I tried a search.  I'm curious to know what his influences are/were.

pretty sure digital underground's sex packets were quite influential.  "sex packets a dollar for 2, just tell me how many for you."  oh, we need the packet man.  sex in a  ;)packet, how awesome!

They like rock and roll.  There's an interview from wfpk in 2000 where Jim cites some band names, he mentions The Band, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Django Reinhardt, Elton John, etc.

I've read tons on his influences and here are a few...(although by no means complete)

He's said in the past that he always goes back to the Zepplin - who doesn't?

He started playing guitar with licks of Dr. Feelgood album by Motley Crue.

He mentioned loving the Flamming Lips at one point.

He's mentioned John Prine and Bob Dylan.

The Band has been metioned more than once.

He's mentioned several times how much he likes Outkast.

Obviously, he's into Graham Parsons - did the tribute concert and played his songs.

And you can look at all the stuff he's covered: Harry Nielsen, Elton John, Eagles, freeking Erica Badu (classic), Bread, yada yada.... a shit load

and dont ya forget Nirvana. I remember that record store album-buying interview where he was saying he was really into the whoel hair metal deal and then Nirvana came along and it blew him away that a dude just playing a few chords could get accross so much more than any of the hair bands out there. I think that made a big influence on him.

I don't know about all of y'all but i hear a lot of Galaxie 500 in their sound. That's what I really love aobut My Morning Jacket. They seem to take this southern american sensibility and fuse it with Yankee indie music haha..

Finally got round to reading the December issue of Mojo.
They have a section called Last Night A Record Changed My Life...this month Jim talks about his love for Parliament's "First Thangs"
I won't type the whole article but I'll give you this: " I just can't handle how awesomely they did all those styles, and that they even did it at all. I don't know if it's the drugs or because they just didn't care, but I think more people should just not give a fuck like that."
