My take on the owls and panda bears is that they are using Japanese imagery to get away from all the southern rock / jam band labels.  Also danny cash did the graphic design work for Z and he is into that Japenese stuff too (see Kopilot on Links for more on that)

I think the owls are relative to the cover for Z.
