Mountain Jam is announcing lineup additions tomorrow. Despite reports to the contrary, still really, really hopin' MMJ is on there.

I really don't think Mountain Jam is going to happen unfortunately. I predict the 3rd headliner will be Tedeschi Trucks Band/Mule Saturday night, they have a nice break that fits perfectly within Mountain Jams schedule. Only thing that could prove me wrong is the Saratoga Springs a few weeks later, although I doubt that makes a difference.
If not that I can see a Allman Brothers tribute type thing for Butch Trucks.

I just don't see Jacket being added to a NY festival when they already claimed no other NY dates. I would love to be wrong though.

Thankfully we don't have to wait long to find out! Petty is playing Saturday night, and Frampton/Steve Miller are the Sunday headliners, so I think we're looking at whoever will be playing on the Friday.

Fingers crossed!!

Word on the Bonnaroo forum is that they are out for Mountain Jam but will be headlining Friday night Peach Music Festival. Widespread Panic will be headlining Saturday and Sunday and Joe Russo's almost Dead Thursday. Umphreys and Lettuce are Late night acts.

I guess i'll be heading to Scranton in August if this is true.

This was all found out during OBH so take it for what its worth.

If someone runs into any of the guys after the set tonight, PLEASE ask them about their touring plans for 2017!!!! Any further details would be HUGELY appreciated!

Take with a grain of salt but random rumors included:

-Possible 3 night run at Red Rocks over Labor Day weekend
-2 shows at Ascend in Nashville
-Headlining Friday at The Peach Festival
-Not playing Mountain Jam

No major tour in 2017

TWO shows in NASHVILLE! HOLY THAT WOULD BE AWESOME

What no "Throwback"? ah well, can't wait to hear that one again, live or in studio...

Unless phish skips dicks this year, which some rumors say they might, can't see mmj doing red rocks the same three days. Would seriously cut into their draw locally.
I think Phish mentioned there was no Fall tour this year.  Just the 13 shows at MSG

true, but the Dicks run has always been part of the summer tour for them. They definitely have a hold on the venue that weekend, whether or not they will exercise that hold we just don't know. Regardless, I highly doubt they both play in Denver the exact same three days. But...as long as one of them does, I will be there. If by some crazy chance they both do, well that will be a huge problem for me!
And a gift for me... no issue here and a bonus of phish friends post show.

How do we have no reports of the other acts? Or carl solo?

I'll do it:
Lucius: probably don't really have enough good material to fill a long set. Covered Wonderful which was cool but kinda weird, to me they just kinda ran out of steam.
Pres Hall: both sets were great, set after the Super Bowl was way short like 40 min. They've definitely put a few younger guys in the group since last OBH
Kurt Vile: not really familiar with him but it was entertaining
Gary Clark: clearly had nothing to do with mmj, just playing a gig. Danny Clinch played harmonica on a few songs
Deer Tick acoustic: carl sat in for 3 songs on sax or pedal steel. Vanessa Carlton came out for a song (she's married to deer ticks lead singer)
Carl: Bo and Tom were in his band. 4th of July was great, ended with a great cover of Gimme Some Truth
Head and the heart: not really super familiar with them but they were the best of any opener by a pretty good stretch. Crowd was pretty into it.
Deer tick late night: really loose but fun towards the end the drummer broke his kick and they spent so long trying to fix it by the time they were ready they did one song and it was 2:30 and they got kicked off the stage.

When are they gonna bust out "Devil's Peanut Butter", the most under-rated song of all time?

Just to touch on a few things that Sheets of Clay said:

Lucius got the crowd going pretty well.  The girls were there the whole time adding background vocals for MMJ.

Pres Hall were excellent.  Their post-Superbowl set was cut way short though.  But a lot of fun.

Deer Tick's mellow set was fun.  John Joseph McCauley (the lead singer) kept screaming out how this was their MELLOW SET!  An interesting stage setup across the lagoon.  No keyboards for Deer Tick - I read the keyboard player quit about a month before OBH.

Kurt Vile played good alternative rock, sometimes with a banjo.  Enjoyable, but not very memorable.

Gary Clark Jr put on a good show, but he wasn't very engaging.  No cover songs that were readily recognizable.  He missed the boat here - it was Bob Marley's birthday and a Bob cover or two always goes over great with this crowd.

Carl's sunset show was really really good.  I've read a couple people say his set was their favorite of the festival.  Good to have Tom & Bo playing with him, and Tom got an impromptu "Happy Birthday" sung to him by the crowd.  Carl let his other guitarist take the solo on 'Carried Away' which was great.  Two covers - Once In A Lifetime by the Talking Heads (Carl solo) and a rocking version of Just Give Me Some Truth to end his set.

The Head & The Heart were very good as well.  It was great enjoying the concert pavilion foods (those taco stands were outstanding!) while getting great music.  Let's Be Still was a standout tune, along with Tom Petty & Crowded House covers.

Deer Tick's late night set was fun and loose.  Deer Tick are either professional musicians with a drinking hobby or it's the other way around.  Either way, a fun set, albeit with some technical issues.

I really liked the setup for the late nite sets this year compared to 2015.  The stage setup, while small, was better positioned for that area, and the sets were great.

Next post covers (pardon the pun) the covers played.
Cuz it's been so long since someone shattered me.

Not really.  I recall a see you next year though :cheesy:

John M took a few minutes at the sunset set to apologize to Vanessa for his previous night antics of drunk pissing in the corner of the room

My first OBH and I will be back next year for sure.

I may be in the minority but I love the cover songs. But I might suggest something different. The covers do seem to get in the way of a freight train MMJ set, so instead of sprinkling the covers throughout the sets, why not make night 2 a superjam (like bonnaroo) and dedicate 2 hours to covers with support from the other bands. Jim's rock and soul superjam at roo was a life changing set for me and I would love to experience that again.

Then keep nights 1&3 to pure MMJ for the extended sets. Deep cuts and long jams especially welcome!

Thoughts?

ALady

^^^ I like that idea quite a bit.

I've been holding my tongue as this is a criticism of OBH that I've articulated in the past BUT to pay thousands of dollars and not get a

Knot Comes Loose
I Needed It Most
By My Car

etc... is criminal. I have no doubt that everyone there is having a rollicking good time and I am undoubtedly jealous of anyone there but cmon man! Seriously...

Total agreement here. I was really hoping for some more deep cuts. I'd love to hear By My Car again someday.

Really, on their "off day", they should play their own sunset acoustic set. Death is the Easy Way, If All Else Fails, Knot Comes Loose, One in the Same, etc.

LOVE THIS IDEA HOW DO WE GET IT TO THE HIGHEST ECHELON OF MMJ

Quote from: parkervb on Feb 09, 2017, 09:39 AM
How did Jim's voice sound?

I thought he was in great voice. One of the covers - Father Figure, maybe? - I was really struck by his mellow tone and soulful inflections. I haven't heard him sing like that in a long time.

This was my first OBH and I'll be back. The setlists didn't shake out exactly like I'd hoped (night 3 was straight up boring outside of Honest Man, IMO) but night 1 was the band I fell in love with 12 years ago. After that set I was like...I get why people come here.
