My Morning Jacket - Rubber Gloves - Denton, Texas
                                  March 15, 2002

I was just thinking about this earlier and I figured I'd share my rememberances here.   They had played SXSW
earlier in the week.   I was originally going to go to Austin for that, but once I found out that MMJ was touring the Southeast I opted for that instead.
They played Denton on this Friday night.   I remember arriving early because I didn't want to get shut out - they were building up their fanhood base and they didn't sell tickets in advance.
I don't have the setlist in front of me.  But I do remember that this was the show where Jim debuted his "robe" of sorts that he probably bought in Austin.   It was kinda psychedelic, not sure what it's actually called.    They opened the show (I believe) with One Big Holiday.   They played 12 songs, just over an hour.  The highlights for me were The Bear and Phone Went West but it was all good.
Jim closed it down with a beautiful version of Bermuda Highway.   This was the first time that I had heard Heartbreakin Man live.
At one point Jim started throwing bread into the audience, and you can hear a guy on the tape say "Give me some bread now!"   Another found audience memory is just
a fanatic being totally overwhelmed after a song and he simply shouts out "JACKET!"
I probably have it somewhere at home, and I am sure that it's been treed here before.  It's hard to believe that's four years ago.   More 'back in the day' stuff:  three nights later in New Orleans I saw them in a tiny bar and they played to exactly two fans and about 10 other people!   They have come a long way, needless to say.   Long live MMJ, and
God bless my son and the others.

That IS a killer robe.  I've never seen it before, but maybe that's what got MMJ the 'best-dressed' award.

This show was the first MMJ bootleg I owned!

I ended up finding this show tonight and I'm digging it now.
Jim wore the robe for the first time (I guess, it was the first time I'd seen it...he probably had it on in Austin a few days before?).    We originally treed this show over on the yahoogroups board (pre-forum days).   A dude named Bruce created some artwork for it using Cheryl "Cat" Null's
Great photos from the Feb 5, 2002 in Dallas.    For the record, he wore the robe in Tampa (where Riny's picture is from, I think and the following Saturday, 3/23/02 in Columbia,
SC)
Early in the show (actually, right before they played The Dark, Jim calls out for more reverb.   And a few in the crowd holler out "reverb!" and he seconds that with "Yes for Reverb!"    Oh yeh, here's the setlist:

One Big Holiday
Just Because I Do
Picture of You
The Dark
Lowdown
The Bear
War Begun
Hearbreakin Man
The Way the He Sings
Phone Went West
Tyrone (Jim solo)
Bermuda Highway (Jim solo)

It was between Lowdown and The Bear when he decides to clue the crowd into his other personality.   Johnny told me later that week about it.   Jim had concocted 'super
hero' nicknames and had given them all a name:  Jim was
Constricto and he hollers out "I Am Constricto!" here.
He says "We're My Morning Jacket all the way from Louisville, Kentucky - cause...I'm your host Constricto..."
and then he does the maniacal laughter bit and throws the bread into the crowd (classic comedic bit in my book)..
"he is Black Box , he is Window...he is Torso....and he is
Disappearo!" - the others were just looking over at him and laughing along as well.   It was was classic case of Ridiculosity and then they go into The Bear....Awesome!
Anyway, it was one for the ages even though it was relatively short show.  I had told them pre-show (Jim, anyway) and the others later that they were about to have a pest on their hands; that I was about to follow them to six shows starting on March 18 through the 24th.  I later dubbed this the "Pest Went East" show.   I told them that if I started to get on the nerves to just tell me to 'fuck off' and Danny said something like 'no, just tell us to 'fuck off' when we get on yours" - geniunely nice guys, I appreciated it then and now.   Chris "KC" Geutig was on drums.   I ended up seeing them in New Orleans, Gainesville, Tampa, Atlanta, Columbia,  and Greensboro over the next week.   I'd never even met Johnny, Chris or Danny 'til this show (Denton).
As I like to say "no punches thrown, no restraining order issued" - long live MMJ, thanks for the memories kids.   If anyone wants this I can send it to either Sweatboard or Kory or someone to put it up somewhere.   (Damn, War Begun just came on ....masterpiece of the live variety!).

I'm relatively certain that he also played it at the 10/25/01 (a date which shall live in infamy) show.   And also at the 3/21/02 Atlanta show.   I will be digging out these shows this week (if I can find them...ugh...my current situation is that I am an unorganized wreck, recently moved)
and offering them up to Sweatboard or Kory.   Most of them sound sub-par.   Some are okay, Tampa and Atlanta probably sound the best.   In Atlanta Jim got on a roll and sang (I think) five songs at the end of the MMJ set.  I think he did At Dawn (and sang the first verse of John Prine's Spanish Pipedream to kick it off), two others, and closed with Death is the Easy Way and The Bear (probably did Bermuda Highway here, can't remembrer for sure.   I will look for 'em.
