transcendant, as always.

and was that a prince cover i heard?  i do indeed think so.

some thoughts on the new songs:
'off the record' -- i love jim's delivery of this one.  the chorus has more of a poppy feel to it than the earlier jacket stuff.  and the electronic beats/breakdown performed by pat are sweet stuff.
'don dante' -- very dark song.  starts slow, with jim singing deep and low, then eventually (3-4 minutes in) it breaks down into a loud as hell rock-fest.

as mentioned above, there was a song played that i am almost positive was a prince cover.  there was also a song that sounded like a cover called 'what a wonderful man,' but it could be an original.  if so, it's one catchy little pop number (compared to the rest of mmj's back catalogue).  anybody have any idea on these two songs?

the maestro conducted the band for the entire show including encore.  he was decked out in full conductor suit and jim mentioned at the beginning, "believe it or not, every single movement and note being made up here is being choreographed right now."  yet another crazy thing for the band to do to shake things up at a live show.

some final random notes/thoughts:
it was strange to actually see jim's face for the entire show.  i think the last time that occurred for me was sometime in 99 or 00 at a show in louisville.

patrick hallahan fukin rocks.  period.

the new lineup is about 20 times more cohesive since i saw them last year.  they mesh so well now.  i cannot wait to hear the new LP.

i saw one taper, so hopefully the show will get out there relatively soon.

long live the jacket!  cheers all.

"what a wonderful man" is an original.
and yes, it does rock.

Thanks for the review! Poppy Electronics huh? I wanna hear it!

Man of few words

Incredible show.

It was my first MMJ show and will certanly not be my last.

Anybody got a setlist?

fadingcaptain

This was my first MMJ show, I just discovered them about a month ago.  Needless to say, I was completely blown away.  I was a huge GBV fan and needed someone to latch onto after their demise, and the Jacket has completely filled that void and then some.

Brilliant show, that's all there is to say.  I can't wait to see them again.  BTW, what did y'all think of the opening bands?  I thought Doug Gillard's band was good, I loved the "I am a Tree" close, but I though Parker and Lily were terrible.

Back in Nashville after Birmingham and Athens. A great time was had by all. Highlights:

BIRMINGHAM
-The stage at Sloss with the big furnace behind it
-The guy (sweatboard?)who lip synchned the Cheap Trick on stage. AWESOME!
-Peeps
-ALL THE SONGS (even with the feedback and the light guy with a hearing problem). Hearing Twilight live. This Magic Moment and the omnichord.
-Watching my wife's best friend at her first MMJ show (she's a punk rocker). She fell in love with the Slayer roadie and was leaping during Run Through and OBH.
-Jim's ode to iron ore
-the parking lot attendant who hooked me up with ibuprofen

ATHENS
-my first show at 40 Watt
-talking to Jim before the show
-watching Parker Noon give the best "eat shit and die and listen to my songs" grin at the idiots booing him...haunting. Say what you want about Parker and Lilly, and it may not translate well live in a loud bar, but Parker is not a poser, he's the real deal. We talked to him after the show and he's a really nice guy too.
-Watching the rude, beautful blonde up front, (pushing her way through folks, being too drunk to smoke) not being able to make it to the start of MMJ, had to be helped out by some friend.
-ALL THE SONGS, but 'specially Run Thru and OBH. Perhaps the tightest and explosivest (explosivist?) I have heard the 6x I have seen them. Adding Lowdown to the set. The Prince cover (even though my wife had to tell me and everyone around me it was a Prince cover). getting to hear the new songs AGAIN. Can't wait to hear the album.
-Having the maestro go for it the whole show, not letting up 1 bit; sending the crowd into a frenzy before the encore.
-The crowd at the 40 Watt. Totally involved and rocking, like a rock show should be.

Thnks for a great road trip and to all the kind, nice folks we met and talked to at the shows. What a class bunch of folks that love MMJ!

See you in Louisville!

I'd like to give it up for the crowd at Athens.  WOW!! :o  We were on fire, it was like 140 degrees in there, packed house and everyone was getting down.  I just kept looking around at everybody so in love with the sound, it made me smile and tear up.  I also want to send out some love to some amazing people I met for the first time, LA and Tracy, Corey and Jamie, Megan and Jen, Joe and Brian, Darell.  You All Fucking Rock!!!!

I just found this torrent. It's a 24bit one, so you can't listen to it on a regular CD as far as I know. I should probably know about that by now, but it's still unclear to me.

Also, the setlist for the torrent says that the Prince cover was "I could never take the place of your man", which is probably my favorite Prince song.

There will be a 16 bit source seeded in a couple of days by the same taper, so if you don't know about 24 bit, you may want to wait.
Also, I know there was at least one more source for the show.

can someone tell me what that song was that was playing right before the jacket went on stage in athens?  maybe it's just me, but you could just feel the electricity skyrocket and then they come on stage.  sounded like bowie.  fucking great show.

sweatboard

My new friend Brian was lovin that song and said it was his favorite Bowie song.
