ST. LOUIS POST DISPATCH
11-16-06

MY MORNING JACKET W/ Wax Fang
8 pm at the Pageant
6161 Delmar Boulevard
$25. 314-726-6161

As My Morning Jacket wound it's way through the past half decade or so, fans began to make the argument that (with apologies to Wilco and a few select others) the Kentucky quintet led by singer-songwriter Jim James might just be the best band in America.  That point of view was bolstered by the 2005 album "Z," a melting pot of pop, country and psychedelia that made many critics' Top 10 lists.  The brand new "Okonokos" is a live set that proves the band is as good - and indeed maybe better - onstage as it is in the studio.  Miss this show only if you want to miss the best band in America.

I love that last sentence.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

I'm a Louisville transplant in St. Louis.  I've been a fan of MMJ for awhile but have never been to a dang concert.  So, I'm obviously stoked for Monday...there's a lot of nostalgia brewing in me because I'm very proud of these guys I don't even know that are from the same great state as myself.  But there's a connection that surpasses state boundaries and the annals of geography - and that's the great sound produced by this band.  Thank you MMJ for coming to St. Louis to rock our world.

I heard that last time Jacket came to StL they played at Mississippi Nights...anyone go to that?
I hear MMJ played their first "official" concert on Bardstown Rd. in Louisville, KY at the Toy Tiger.  Does anyone know if this is true??  If so, how did I miss that?!?

BH

Hey jerm!  Another ST.  LOUIS fanatic!  I was at the MIssissippi Nights show last year and of course it was fantastic.  That's not a bad venue but this show is going to blow that one away.  Hopefully I will see you there.  I guess I should be in the Halo bar before the show so I can get in line to get in early and find a good spot to set up shop.  I guess I will wear my brown "Z" house shirt.  If you see me, let me know and I'll buy you a beer!  Hopefully, I will still be able to form words at that point.

I should know by tomorrow.  I think were going to Blueberry Hill first, good food if you haven't been.

BH

I have!  I see shows in the duck room in the basement alot.  I've seen Chuck Berry, Mojo Nixon, Split Lip Rayfield (x 3), and many more in the basement.  I havn't eaten there in long time but I remember it being good.

Looking forward to the show tonight.  Saw them last year at Miss. Nights.  Too bad that place is closing- good memories there.  anyway- can't wait to see them at the Pageant.  Good times will be had by all!!! :)

BH

Wow.  I am speechless.  Here is the setlist as best as I can remember.  I am pretty sure it is complete but I forgot where a couple songs fit in.  Please help me!

1. At Dawn
2. Lowdown
3. Gideon
4. What A Wonderful Man
5. Off The Record
6. It Beats 4 U
7. Wordless Chorus
8. Phone Went West
9. Lay Low
10. Dondante
11. X-Mas Curtain
12. One Big Holiday
13. Run Thru

ENCORE

14. They Ran
15. By My Car :)
16. Golden
17. Dancefloors
18. Mahgeetah
19. Anytime

They also played Butch Cassidy and I think Tonight I Want to Celebrate which gives us 21 total songs.  I can't remember where these two fit.  If somebody that got a setlist can please help.

Anyway, what a blast.  It was going to take a lot to live up to my expectations and they delivered.  The sound was fantastic.  I had a spot on the floor right in front of Carl, which put a bit further away from Jim than I wanted to be but I could easily run back and forth to where my heifiweisen was waiting for me.  I also had a nice view of Patrick.  Bo had the coolest light show going on behind him most of the night that gave him a great effect of just looking like a blacked out shadow all the time.  But the night belonged to two tone.  Seeing him slap that bass up close gave me a new appriciation of him.  They don't show enough of him in OKONOKOS so this was a real treat.

The music was unbelievable.  From those first notes of At Dawn to the last jam on Anytime I was mesmerized.  Off The Record just rules live.   The middle part of the outro on this song along with the stepped up light show is so friggin' Floydian I could hardly take it.  My first Phone Went West.  The jam at the end wasn't as long as maybe Austin for example but it was sick none the less.

Dondante was pretty typical but Jim did add some louder guitar parts during Carl's sax at the end.  It blended great together but I think I like it better with just the sax and the little soft repetitive guitar strokes that Jim usually does.
OBH and Run Thru to rock our socks off at the end of the set!

I was expecting some soft numbers to lead off the encore and they didn't dissapoint.  I most wanted to hear By My Car and Steam Engine.  I didn't get Steam but By My Car was chilling.  I teared up a bit.  There was a girl next to me for Ran/Car/Golden and we kept looking at each other with this wow look on our faces, and high fiving.  We were both feelin' it and it was a special moment between fans.  I wish I could remember her name.

Golden had a bit of cool little change at the end and Mahgeetah was just unbeleivable.  I take this song for granted to often.  The crowd was fantastic, from belting out wordless to jumping up and down for Mahgeetah.

I got to meet Tenn and one of her good friends that travelled an hour and a half from the fine state of Illinois.  Rock on girls!  Nice to meet you guys.  Tenn and I bought our merch together.  Moon shirt for me, OKONOKOS hoodie for her!  Cheers Tenn!

Wax Fang was everthing I expected and more.  I will be looking out for more of these guys.  I highly suggest getting to the show on time to see these guys.

Sorry for the long post but I needed to get this down on paper to document my wonderful evening.

My throat is dry, my head hearts, I'm tired and queezy but I have never felt better in my life! ;)

Long Live The Jacket!

Jimisms:

Jim said he wanted to go to the city museum but it was closed on Sundays.  He said he heard that it was like "somebody got a truck full of concrete and 50 hits of acid and went crazy" ;D

Instead he said they went up in the arch.  He said he loved the arch.  He called it a "steel rainbow form hell!" He loved the idea that it would still be there after us humans had all killed each other and the dinasours were back!

BH

BIG HUGE THANKSGIVING HUG from me to you my friend!   You made my night!!!!!!

I think "Tonight" was actually after Run Thru before the encore but I am starting to get confused.

Can you confirm that there were 21 songs?

Let me know if I can help in any way.  I'll B and P you real quick and figure it out if you want.  I tried my best to remember but I just couldn't put it all together.  My friend says they ended the encore with a "slow" song but I am not so sure.
