Tunes of the times
December 17, 2004

Esteemed indie record store Luna Music first opened its doors on Dec. 21, 1994. At age 10, the company has stores at 1315 W. 86th St. and 431 Massachusetts Ave.

In honor of the birthday, The Star asked Luna owner/founder Todd Robinson to rhapsodize on his Top 10 sellers of the past decade:

Cat Power, "Moon Pix." "Chan Marshall's inner turmoil and raw pain are channeled with a lucid and spare elegance."

Doves, "The Last Broadcast." "Anthemic song structures, swirling shadows and chugging rhythms combine for a true wall of sound."

Everything But the Girl, "Temperamental." "Peerless vocalist Tracey Thorn and ingenious producer/arranger Ben Watt make timeless pop."

Guided By Voices, "Under the Bushes, Under the Stars." "Like a phantom blast of long-lost AM radio sounds, this is 38 minutes of melodious rock."

Iron and Wine, "Our Endless Numbered Days." "Southern Gothic songwriter Sam Beam engages through thoughtful observations."

Massive Attack, "Protection." "A trip-hop classic that's lyrically crushing, dark, cinematic, enigmatic and oh-so-very sly."

My Morning Jacket, "Acoustic Citsuoca." "An EP full of stunning songs that most groups won't write in a lifetime."

Radiohead, "OK Computer." "The sound of a band trying to grow exponentially and succeeding."

St. Germain, "Tourist." "It would be equally at home as a prime-time set at the Jazz Kitchen or moving bodies at an after-hours party."

Wilco, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." "An impressive departure for a mature band reaching new levels of songwriting, experimentation and production."

Pretty solid list...question...does anyone know what happened to Everthing but the Girl.  They were kind of on top and then seem to have dissapeared. Just curious.
