Top 5 things I hope MMJ pick up from Pearl Jam

1.  The art and beauty of playing 2.5 - 3 hour shows.  Pearl Jam have just about every song from every album, plus b-sides and other rare songs in rotation.  They usuallly play at least two encores.  I would love for MMJ to still have songs like "War Begun", "Cobra", "Honest Man", etc. etc. in the rotation and to be playing about twice as long as they currently do.  It's always fun trying to guess what song Pearl Jam is going to open and close with and what rare songs they may play.  It would be awesome if MMJ mixed up the set list like this a little more.

2. Official Bootlegs - The way PJ does it, it's really not expensive for the band to produce and it's a great treat for the fans.  Pearl Jam releases the audio from the shows over thier web-site, this way they don't have to pay for packeging and actuall CD's.  Shows are available for download hours after they perform.  It's really great to be able to have an awesome sounding recording of the show you just went to.

3.  Pre Sets - Eddie comes out and does a couple songs solo before the opening act.  It's a good way to get people out to watch the opening band and it's a great treat for the fans.  I'd love to see Jim start doing stuff Like "I Will Be There When You Die", "By My Car" and acoustic Cover Songs in pre-sets.

4.  Tagging other songs on to thier own.  Pearl Jam often extends songs and starts jamming out other peoples song in the middle or at the end of thier own songs.  My favorite is when they tag "another brick in the wall" onto daughter.  It's another way to add a little extra excitement to the show.  It's fun to find out what song they are going to tag on that particular night.

5. Ticket Prices - This may sound crazy to many of you because you just saw the average price of $120 dollars for two tickets to a PJ show and you're used to paying $15-$30 dollars for Club shows.  Honestly though this is about as low as they can get it.  You won't find any lower tickets for a show in an arena.  Mostly because ticketmaster wants to rape you up the butt.  Many people made fun of Pearl Jam for takeing on Ticketmaster and I'm not real sure why, Do they like paying out the ass for concert tickets?  Anyway, if MMJ does get to the point where they start playing larger venues I hope they follow Pearl Jam's lead in keeping ticket prices as resonable as possible.

i agree with everything you just said. as far as "honest man" goes, i would shit my pants to hear it live. i have it on SHN file but i have no clue yet how to convert it to WAV format. ill figure it out though.

id love to hear some of the rarities of MMJ for sure!!! when PJ opened with "wash" in ottawa, i took out my extra pair of underwear and put them on immediately.

AND A PRESET WITH JUST JIM!!!!!! id have to bring yet more undergarments to the concert. and id never wash them, id frame them with the title " the massive shit i took when jim took to the stage for a preset"

guys, i'm seriously starting to freak out a little
but i done went and plum forgot it

your ideas are really interesting, but...

1. no knock on pearl jam at all, but MMJ play so balls to the wall that i think it's impossible to sustain that kind of insanity for 3 hours on a tour unless the boys start working out pronto.
2. 3. and 4., i would be very receptive to. i would just hate for the smattering of fools that come see bands to chatter during a solo acoustic jam. that would be lame.
5. i don't think i'd wanna see the jacket play an arena. i think their sound wouldn't be as jacket-y... but i don't know... but yeah, 60$ a piece for an arena is "reasonable" in this day. isn't that crazy? it's like a week's worth of groceries... a day and half of min-wage work...

love the official bootleg idea. i would pay for a quality recording, especially if i went to the show. it's the best souvenir...
everything sucks. really.

That's right wellfleet. They shouldn't (imHo ;) ) play longer shows. the tension and the power they develop can only be sustained for so long. Hell, they have enough cracking songs to fill an epic 3 hour show, but i think they'd need an automatic pilot to do that night after night.
and i don't want them to to that ;D

about the pre-sets: MMJ should try what Neil Young did on his 76 tour with Crazy Horse: first a couple of solo accoustic songs; little break, and then full power forward! (just dreamin out loud ;) )

arenas: last time I saw them they played for about 250 people. It's a hell of a jump from there to arenas (maybe if they'd tour europe more ;D)

official bootlegs: bring 'em on

I think Jim's voice lends itself to a bigger venue, it can fill up the Grand Canyon.

I was thinking the same thing.   And the only thing better than reverb?:  More reverb.

Don't get me wrong, I dread MMJ playing Arenas or Ampitheters but, if it happens I hope the keep ticket prices as reasonable as possible.  I have no desire to see MMJ anywhere bigger than a club.  I'm not even crazy about them playing theaters.  I thought Bonnaroo last year was the worst show of thiers I've seen (I would have liked to have been there in '04 though), it's just not intimate and that's one of the things I love most about seeing them live.  I have to disagree %100 percent about seeing them play longer shows though.  They have plenty of mellow songs to get through a really long show without sacrificing the energy.  Pearl Jam plays 70-80 show tours and plays almost 3hrs per night with AMAZING energy and those guys are getting kind of older.  I would be willing to sacrifice a "little" power to hear them start playing Master Plan, I Needed It Most, Rollin Back, They Ran, War Begun, If All Else Fails, Evelyen, By My Car, Tonight I Wanna Celebrate With You,  Weeks Go By Like Days, etc.

you think they'd be sacrficing power to play Masterplan? Holy crap, that song frickin moves me.
The river is moving. The blackbird must be flying.

I'm just saying if they had to tone down the intensity just a hair in order to start playing longer shows with more varied set lists, I could deal with that.  I actually think the band only has one gear though.......FULL THROTLE!!!!!  But like I said they have enough slow mellow type songs to pace themselves to be able to put on an awesome 2.5 hour show without losing the intesity in songs like Run Thru and One Big Holliday.  I think Masterplan is a severly underated song.  I really think it should be appearing regularly in the set lists.

I would like Eddie & the boys to tell Jim & the boys all about how great their last Japan tour was in '93, that the Japanese fans are great, that there's lots of money to be made etc & that they should really tour there soon  ;)
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Why'd I put a wink?!! I'm not kidding damn it!

love a song for the way it makes you feel

PJ was in Japan in 2003.  They only played about 7 shows but they were there.  I've got the Bootlegs to prove it.

I have all the Japan bootlegs too + all the Oz ones from around the same time.
Nagoya, Japan. Forget the exact date, I was there!

I think that's my favorite show from Japan.  Didn't they open with Given To Fly?

I think that cover is from the Toyko show, I was at Nagoya.
I forget what they opened with & all my bootlegs are at my wife's parents house.
I do remember them closing with RiTFW & Eddie busting a couple of tambourines.
I also remember we all got cross with Eddie because he was having everything he said translated into Japanese. When he spoke he spoke off mike to the translater so we couldn't hear. You can hear people at shouting him to speak in English on the bootleg  ;D
Amazing show!!!
