It sounds like the Chicago folks got a really great show tonight and I'm so glad!! Part of me was worried the boys would be a little off, but never fear...the jacket is obviously make of wrinkle-free material.

QuoteLet me say this people........when/if a tape surfaces ( saw a couple
of mics on tripods in the aisles ) you should be super stoked to know
that you'll get to hear the most amazing version of Phone Went West
that you'll ever hear in your entire life. Hands down, there isn't any question about it.

They threw a jam in the middle like none ever heard before, a real treat I felt. The same goes with Dondante. Also some extra choppy goodness and chaotic jamming towards the end before Carls sax solo.

They played Where to Begin, nice treat. Tons of Evil Urges stuff, all sound great. And it never fails, Off The Record live, does it for me every time. Jim said some flattering things about Chicago, and all was well.

................other than the fact that I got no Steam, No IWSYS, and a shocker, no Run Thru. Other than the complaint of not getting the songs I wanted ( which is uber selfish ) the boys sounded great, and appeared to be having a really good time.

I can't wait for tomorrow. I'll try and get some clips up here in the am
Thanks, just what the doctor ordered...was he restricted in his rockin??

Not really.  He didn't do any leg kicks and didn't do a knee slide during wordless, but there was plenty of rockin and he still had the cowboy boots on.

I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight.

SERIOUSLY!?!?

THEY BROKE OUT WHERE TO BEGIN!?!?

Yeah. I was exhausted until 3 seconds ago. Thanks Sass! I'm not going to sleep either.

I was shocked, and let out a "Yes!" when they did it.  I felt like I was the only person in my area familiar with it.

I'm so exhausted (I just got back into town after a 13 hour drive) and I still have one more night to go.  I pray that we get "Steam Engine" tomorrow night.

Come on now, I feed off of this kinda stuff. I want details. How grown was Jim's facial hair?

ultravisitor

I was in the first row behind the pit.  The facial hair is gone.  He's smooth.

Evening Rebel

Jim James.

Sans facial hair.

Can't... think...must..sleep.

Yeah, just as soon as they started "Dondante" I thought, "It'd be nice if we heard a different solo" and when they got to the solo, it was indeed different.  It lost its way a bit towards the end, approaching the sax solo, but it was still pretty awesome.

cantrell-r

I would say the guys seemed to be happy to perform...Bo and Carl were very animated...I think Two-Tone could be the new "Ox"--very solid grooves...Patrick is the absolute heart and soul of the band.  Jim looks sweet with his side-chops and long blue coat that he came out in.

I think Gideon was a highlight, Magheetah was great,  WTB and Evelyn were great surprises, and I have to say the EU stuff sounds better live than on the album, particularly Thank you, too, and Highly Suspicious.

I hope everyone has a great night tomorrow night.  I'm jealous.  I'd love to go again--I have a feeling some fun stuff will go down.

Wow! Where To Begin?!?!?!?! :o
Can't wait to see tonights setlist.
How loud can silence get?

ms. yvon

again with the specialness.

now sitting in my friend's apt, green holiday lights illuminating the dining room.  freshly showered with a cup of genmaicha tea (from metropolis coffee.  oh, how i love them), watching the wind blow the powerlines around outside the window.

the chicago theatre is gorgeous.  gilded and baroque and luminous.
there were two new e.u. owl banners hanging behind the stage.  i got to my seat a bit early:  watched the crew going through their set up, listened to the crowd filing in.  when the bears came out, i noticed that pooch was on the left side and the girl bear was on the right.  thought, "huh.  new places for the bears."  about 10 min before the show started, a couple of the techs came out and did a quick bear-position swap.   ;D

putting the previous poster's set list in vertical form...
band came out at 8:05, according to wendy.  ;)

--evil urges
--touch me pt 1
--otr
--aluminum park
--i'm amazed

--thank you too
--sec walkin
--way he sings--why does my mind blow to bits, indeed.   :D
(at this point some people in the row in front of us left for a few minutes and the very friendly guys in front of us grabbed my hand and pulled me into the front row.  he said, "someone should be here while they're gone."   ;D thanks for sharing!)

--jim greets the crowd, thanks chicago for all that chicago has given the world.
--mahgeeta--ARE YOU READY TO GOOOOOOO?  jim's guitar looked chrome.  crazy shiny.  bo was sporting the biggest smile this entire song.

--jim tells crowd he was serious about all that chicago has given the world...
--golden--this was the first time i took a moment to take in the big picture:  the band, stage, lights, the crowd.

--where to begin--first suprise of the night:  BEAUTIFUL!
--librarian--again, the delicacy of this song in performance is stunning.
--evelyn!!--as the band got ready to play this carl, tom and jim gathered around the drum riser.  jim counted out the 1!  2!  1, 2, 3, 4! on his fingers and they launched in.  right before the last words of the song the band froze in position...the longer they held their poses, the more the crowd hollered!  sometimes at these shows i just laugh from all the momentum and the crowd fervor.  fantastic!

--war begun--SWEET JESUS.  :o wendy asked me if the name of the song was, "oh, fuck!" b/c it was all i could manage to say when they started playing it.   ;D --DAMN.  wonderful to hear this live!!
(worth mentioning the tennessee fire songs in order moment here...still holding a torch for an appearance of "it's about twilight now" in a show  ;) )

--lay low--cape and strobes!   quotes of the evening from my friends re:  lay low:  allison, "i don't know what happened.  i couldn't stop dancing."
--phone went west--my note says, "jim, where are you going?"--they opened the song up in the middle.  i think the new arrangement disarmed me a bit b/c when they brought the song back around for "THERE'LL BE A KNOCK ON YOUR BACK DOOOOOOR" it broadsided me emotionally.  whoof.

--gideon!
--dondante--where didn't this song go?!  :o there is a physical phenomenon with this song:  while the music and vocals are blowing your body back, that bass keeps your feet rooted to the spot.  kind of fucking fantastic.  damn.

--smokin from shootin--build!
--touch me pt. 2--DANCE PARTY

-------------
--as the band came out for a few more songs, jim talked about having to cancel the chicago shows last oct. b/c of his accident.  said that he wasn't 100% but was feeling pretty good.  also said he was disappointed to have not performed the benefit for barack obama at schuba's.  more excited words about the election, chicago and obama, then, "Let's do this shit!"

--wordless chorus!--nothing but love coming from the crowd at this point.
--highly suspicious--DANCE PARTY, PT. DEUX!
--anytime!--jesus, these men were throwing down tonight!
(here i got a cramp in my side.  and i ate light, dammit!  ;D )
--one big holiday.--as patrick started this song the crowd roared.

SO GOOD TO SEE THESE MEN AND THEIR CREW, making music, kicking our boo-tays and filling our hearts.

OH, THIS FEELING IT IS WONDERFUL!   [smiley=beer.gif]

and...it is late and my computer battery is toast for tonight.

hope to see more of you tomorrow!

hey, great to meet you alady!

--on the facial hair front:  jim is indeed clean shaven, and carl is sporting a well established moustache.
"i don't mean to brag, i don't mean to boast, but we like hot butter on our breakfast toast."

^^GREAT detail! Thanks! Where to Begin!? AMAZING!!!!!   ;D  :D  ;D
One good thing about music: when it hits you feel no pain.

Ahh, Ms. Yvon... excellent recap.

I think about Wednesday and my head buzzes.

QuoteI don't want to sound too full of myself but if they played it again because of the posts about the acoustic chorale video that'd be sweeeet.

I wonder if during his healing process Jim meandered over to the forums to see what the fans were up to. If that's the case, then hey Jim! A little Where to Begin would be nice on New Years. Along with some Strangulation and a little chug from the Steam Engine.

Mmmmkay? Thanks!

I can't wait to hear about tonight's show...
