this show at mr. smalls totally killed.

first, the venue (a former church) was appropos for jim's voice.  ethereal.  majestic.  reverb layer on top of reverb layer.  not muddy at all, very clear, crisp sounding.  nice sized, not too big or small, just right.  only caveat...no alcohol.  someone shouted out "your music screams for alcohol!" and we all laughed.
(liquor license pending)

setlist was amazing.  great sounding.  good mixing.

drove 1000 miles (to and from), saw lots of family and friends...all in all, it was a great time.  so bloody tired today, but alas...all in the name of the jacket!  amen!

spoke with the lone taper there-this show will be on etree for download, and i will be puttin' er up on the FTP server.

big shout out thanks to the guys...tom, canadian metal is still bad, don't listen to me fantasize about the old days!

JC:
Being from Louisville, now living in the Pitts, I wasn't about to miss this show.  I saw Jim and Conor Oberst play here a few months ago, and MMJ at the Rosebud last fall.  But Mr. Small's was the best venue so far.  They're really getting some good radio time these days here as well on WYEP (the Pittsburgh equivalent to WFPK), unlike last summer, when I called in a request and the DJ had never even heard of them.  Slowly but surely, people are finally catching on: these guys are for real and they're here to stay (or rather, keep coming back until you can no longer ignore the fact that you've got to check them out!).  Anyways, back to the point...I also talked with the guy taping the show who also directed me to etree, but it's still not up (though I am getting the Columbus show as we speak).  Please let me know if/when you get the Pittsburgh show.  I'll try checking the FTP again in a few days.  Thanks!

Just reviewed the Columbus show...except for maybe 1 or 2 songs, it's the same setlist as the Pittsburgh show the day before.  But Jim's dedication of a song to Karl Malone and Joe Pesci was classic.  Come to think of it, when he was here with Conor Oberst, he dedicated a song to Karl Malone then as well, saying that he tries to play music as graceful as Karl Malone when he plays basketball.  What's this connection of Karl Malone to Pittsburgh all about?  Does he do the same in other cities?  Hmmm...another topic all together...

yo john,
i'll check etree to see if its there and put er on the FTP server!

hey all,
this is you're "lone taper" from pittsburgh.  just wanted to let you guys know that i should have the show up within the next week or so.  i had a level problem at the beginning of the show.  a friend of mine with some fancy-schmansy audio stuff is working on the problem and i should have the re-mastered version of the show back to me within the next few  days.  in the meantime, if someone could post a setlist, i'd really appreciate it.  thanks.
jef

BTW, this one is worth the wait.  trust me.  i've taped in mr. small's dozens of times and, the stage-lip of charlie hunter i did a few weeks ago notwithstanding, my MMJ recording is one of my best yet there.

this never gets old...

oh...the mr.smalls show...probably the best tone and quality i've heard from any band in a long time...maybe ever.  johnbky...what, its been like two and 1/2 years since you gave me a cdr entitled "my morning jacket demo" with some really rootsy recordings of at dawn tunes.  moved from louisville to pittsburgh...bam...seen them here four times...shared the stage with them once.  by far...the best performance i've seen from them...maybe from any band...and yes...that includes the all the PJ shows...good to see your review...hope the trip home went well...

Truly awesome.  I think I'm still floating from that show...

i'm getting ready to seed my recording of this show.  can anyone help me with the setlist?

johnbky

I've downloaded the Columbus show from the night after the Pittsburgh show and I'm pretty sure it's the exact same set.  So I just went through those songs and here's what I came up with:

At Dawn
Golden
Just One Thing
It Beats For U
Lowdown
The Way That He Sings
How Do You Know
Death is the Easy Way
One Big Holiday
I Will Sing You Songs
Dancefloors
Mahgeetah
Steam Engine
Run Thru
One in the Same

Hope this helps!
