August 8-10, 2008

The planned festival at Liberty State Park in Jersey City may be over six months away, but it's already rumored to have some acts that I would actually leave Hoboken and go see! Radiohead, Bjork, The Strokes, Sonic Youth and more may play at this three-day festival.

This is an urban off-shoot of the west coast Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which is held in a desert, and requires pretty much camping out for three-days in order to attend.

Supposedly this event, plus other large concerts scheduled in the south Jersey and Philly areas caused the cancellation of the Vineland Music Festival poised to take place at the same time.

If this rumored list of performers turns out true, I'll be there. What about you?

Here's a list of possible acts:

August 8th
Headliner: Bjork
Sub-headliner: The Strokes
Others: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Broken Social Scene, The Rapture

August 9th
Headliner: The Flaming Lips
Sub-headliner: Sonic Youth
Others: My Bloody Valentine, Portishead, Mogwai

August 10th
Headliner: Radiohead
Sub-headliner: Sigur Ros
Others: Bright Eyes, Mars Volta, LCD Soundsystem

but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Now where did you see this rumored list of performers? because while that would be a pretty sweet lineup to begin with, and I could def see more than a few of those artists being there, I really doubt anything that substantial would've leaked yet...  and being that its so long off, Im sure they have a decent amount of work to do still on solidifying a line up.  In fact, I kinda remember seeing something like this more as a wish list for Coachella on a message board somehwere...

All that being said, it does seem almost definite that Radiohead will be the festival headliner, and there are many rumors that Saturday night headliner will be Jack Johnson.  And as long as the lineup is decent, Im sure there's a good chance I will be there as well, as its just so damn close.  Probably ruining my trip to Chicago for Lolla for the 3rd straight year though... oh well

mjkoehler

uhhh, if that second night is true, holy crap! umm WOW.

i'm about an hour away from Vineland I was souped up for the South jersey festival, good luck doing anything in North Jersey it will be $10.00 bux for water and overrun with cops.

knarf

10 buck waters and cops aside, at least it won't be in South Jersey...

this has been in the making for a while and yes, that's just a rumored lineup---but it's a good approx based on who's got albums coming out. fingers crossed for black crowes, MMJ, the verve, mars volta additions---this is huge for this area. but like you said, not sure how they're going to work it---i think most people attending will be locals because it's gonna be a cluster ** if people are driving in and camping. either way, it's 5 min walk for me so nice!!!!
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

I think it will be a lot of locals yes, but that there will also be a decent amount of people coming in to make this a destination festival as well, based on it being right outside nyc and the likelihood that Radiohead will be headlining.

Addressing your other point, it has already been announced that there definitely will not be camping, as it is against the regulations for Liberty State Park.  However, being a short ferry ride from nyc, this will not be a problem. Ive been to Lolla (in Chicago) the past 2 years and must say festivals are so much nicer when everyone can go home and shower come the end of the day...

Penny Lane

that's why i did bonaroo-VIP--showers and air conditioned bathrooms! i'm too old for that gross hippie camping--life is so much better when you're clean. and yeah, the thought of radiohead playing w/the statue of liberty in the background is pretty appealing---this is exciting. i always wondered how lollapalooza chicago worked. if they can make it work, i guess NYC/JC can, too
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

knarf

yeah, VIP is definitely the way to go when it comes to the camping festivals...  though its also nice when your sister lives 40 mins away from one (Langerado) and you can just crash at her place (which I plan on this year).

And yeah, Im getting excited for a festie in our backyard this year too...  Lolla's been great, and I love it being in the middle of chicago, but nothing beats the nyc skyline.  Hoping for a few differences from Lolla (maybe a bit later, at least a few longer set times), but overall Lolla's really made Chicago work as a great place for a festival... hopefully these coachella people can do the same for us.

Penny Lane

yeah, one of my concerns are the length of the shows...one of the best things about bonnaroo is that they can go on all night and not have to worry about the noise or light...the sets are def. gonna be shorter
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Penny Lane

well here's the lineup--i'm torn between going to this festival in my own backyard-literally 5 min walk home every night---and see the jacket at bonnaroo??? (which would be a 2 day drive!)

this lineup looks kind of weak--except for the new pornographers and black mountain

is anyone else baffled by all of these headlining slots that Jack Johnson is getting all over the place?

i mean, he is good. good equal pre-headliner at best.  they have him headlining next to Radiohead at two separate festivals... that is a joke.

what i really want to know is if he has done something over the last year that made him jump up to headliner status.

we need kings of leon to open for radiohead on one of the nights.  and for mmj to add on and open for them the other night.  that'll be a hoot.

I agree that its very strange to see JJ headlining festivals. But then I realize that his music has a very broad appeal which creates a large fan base and lots of money.
