7:15 p.m.: Louisville's My Morning Jacket dabbles in reggae ("Off the Record") and art rock ("Wordless Chorus") before returning to the barnburning, Southern-fried guitar workout of "One Big Holiday." Onstage, singer Jim James tells of attending Lollapalooza '94 in Cincinnati. "That day I dreamt about playing Lollapalooza," says the lion-maned singer. "And 12 years later it happened."

7:40 p.m.: Sleater-Kinney takes the stage for the last time in Chicago. Next week, the trio will play their final shows in their hometown of Portland. The set kicks off with "The Fox" and Corin Tucker wailing "Land, ho!" The hands of Janet Weiss are a blur as they race across her drum kit. Guitarist Carrie Brownstein is pogoing and karate-kicking. This is going to be one heck of a farewell.

7:40 p.m.: Backstage, Jim James is still on a natural high. "It was beautiful up there, man," he says. "It's a different experience from playing the Metro or the Vic, seeing this park and this skyline."

My Morning Jacket were the first band I stayed and watched for more than 4 or 5 songs. Hey, the go-go-go pace of these things encourages a short attention span. But I'm glad I slowed down for their set because it was really just what I needed right then. Even though they opened with "At Dawn", thing started a little bit slow but quickly revved up to awesome as they went on. Jim James shared his own memories of going to Lollapalooza as a teen, making me realize that a) this was now a generational event, and b) I'm old.

What was going on with wordless chorus? MMJ using recorded backing tracks? Not cool

But the set of the day belonged to Jim James and My Morning Jacket, the Best Live Band in America (yeah, we said it). Jim poured every ounce of his reverbed vocals into the epic performance, and regaled us with a tale of his Lolla past. "Being a young youth at my first Lollapalooza, I saw amazing bands like The Verve, Flaming Lips, Smashing Pumpkins. A Tribe Called Quest was there too," he said. "And I just dreamed of being able to play this festival one day. Twelve years later, here we are, and we just want to say ... thank you so very much." Which was a great story because it was incredibly sincere and because it was incredibly awesome to hear Jim James say "A Tribe Called Quest."

Tribe Called Quest - Is really really good.  I remember recently hearing that Jim was digging on "summertime" by dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince and thinking........man that's why I absoulutly adore this guy, he just tells it like it is.  Jim is not interested in impressing anyone, he just loves music.  I can really appreciate whrere he was coming form with the "summertime" comment because I myself remember the feeling that song has given me on occasion and even though I think my musical tastes have evolved it's great to be able to look back at something like that and still appreciate it and not totally disregard it out of snobbery.  Tribe Called Quest on the other hand is a band that I really really loved and now when I go back and listen to them I realize even more how fucking good they really are.
There's Still Time.........

Damn straight, Midnight Marauders & Low End Theory are must have hip-hop classics.
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

We've been through this on the boards, bro. They only do when it's something where the sound would only work if it's Jim's voice (i.e., the chorus "ahs" on Anytime)
Doesn't bother me a bit, esp. because Carl does sing.

My Morning Jacket
Atmospheric and moody on record, My Morning Jacket act like a band possessed onstage. Even mellower songs like "Wordless Chorus" were energized by long-haired lead singer Jim James's plaintive wail. James explained the Kentucky band's enthusiasm by telling the audience of his dreams of playing Lollapalooza when he attended an earlier incarnation in 1994. Perhaps the September release of their live album "Okonokos" will finally deliver on the group's live sound.

You won't find anything from Jim DeRogatis in the Sun Times. That guy has got it in for MMJ, hasn't written a word about them, unless it's simple buzz terms. He kinda sucks anyway, but come on dude...

Funny you say that Danko. Because it was Monday and I was feelin' fiesty this morning....I wrote to Mr. Derogatis about this very topic. This is the jist of what I said.

Dear Mr. Derogatis,
I would expect a seasoned music-reviewer and writer such as you to come up with more appropriate words to describe Louisville natives, My Morning Jacket than a "modern day Skynyrd." First you give them a pass in favor of seeing the Raconteurs at Lollapalooza, which is understandable as these guys are very talented. But for the thousands of viewers reading your words on the other bands, how many of them will now pass on checking out My Morning Jacket because  you have pigeon-holed them into a ludicrous comparison to an out-dated and overly feted band of the 70's? (You cannot count what they are doing now as even close to the original band output.) If you've listened to MMJ at all, you will hear influences from Neil Young, to Erykah Badu, to Gram Parsons, to Flaming Lips to the Who...and that's all in one night!

What you might wish to do is listen to them and then tell us again if you'd use that descriptor. Better yet, catch them live and see if you can even describe the bombastic presence that is My Morning Jacket! I think you will NOT find a better live act touring right now.

;D I doubt it will get published but I felt better after writing it...
But seein you feels good, and its always understood.
That anything much sweeter would make me die.

Very nice...I'm sure we're not alone so maybe he'll get the message. Thing is, he plays favorites like many critics. He made up his mind a long time ago that he wasn't gonna pay attention to these guys...but they haven't gone away, quite the contrary. It's most odd that he doesn't even trash them, just ignores them, like he's afraid to help them out. Fuck 'im...

My Morning Jacket: Ideally, every live performance by this band would begin at dusk — their sound is so big that it could follow the sun into the west. Starting directly after Iron & Wine (Jim James and Sam Beam should have a hirsute-off), the set, with reverb-heavy vocals from lead singer James, was amazing — sometimes rocking, sometimes jammy, sometimes country-ish. Plus, MMJ were one of the only bands to overcome the second main stage's underwhelming sound system, which sunk both Ryan Adams and the Shins.
