I just read that Hard Rock is building a resort in Playas del Coco, Costa Rica. I LOVE Costa Rica and have traveled there several times, and I LOVE MMJ, but if it is there, I may need to boycott. Costa Rica is no place for large, foreign owned, mega resorts. I cannot believe the government would allow this after the ones that were already built have such horrible environmental records and have diverged precious fresh water away from villagers so that rich gringos can take 20 minute showers several times a day. Also, Costa Rica is so rich in things to see and do, being sequestered in a resort that is a long drive to the really cool stuff would drive me crazy. I really hope they don't bring OBH there.

As a two time OBH, I have to say that the food sucked this year. 3 out of 6 of us got sick. We won't go back to Riviera Maya because the food was so bad. Also, we need a beach, not necessarily to have the stage on a beach, but to play in the surf all day. Spending $4,000 and not being able to play in the ocean all day really sucks. I hope they move it to Punta.  :drum:

Food is AWFUL at HR. I'm not even that picky and can get by eating plain rice for days (and I've done that very thing), but we opted to not wait in endless lines for dinner and loaded up on lunch and/or whatever was out in the courtyard during the shows. Would a veggie burger option at the poolside buffets kill them?

They really need to step up their game in that regard, and work on the food handling issues that made a few people miss shows this year.
God sure baked a lot of fruitcake, baby.

There is ocean access just down the road either way away from the Hard Rock Riviera Maya.  Probably just a cheap taxi ride away.
Cuz it's been so long since someone shattered me.

^hotel wanted to charge us $120 for a taxi to the beach this year.

Okay - that isn't cheap at all.  Yikes!

Are you sure it wasn't 120 pesos to a beach which is less than $10 it was only $25 to go into town which has a beach

We caught a cab from the lobby to Xpu-Ha for no more than $10. Beautiful beach, cool little beach bars, no problem. Another day we split a cab with some other folks for $60 to Tulum.

Taxi to near by beach at RM was super cheap.  Cost us like $2 per person, 8 people.  Beach and food were amazing.

Personally I would muh prefer RM for a 3rd year.  DR is so much further and flight cost are more than I want to pay for all that I am taking.

Rumors of the DR seem like no big seller.  Not great sound quality, dancing on sand sucks, drinks spilled on sand really sucks, DR folks not quite as friendly as MX folks.

I can certainly understand wanting someplace different, but there is still so much that I havent done in MX, it'll be like a whole new trip.  DR doesn't have quite as many things to do.

Plus MX is super cheap.  One piece of advice, don't do anything through the resort.  Look for alternative tours or catch a cab and see things on your own.  Will save you hundreds.

If they move to the DR this year, I'm sure there will be a lot of fans passing just on shear cost.

I'm a bit confused.

R/T tickets to Punta Cana seem to run $200 to $300 more than those to Cancun - certainly not a negligible increase, but I have to doubt that it would be a deal breaker for many folk.

A cursory Google search reveals a very similar set of available activities.

A 200-300 increase to an already expensive trip is definately felt by me.  I also have the spousal multiplier in effect and was considering bringing my daughter next year so that could tack on as much as $1000.

Not only is it more expensive to fly to DR, but it also adds a lot of extra travel time to your trip, half a day to a whole day if I'm not mistaken. Direct flights to Cancun from numerous US cities make it so much easier for many folks, especially those flying in from overseas. Drizzler talked to someone who works with Cloud 9 at the Anders Osbourne/North Mississippi Allstars show in Austin a few weeks ago and they said that they were pretty sure it would be back in the good ol' Riviera Maya!

Actually have to totally disagree on the available activities. Where can you climb a pyramid in DR or swim in a cenote? Are there even ruins of significance in DR? We've left the resort on every day while at both OBH's and haven't even scratched the surface on places to go and things to do. My buddy who also went to both OBH's is going to the DR this summer for a wedding and he said that there isn't nearly as much to do. Really glad to head back to Riviera Maya!

Then there is no real cause for concern or debate, it would seem.

Being a relative newby, will there be an official OBH3 Topic posted soon?  Or will this board be that?

Could the potential change be attributed to the unrest and gang related crime in Mexico?  I heard the other day that there were travel warnings and cruise ships were avoiding certain ports.  Just a theory...

sillyboob

Quintana Roo isn't one of the states in Mexico with a travel advisory.  Those travel warnings are mostly for the states that border the US, and Sinaloa.  Quintana Roo has a lot of tourist destinations, and the narco-violence has stayed clear of those locations for the most part.

Why not just do it right here in the d USofA? They'd probably double their ticket sales.
God damn those shaky knees.
