So I'm going solo, coming from MASS. I was going to take the train from albany or Hudson, NY. Thats the easy part. My issue is the next morning, the earliest train leaves at about 7 am. I cant afford a local Hotel for myself at 400 or so. Would It be safe to hang out at Penn station for several hours, on New Years Eve. Or does anyone have any other suggestions. I do not know NYC, so driving is possible, but should I. So any help would be thanked. Peace, a fan from the Berkshires.... :o

Have you checked in to any hostels?  I really wouldn't advise hanging out at Penn Station, and driving in to the city could be costly given parking.
God sure baked a lot of fruitcake, baby.

fawlty36

No I haven't. I see some of the parking is around 35-40 for 24 hours. Thats no big deal, it's just leaving. I wish there was another person or two who would like to split a nice close hotel, that would be great. I'm not a kid anymore. I just looking forward to a great show. So i'm looking into something thats like arcross the street, to stay. So any takers please let me know. Thanks tom

you should check out craigslist. under rooms/shares or sublets/temporary. folks list their private apts for short term rental much cheaper than the hotels and personally i think it is better.

last time i was there for radio city. i got a place on upper west side, nice walkup for $120 a night. nice place and all.

it still may be tough with NYE but if you look now, you just might get lucky...

good luck.

there's a pool and a pond... pond's good for you...

...it might seem sketchy to hang out around a train station till it opens but it is going to be NYE and there will probably be a massive amount of people doing the same thing...but you should really just try to save some money for a hotel, driving there and then all the way back after a four hour show sounds like it could be a real pain in the ass....

the pod hotel is new & has a single room for $159, still that's FAT in this economy. It's really wierd cuz GR8 rooms @ GR8 places in Vegas are going 4 REAL CHEAP!

Fawlty, I think you have a few options that do not necessarily involve sleeping.  :)

1.  Double check that the line that you'll be taking out of NYC won't be adding extra trains on NYE.  I used to take the NE Corridor trains which normally stop running at 1:41 a.m. and do not begin again until 6 or 7 in the morning.  On NYE, they usually add trains at 2:40 and 3:40.

2.  Stay out and have a good time after the MMJ show.  There's at least one after show at BB's and if you're not a Duo fan, you can hang out at Lucille's (at BB's just a separate room) or any number of other bars.

3.  Head to Penn Station after MMJ.  The train staion doesn't close and there is a lot of security there.  There is a lounge, but it's only available to folks with an Amtrak ticket.  If you're OK standing or sitting on the floor, you'll be fine.  I've missed the last train and had to wait until the first train and never had any troubles.

Since you're driving, also look into hotels in NJ.  You'll be able to take the PATH or NJ Transit train in and out and those hotels will be a lot cheaper.

Good luck!!!

Check out a hotel called the Chelsea Lodge (not Chelsea Hotel).  I stayed there for MSG and for a single it was $120 and when I checked out the dude told me he still had singles available for NYE (always planning ahead I am!!).  A sweet hotel located between 8th & 9th on 20th (I'm pretty sure 20th, possibly 21 or 22 or 23); just google Chelsea Lodge.  It's in a pretty good location near subway. :)
My jacket's gonna be cut slim and checked

fawlty36

Yea, I'm calling the Chelsea in the Am, they have a 3 night Min. So I need a manager. Trying for 1 night. so lets hope. Then I can relax. I also believe  I need therapy, MMJ is playing constant. Downloaded every show, can't stop. I mean I've listened to nothing else in months. No DEAD, no Allmans, no Mule. Christ, I hope Warren isn't upset at me. Please help. T

Grand central a couple years ago was packed with twenty-somethings waiting for the morning train (including myself). I don't think it would be dangerous, but the drive the next day was rough. Sounds like you might have a train ride to catch a few hours of sleep, otherwise plan on napping in the car before you drive.

maybe stay with a nice cabbie    ;)
other times I can barely see

Put on your best gear, take that train down, be very outgoing (not too deperate) to every girl or group of girls you meet, tell them you have some great bud and you make a great omlette and you need a place to crash.  Could be the best night of your life.

My wife reads this I'm dead. Trust me I'm going to the show. But It's been 20 years since I've been to the City. I'm just a country boy. I'm going early to go to Paul Booths studio for a bit. Waiting for a email or two on rooms. I should be all set. But you guys crack me the F*** up. , but many great ideas, and the strange thing is, I'm a cook. Bud is NO issue up here in the hilltowns. Peace.

You may want to consider staying in CT.  You can park at most of the train stations, New haven Bridgeport, I am getting a hotel in Stamford CT becuase its much much cheaper and its partially on my way home, so when I split from the Duo show at BBs, going to Grand Central to catch a late train to Stamford, its the first stop in CT I believe.  Metro North runs trains all night I think they all do on NYE..

...check about those trains times, usually the last of the trains out of Grand Central are around two in the morning...but that is a good idea to try to find somewhere in CT to stay...
