i saw this dude open for MMJ at lebowski fest in 2004, and ive listened to some of his studio stuff as well.  can anyone tell me what the hell im missing?  i never see a bad thing said about the dude, and i personally cant find one thing about his stuff i like at all.

I love Bobby Bare Jr.  I remember a friend turning me on to him a couple of years ago, and then he opened for MMJ at Exit/In and it was wonderful.  

This record will probably kick serious ass.  Awesome.

Grimey's had a live CD of his the last time that I was there, but I didn't get it and I'm still kicking myself over it. Maybe I can pick it up next Friday when I'm there.

For all you Bobby Bare Jr. fans...

Bobby played a Bonnaroo warmup show in Murfreesboro on 6/6/06 at the Temptation Club with his new band. His new band features Deanaa Varagona (from Lambchop) as well as Matt Rowland and Richie Kirkpatrick from the band Ghostfinger...plus a drummer that I didn't recognize. It was an incredible show. Ghostfinger played a full set after Bobby played. I have some hillarious photos that I may post if I get the time.

If you will be at Bonnaroo make sure to check out Bobby's set  at 8:15pm on Friday at the Troo Music Lounge.

New Bare Jr. release can't be categorized

Bobby Bare Jr. has navigated the boundaries between rock and country as skillfully as any contemporary musician of his generation. Since the mid-'90s, he's crafted with an array of equally gifted players such genre-bending, edgy and sometimes erratic releases as Boo-Tay, Why Do I Need A Job, Brainwasher and From The End Of Your Leash. Bare Jr's Young Criminals Starvation League plays the Basement Saturday night, part of a short Midwest and Southern tour he's doing in anticipation of his new CD The Longest Meow (Bloodshot).

"I'm probably the worse person to ask about a new project," Bare Jr. laughed in response to inquiries about The Longest Meow. "It's kind of like a woman that's gotten all dressed and made up in the dark. No one knows until she gets out there in the light. I'm never really sure about any release until people have a chance to hear it. But I can say that it is in more of a rock direction."

In fact, advance word on The Longest Meow is that it may be his most conceptually adventurous date. The new release was recorded in one marathon 11-hour session at Nashville's Ocean Way studios at the end of May.

Bare Jr. co-wrote much of the material during a 16-day pre-production period with guitarist Carl Broemel, drummer Patrick Hallan from My Morning Jacket, and longtime musical collaborator and friend Mike Grimes. He then co-produced the session along with Brad Jones. The core trio of Jones, Broemel and Hallahan were joined on various numbers by special guests Carey Kotsionis, Corey Younts, Doni Schroader, Jim James (also from My Morning Jacket), plus Lambchop's Deanna Varagona and Clem Snide's Ben Martin.
"It's kind of my big room sound project," Bare Jr. added.

Bare Jr. has also grown greatly as both a player and songwriter. From early numbers like "You Blew Me Off," which mixed slashing Southern rock ingredients with downhome lyrical flavor to more thoughtful and sophisticated narrative pieces like "Visit Me In Music City" or "Beguiled, Bashful, Burnt," Bare Jr.'s music can stimulate thought one movement, incite laughter or dance the next. He's just as effective on heartache ballads, rocking tunes, philosophical numbers or comic retorts, and he's even found time over the years for side projects like his encounters with the ensemble known as the Silver Jews. He also recently did a series of shows with his legendary father Bobby Bare as well as a set at last week's Bonnaroo, which he deems a highlight among recent gigs.

"It was incredible, really a lot of fun," Bare Jr. said. "They really got into what we were doing without any reservations, and the fans there were fantastic."
