, I always appreciate others perspectives.  I honestly posted out of curiousity if my perception was the minority. I do think there's no harm in criticism. I realize some find any amount of criticism or critique unacceptable (this forum is notorious for snapping on folks that say the slightest negative thing about MMJ). Theater. Ok. Do I have to like it? Do I have to respect it? Because he's doing and we're watching? I would never in a million years make these comments if a performer chose this "theater" at their own performance...that's their stage.  It wasn't his stage. Just one person's perspective. All in all, an extremely minor observance toward the awesomeness of the event. Respek!

I do think John Lennon was bigger than Jesus.

BigHerm

I thought Conor was incredible. Great energy and looked like everyone on stage was having a blast.

Well I feel like the grumpy old man (stay off my lawn!).  Obviously Conor has a lot of fans in these parts, I'm glad he was enjoyed.

I liked that it was raw and he was spilling beer all over himself - he was just that into it!  We have plenty of time this year and next for structured sets and all the seriousness that comes with the new album release and we'll be longing for some spontaneous curation or sloppy night 3 in Mexico action!
