Goin To Acapulco is one of me and my wife's favorite Dylan songs ever....and to hear Jim (backed by Calexico, no less!) sing it just makes my heart fucking melt......amazing!

Jeff Tweedy's take of "Simple Twist of Fate" here: http://www.myspace.com/imnottheresoundtrack

Not bad, but it just doesn't seem like the right choice for a cover. That song is just perfect the way Dylan sings it. I'd rather hear Jeff record his excellent version of I Threw It All Away. Oh well...

Jim's song is pretty good, but again not (yet?) great for me. I'd prefer Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You.

Cat Power's is surprisingly the best of the three.

IMO

Maybe, but it really sounds like JJ and Jeff really made these songs their own. They don't sound like covers at all, and I like that. Dylan's songs are for everyone.

Fucking awesome soundtrack!

90s Seattle grunge mixed with 60s Seattle Hendrix and throw in a Zeppelin cover for good measure. Whoever put this together was a fucking genius and deserved man/woman of the year award for 1992.

oh, and Drown is prolly my fav pumpkins song.

Don't know if you were joking or not, but I would assume that the writer /director of singles, Cameron Crowe, put together that soundtrack about a decade before he cast mmj in elizabethtown.

Eddie almost sounds like he's sick.  :-/

Plus, considering that Nels AND Lee Renaldo are on this I'm actually really let down with the guitar on this.  I'll give it another listen.

listening to other people's cover songs make me really feel like a bastard.

i'm not really impressed by any of these so far. granted, i've never heard most of the originals of these, but I haven't really been moved by these. "All Along The Watchtower" felt terribly uninspired, which sucks, because I really love Nels. Something about the way that man records his guitar is perfect for what Wilco does, and terrible for anything that needs some big spacious reverb. I think the hard thing about these covers, is that I get the feeling that Dylan put so much of himself into most of these songs that there's not a whole lot of re-interpretation to do.

I think every now and then a small artist creates something inadvertently beautiful that someone else has to come along and reinterpret to bring out that beauty that the original writers were hinting at, but I feel like this isn't so much of that same case here. not to say this stuff isn't good, just not wholly inspiring. perhaps part of the point was that it was a huge fun project for everyone involved to collaborate the way they did, and that's cool, especially when it shines through in the recording. if you look at it that way, then "Watchtower" was great! These guys had fun shredding around with a classic, and that's respectable, but Jim's cover of "Acapulco" honestly didn't feel very fun. i'm going to listen again, so that i can edit and avoid eating my words if need be. but it just didn't feel like it was really drawn from anywhere fun or deep, and i feel like you need one or the other for a good cover.

please blast me and give input, that's mine.

I agree Tom. Jim's Acapulco sounds a little stretchy/strainy to me. More to do with the song itself than Jim, I think.

I'm pleased to learn that other people feel the same way. I even thought about canceling my pre-order.
Hopefully Mark L & Anthony's tracks will blow me away...
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

I think you all are crazy.  Goin to Acapulco is a GREAT song.  I like Jim's version of it.  It may not be better than the original or unique to it but if you noticed Jim never strays that far from the original version in any cover they do, he just adds his magic to it.  There is no way this soundtrack will not be worth the money and then some.  I can't believe people are so disappointed.  Give it another listen, people, please.

the_wizzard

I'm not disappointed  ;)

But I love Dylan and since I am an old Deadhead I find that interpretations of Dylan's work can sometime trump the original.  Old Bobby D himself has proclaimed that Jerry Garcia did the best arrangements of his songs...and I agree.  So I may not be won over by all the covers...but Cat Power does a mean ass version of Mobile.  Will be listening to this CD alot...

this is going to come in a 2CD or 4LP set.  I'm going to start with the CD.

I can't find this anywhere.  (I've only looked two places)  I guess I'm going to try Walmart today, as much as I hate to do that.  Any ideas?  I don't want to wait for it in the mail.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.
