Idiots, or HUGE idiots?

I say huge idiots.

Come on people, even if it doesn't sound like It Still Moves and before, it's still way better than most crap coming out these days.

TFowl

Well, I wouldn't call them idiots.  Either hipsters who don't really listen to the music as much as read into it and develop their tastes based on others... or people who don't smoke drugs.  Seriously.

NoVa_NoLa

Hmmm, don't know that I'd call them idiots...maybe I'd call them people with different musical tastes than mine.  Maybe "idiots" is appropriate if they denounce the album as "gay" or some other ridiculously juvenile complaint with nothing further to explain their dislike.

Otherwise, different strokes for different folks.  Some will like it, some will not.

FWIW, I didn't like Highly Suspicious the first, second, or third time that I heard it.  Granted, I'm listening to the Austin show (until tomorrow) this song is probably gonna be one of my favorites on the record.

getinthevan

I just think that people who don't like it the first time should listen to again.  And after that, listen to it again.  Once they've got that third time, hit it one more time and if it hasn't started to sink in at that point, keeping listening.

it is like a fine wine, and you must savor it.....
my hips are moving like there is a great energy that engulfed me...I cried at librarian and said wow at Aluminum park,  I have only had the album for two hours,

Feel it, it is there........

This is growing, moving and evolving.... move and go with it.....feel it... it is very fine......

yeah i mean im a little guilty when i read reviews and have a certain expectation.  It happened here with evil urges, but i just got my copy today and after first listen my mind was pretty much blown to bits.  The first three songs just put this huge  grin to my face.  I kept thinking how brillant and out of the box this music was.  And i love highly suspicious, it such a fun song to listen to. I pretty much love every song.  In regards to this record, you just got to suspend your critical part of your brain and just go with it.  Take the ride that mmj has paved out and you will love the experience, i know i did.

QuoteIdiots, or HUGE idiots?

The only HUGE idiots around are those who insist that people must appreciate the new record.

If people don't like it, that's okay.  Not everyone has to have the same taste as everyone else in the world.

I'm glad people are digging this album, figured as much since this is the mmj forum but still I haven't seen as much hate here as other boards.  It's also nice to see people digging highly suspicious its one of my favorite songs on the record.

I can't wait to hear the breakdown on Evil Urges live this Friday, its going to be face melting!

What was nice about this record for me was I came at it with only expectations of it being on par with Z, which was my first exposure to the jacket, I absolutely love At Dawn, ISM and TF, but I don't expect them to revisit that, they are constantly moving forward with each record.  To my pleasant surprise we recieved an amazing album with a wide variety of songs and a bunch of experimentation.  I may like this record more than Z or it may just be a new album crush, only time will tell, one thing is for sure though, these guys never disappoint.

Penny Lane

yeah i have to admit, this is my least favorite MMJ record but i think it's still a mile above anything else coming out ---i also think it's a good sign people have set the bar so high for them and recognized their unending potential. that said, i'm a huge fan, i'm headed to bonnaroo to see the best live show around these days and will enjoy hearing the new stuff live-- you can't hate that people that don't like this album---all great bands have been criticized and knocked down..usually it's the 3rd album! at least they got to 4 ;-)
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

i love MMJ and I don't use drugs. What's wrong with me?

courtlandfoster

Well, it's not as good as IT STILL MOVES or AT DAWN...but it's still not bad.

Watch...they will go back to their roots on the next record. Trust me.

I'm sorry, but I still love EVIL URGES.

Did I ever say people who don't enjoy them all don't smoke?  I'm saying chances are if they don't like this album but liked their other albums... They probably don't get high.  It was a goof, grow up. :P

I would preach the virtue of patience.

I took a few listens to get it.

Man, It's good, though.

Funy how my 2 favorite albums this year are MMJ & Radiohead.
O, How time flies, with crystal clear eyes.  But it's cold, it's cold, when you're ending with diamond eyes.

Sorry if some of us don't mark out on everything the boys do but we all have different tastes and expectations and the new album has some good songs on it but it is not their best studio effort,in fact it's prolly their worst. If that makes me an idiot then so be it. I certainly have been called worse.

this cd is really really good though i have to admit it took a few listens to grow on me.

Evil Urges is going to be a slow building monster of badassness. I have gone through it 2x, and have the same reaction I had to Z- what the fuck is this? this is not ISM or at dawn. Z only had pedal steel in 2 songs. but i have seen half the songs live, and they all sounded awesome. EE has pedal steel in 4 songs, and funk beats in 4 more. basically, this album goes in a new direction with traces of vintage MMJ. I think it is really good, and i havent heard it enough yet. I have to go track by track-

EE- awesome. great beat, solid effot
TMIGTS 1- one of the best. so different, but it is done well. sounded like 311 at the beginning
Highly suspiscous- this is awesome live. not a good studio song
im amazed- right off ISM, great song. vintage
Thank you too- gorgeous, MMJ can do emotion so well.
Sec Walkin- my kind of country. pedel steel at its best. good live
Two halves- sounds to MTVish. do not like this one yet
Librarian- growing on me, a little bland
Look at You- another MMJ ballad masterpiece, with precise pedal steel
Aluminum Park- anytime 2008. awesome rock song
Remnants- can see a little pearl jam here.
Smokin- one of MMJ's best. one of the best endings i have ever heard
TMIGTS 2- nice departure from MMJ norm. good stuff, but pat's drums sound like a machine, very produced.
