noob here, so...

...does the band change up the setlist everynight?  was looking at setlists, but looks like most of the last year was opening for PJ, so probably not much variation.

if they're headlining a two night run, can I expect different setlists each night?

deciding between one show or two...

thanks for the help!

BH

I would expect about 50% different each night, especially if it's the same city.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

SpacedCowboy

Go multiple nights.  Ive gotten in the habit, and I wouldnt have it any other way.  Its definately worth it.  The set varies and they always slip in that one rare song you really wanna hear.
and the pump don't work cause the vandal took the handle

PapaJoeBear

You guys are crazy.  If you go multiple nights, your gonna get 75-85% same show.  Look at the setlists the past few years! They do not mix it up that much at all, unfourtunitly.

PapaJoeBear

Not that there is anything wrong with the setlists being so simular mind you.  But when I first got into them, i was soooo hoping that setlists would change alot form city to city, but it never did.  I think they  pick a large core of songs they play every night of the tour and switch around 3 or 4 songs each night.

so these 2 are not exactly the same, but remeber this 2nd show was Lebowski Fest, so of course they would play a cover for the fest, hence the Man In Me. Take out that and you have only 1 song that wasn't played both nights, that being O the One that is Real.

Now with more recent shows, you would hear a diff. order of songs, but the setlist didn't change too much.  Hey would play almost all of Z , minus Knott Comes Loose (why no love for Knott Comes Loose? Such an amazing song...) then through in some 'classics', whixh would change a bit from night to night.  One night they play The Way That He Sing, next night Sooner.  One night they Play I Think I'm going to Hell, next night One Big Holiday.

So what does this tell us?  I'm a critical A$$? Maybe so.  But to say they switch up the setlist alot each night is just not true.  They ar egetting better at it than they were when I 1st started listening to them, but they still don't mix it up a whole lot.  Hopefully Tommy is telling the truth, ands we'll see more older songs this tour. which will make me happy, as I'm growing a bit tired out some of the songs off of Z and would like to see setlists a little less dominated with Z songs. The 1st sohw of this tour looks real promising; lets watch the setlists and see if they mix it up alot.

Have fun out there folks! ;D

chris081072

Thanks for all the info!  I think I'll just be seeing the second night in Denver  :o

realdeal

Two nights in fucking Denver and only one night in crappy Louisville Gardens?!?!

They must have family in Denver.

BH

Well I went back 2 months and you went back 2 years.  Anyway I get your point, but I would be willing to bet on closer to 50% for this upcoming tour.  I guess we will find out tommorow!  Of course when you play 2 hour and 15 minutes it's hard not to repeat the same stuff!

One thing we can both agree on, is that they should play Knot Comes Loose more often! (And into the woods for that matter IMO)
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Angry Ewok

Like I said somewhere else, I'm also betting an even half... 50%.
--- and that's 2 real 4 u.

Anu

If you love a band enough, and have the time and money to spare, you'd watch them eat the same burrito twice.

Setlist variation is the best, but even the same show is not the same show two nights in a row. And what beats leaving daily life to follow a band for a few days?

PapaJoeBear

I agree for the most part Anu! I saw them last year in Seattle then travelled down to Portland the next night. Great shows, both of them. I even got a I thinkI'm going to Hell in Portland that I did not get in Seattle. Plus M. Ward came out for encore in Portland, even though encore was only mediocre.
There is no doubt The Jacket put on the best live show going right now; I'd see Portland and Seattle in January back to back even if I knew it would be a duplicate setlist. I can't make both this year because they are during the work week.  But I will be happy with the Seattle show.  50% mixed setlist is great for this tour, no doubt.  But I believe the O.P. wanted to know if they really mix up the setlist or not.  It has been my expeirence, being into a few bands that never play the same show twice, that if you are looking for big setlist variations, to look elsewhere.  Not that I mind this at all! I just love live Jacket. :) Hope to see some of you in Seattle this winter!

Papa Joe,

I think you are missing the point in the first post. The question was a little vague. (Or maybe I missed it?)

But I think the person is trying to ask specifically about two back-to-back show is the SAME CITY. Dallas and Washington D.C. are gettting two shows in the fall tour. San Francisco and Denver are getting multiple shows on the December leg of the tour.

If your frame of reference are 2 nights in different cities especially during the first half of the fall '05 tour, then you are right. That was a complaint of many fans. They were hardly altering their set list at all. But then they hit the Fillmore to record what would become the double LP Okonokos. After that their set list began to vary from city to city.

But that's not the poster's point, and if you go back to look at back-to-backs in the same city, I think you will find that it is near 50-40% difference in the shows. (please don't cite the boston pops performance as a counter example for obvious reasons)

Ok, well you picked two setlists from a 'jam band' festival.  I think the kids there would of left if they started playingthe same set again. But fairenough.  I show to you example #2.

http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-local/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=theshows;action=display;num=1129350724

If you look halfway down the page you will see the setlist ,which is the full Z album with a mixed encore. THis was the 2nd night of a two night run in Philly.

http://www.archive.org/details/mmj2005-10-12.4023.flac16

Here is the 1st night at Philly.  At st glance these are pretty mixed selists.  But as I said,  what the were really doing was just mixing upthe order they played the songs in.  THere is 3 diff. songs the 1st night then the 2nd night. 4 diff. songs the 2nd night then the 1st.  Thats about a 20% difference overall. These shows tok place just over 1 year ago.   There are no headlining shows where they played 2 nights in 1 city before this that I can see on the show lists.    I am svery hopeful for a 50% dif. from night to night this tour. I'd still go if it was the same setlist every night.

ChiefOKONO

I'd vote for going to multiple nights because you never really know what you're going to get!!! they can always throw in some nice surprises.  but of course i hope that the nights are as different as possible!
