I thought for sure they'd play the Prince song on the show. Oh well, two songs are better than none.

The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Of course, these Prince covers are awesome. One issue w/Purple Rain... seems Jim is late delivering the end of the first verse, then early delivering the second line of the second verse. He's done this during each of the three times they've covered Purple Rain (OkC, Houston, NOLA). Kinda drives me nuts.

YAC idk about you but im a little dissapointed in these setlists....From what I've heard, theyve SOUNDED amazing, but its the same songs every single show I feel like. I dont get it!

I agree. Mmj never disappoints in their delivery but the setlist was "eh" to me. Granted, they only have 90 minutes but I'm all for opening it up a bit. It seems like they're trying to appeal to the masses. Any fan of great music would love to hear Steam, twths, lay low, war begun, Xmas curtain, Bermuda highway, master plan, at dawn, hell, phone...on that note, off the record, and believe were excellent. And the purple rain cover was easily the song of the weekend for me

It seems, with each new tour, comes that question about setlist depth and diversity.  I recall being quite disappointed that there was very little difference in the first three shows of their Spring 2010 tour.  I attended all three- Birmingham>Nashville>Atlanta.  At that point, these were my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th MMJ shows.  At the end of Atlanta, I was frustrated as I'd yet to hear Steam Engine and many, many other tunes.

The key to depth and diversity is the multi-night run.  I know those opportunities are not available to many, but in large markets like Boston, New York, Chicago, LA, and San Fransisco there have been a number of 2- to 5-show runs, with no repeats.  Festival sets will always get short-changed due to length of set and the fact that the crowd is not there just to see MMJ.  So, Jazzfest, Shaky Knees, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, ACL, and other fests will always be a bit underwhelming to MMJ fans in attendance.

As for the sets in Oklahoma City and Houston, they chose to dedicate 2-3 slots to Prince and seem to be holding close to a 2-hour show, which prevents some older, deeper tunes from making the cut.  I'd strongly recommend folks participate in Spontaneous Curation, as it does influence setlists.  We're all going to have to expect Victory Dance, Circuital, Spring, Believe, One Big Holiday, and Off the Record at damn-near every show.

Great analysis.

I know fests are always going to be more "standard", but I also have a feeling shaky knees might (hopefully) be a little different, after all the Fest is named after Steam Engine.

As for everything else, I just feel like they will never get to where they want to get (popularity wise) if they do these same songs everywhere. Take for instance, Widespread Panic (Granted, more "jammy" and many more songs). It takes them 4 shows before they play the same song again! It creates that feel of "chasing" a song for their fanbase, and adds to the excitement. May just be me, but I feel Jacket should follow a format more similar to this.

Who knows! Just glad theyre back on tour!
