From what I understand, the hotels are limited and sell out quickly.

I can't really speak to the hotel part of your question except to say that the venue hotel has long since been sold out, so don't plan on staying there.  Downtown PDX is not really too far (15-20 mins by car) and there are plenty of hotels to choose from. There's an inexpensive hotel near where I live that a friend of mine stayed in and said it was clean, etc. (if price is not an issue then: Ace Hotel, Inn at Northrop Station, etc.).:

Holiday Inn Express
2333 NW Vaughn Street
Portland, OR 97210

The concert area is not terribly huge and feels like being at a neighborhood park, but I'm bad with judging crowd sizes by number...  I've only seen one show there so far (Death Cab - not impressed) and I found that the sound was not loud enough.  I think it's because of the zoning/sound restrictions that the crabby neighbors have imposed (thus the really early 6:30 show time - they don't want folks hanging around late!). But it is a nice place to be, with various bars, gardens, etc.  The vibe is super-cool and laid back.  It is all GA, it's a natural amphitheater type where people bring blankets and hang out all over the place (I think beach chairs are verboten); directly in front of the stage people just stand like sardines as usual.  It'll definitely be a good time.  But it is because of the "family" type ambience that I didn't want this show to be my last of the tour, I want to have more of an in-your-face experience - thus Seattle on Sunday!

The Wizzard will likely have much more to say about it as she has no doubt seen many more shows there than I have. :)

OH!! VERY IMPORTANT RE:  HOTELS, MOTELS, HOLIDAY INNS:

DON'T PUT OFF BOOKING IN OREGON!

last summer i couldn't find a room ANYWHERE for 20 miles outside of eugene.  at 3 am the night clerk at one told me my best bet was to sleep in the parking lot and shower at the truckstop across the street in the morning.  that is exactly what i did.   :P

he said that there are so many travelers in oregon that  you won't find a room available  after 5pm anywhere in the state.

i'm usually a "fly by the seat of my pants" traveller, but never again in oregon.  *grave head shake*

We decided to add this show to our trip because we are coming from so far away. Seattle will be amazing. This Troutdale show should be fun as hell as well. Thanks for the hotel advice.
