.....when I was in the shower today I was thinking that I hope they never have a greatest hits just because they are kind of lame, bands make albums for a reason, just buy the record and listen to it and make your own greatest hits if you want.....

Yup, in the mp3 age greatest hits is kind of an outdated concept.

Greatest Hits albums are only for long lasting sub standard bands.

Like Aerosmith.  (ooooh I might catch hell for that one)

Bands like MMJ and Radiohead DO NOT need to have greatest hits albums.

DaFunkyPrecedent

....but just like Radiohead, My Morning Jacket will have a greatest hits.  Hopefully it's also a 2 Disc, and hopefully it comes out AFTER their next album.

God damn those shaky knees.

My favorite is Brooks & Dunn's Greatest hits that begins in the early 90's and goes through '99 on the first disc, and then the entirely separately sold part 2 (meaning, please shell out another $16 for it) spans 2000 til now. They're still active. Why do you need a greatest hits when they're still active?

I thought that the Guess Who's greatest hits was great. And it's great for artists who aren't active anymore and who have such a damn huge catalog that it helps to have a good place to start. And sometimes there's bands that you don't need a greatest hits album, because they put a lot of work into crafting the albums these songs are pulled from. I thought that the Pink Floyd Echoes project was a really masterfully crafted greatest hits project , because they actually worked hard on making it listen like an album, which is hard to do with a Hits record. I liked the fact that some of the songs on there weren't necessarily hits, like "When the Tigers Broke Free"--but that they all added something to it. Good call, guys.

As for MMJ, they don't need one. All these songs belong so well in the corners of their albums that it would feel out of place to feature TWTHS without having it precluded by At Dawn and Lowdown and without it fading in to Death is the Easy Way. I wouldn't Anytime not leading in to Lay Low, or Off The Record without its bookend in WAWM and Into the Woods. Everything has been so thoughtfully placed that I'd hate to take it out of context on purpose.

Plus, I feel like I'm making a custom-tailored Greatest Hits every time I make a mix of their material for somebody I'd like to introduce them to. The problem with the Greatest Hits is that it is really a major-label marketing tol to make themselves more money. They don't tend to benefit the artists that much and make for a good pay out for the label. So make a mix, give it to your friends, and enjoy a custom-tailored Greatest Hits!

P.S. I highly doubt they'd consider including "If It Smashes Down" or "Butch Cassidy" in there, which would highly disappoint me...
The river is moving. The blackbird must be flying.

mmj did release a best of collection already. it's called okonokos.

--- and that's 2 real 4 u.

The DARK

The problem with an MMJ greatest hits is the production. If they were to make a greatest hits for the band now, the earlier, stripped-down singles that would be included (Lowdown, Just Beacause I Do, Heartbreakin Man) would sound totally out of place next to the more recent Evil Urges and Z material. It would absolutely have to be in chronological order or else it would completely fail to capture the MMJ sound/
