I saw them in Boston, and was worried going in that they were gonna be exhausted.   I saw no sign of it, but their schedule has been crazy-

shows on 4 straight days Oct 28 - 31, ending with the big Halloween bash.

Then one day off followed by Toronto and Boston back to back - no wonder they were tired the following day- that's playing 7 out of the last 8 days!!

I listened to this at work with small speakers and thought they were off as well.  Then I listened to it with very high quality headphones and they sound just fine.  Talk show performances play tricks on yer ears especially if you're listening through a TV.

Everything always sounds better with headphones. They were definitely off-pitch. Jim's wordless falsetto toward the end was right-on, however. The rest of it was kinda cringe-worthy. That's okay, though, a lot of musicians I love who have great voices sing poorly on late night talk shows; I have no idea why. Nerves? Bad monitors? Who cares, Jim is still a god.

I listened to it through a high-end home system.  They were off key...a lot.  Honestly, I don't care for the song at all, so I might be biased (though my bias isn't working in the right direction for this crowd!).

it was alright....I thought M.Ward sounded the best out of all of them, and Jim's cooning at the end was really beautiful.  Their Say Please performance on Conon was 100 times better though.  

On a positive note...Pitchfork seemed to like it.   :D

Uh, let's be honest The Roots threw this whole performance OFF.  It was nice they let them join in but it didn't really serve the song well.  This is the best song on the record and they killed it live when I saw them.  I agree that late night shows always suck (except for MMJ's first show on Conan!!)

I think it's the fact that the song is not in the context of a real show.  I mean they wait around for hours and then have one song to play like they are in the middle of a concert?  It's just not natural, and it always shows.  I've pretty much seen the worst version of songs by bands I really love performed on late night television.  Who really gives a shit what Dear God sounded like on Jimmy Fallon, I mean his interviews suck 90% of the time and the show was specifically designed for success in that area.

Pitchfork is a leaf blowing in the wind.  They ranked the Fleet Foxes album better than At Dawn, It Still Moves and The TN Fire.  It's stupid, I'm just glad that Jim doesn't even really give a shit about the media.  They could have/should have just skipped Fallon.

Sorry Sweatboard, but I thought it was awesome.  The Roots are one of my favorite hip-hop bands (contrary to popular belief, their music is definitely not rap), and I think they always add a new flavor to whatever they play on.  They added a whole new funk to JAy-Z's entire catalog between unplugged and his final performance tour (before his premature retirement).  You just have to look at it in a different light.  It's like saying the MOF is not jacket even though Jim is there.  That's just my opinion though.

I thought the live drumming by Questlove was a cool way to do it instead of the sample on the Omnichord, but I'm not sure if it all came off that great.  It's wierd, I thought they sounded a bit rough vocally when I listened on the computer but when I got home and watched it, it seemed much better.

I totally agree that bands don't seem to ever sound there best on late night shows.  No great way to warm up your vocals?  Unfamiliar equipment?  Monitors?

yeah quest love's afro definitely messed with the frequencies on that performance.  M's vocals were spot on though I thought.

Sounds like people have a mixed reaction to the performance (I like it!).  I'm eventually going to post this on my blog but thought I'd share it here first for those of you that did like it or have not heard it yet.
