I'm unsure if there's been a topic on this yet, but experiencing it live and then listening back on the MPP show, this thing was SO badass. I'm not sure if the lighting has been the same at every show, but it's awesome to see a further dedication to lighting and making the show feel like the event that an MMJ show is. This intro song is like turning the dial to 11 for the rest of the show.

I totally agree! Eminence Front intro is awesome! I have always thought they should cover this tune.
This feeling is wonderful, don't you ever let it out.

I'm trying to figure out what this intro is.

You guys are calling it the Eminence Front intro because it sounds similar, right?   Or do you really think they are covering it?  For example, this review

http://www.merchantsofrock.com/morning-jacket-merriweather-post-pavilion-512010/

lists it as a cover.    Now I've listed to the boot and and Who track and I hear the similarity but pretty sure they aren't the same.... besides the tinkley keyboard repeating, it's definitely different notes, different rhythm...

At the opening, fans of 20th-century classical music would've noticed a loop of minimalist composer Steve Reich's "Four Organs," which the quintet punctuated with thundering chords

So that was an interesting lead and not anything I had seen mentioned elsewhere on the board.   But I listened to that online (*) and pretty sure that's not right.   It sounded mildly similar in style and it wouldn't surprise me if it was a different song by that composer (**).

If anyone has any ideas I'd be curious.   Espec. any comments from the band about what it is, whether they were trying to cover the Who, etc....

(*)  I would NOT recommend listening to Four Organs unless you are REALLY bored and have no sharp objects nearby.   Not kidding.

(**) Someone with time and patience could listen to other Steve Reich music online.   For example, I thought I had solved the mystery by listening to Music for 18 Musicians.... it sounded like Pulses 9 or Pulses 10, but not exactly.... I could not proceed without genuine fear of brain damage (again, not kidding) Seems like a job for JohhnYYac or SaraBanana.

Did someone call my name?

I seem to recall the intro referred to as "Eminence Front" by MMJ in their tweet of the Birmingham setlist, but I'm at work and my @$@%#% laptop won't display the setlist picture (http://twitpic.com/1h7r7z)!

I never thought it was a pure cover, just reminiscent of The Who.  If you go back to my review of Birmingham, I refer to the opening as similar to the opening of Baba O'Reilly (bottom post here: http://www.mymorningjacket.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1271788415/30).

That's all I've got for now.
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

The Birmingham set list's first line reads "One Big".

Uh, okay.  I thought I saw it referred to EF somewhere besides this forum, though.  ??????

Hi guys - i've been lurking on the MB for a while and felt i should throw my thought in on this since i did the concert report for Merchants of Rock.

I incorrectly used the term "cover" in the article, but I felt needed to be noted since their is such a strong similarity b/t the intro for the show and the beginning of the Who track.

On second thought and listen, it seems that "sample" may have been the best term.  They sampled the intro notes and beat from EF and laid their own instrumentals on top.

in any case...greateffingshow.

i also listed Carried Away as a song of Carl's since I have heard it on his myspace page, but the website, Consequence of Sound is saying it is off the next MMJ record (along with Friends Again).  Does anyone have any insight into that?

Hey - as the original poster, let me make sure you know I'm just picking nits here - thought your review was well-written and good to have you here.

It's not really a sample, either, it's just very, very similar to The Who's use of layered synths (Baba O' Riley, Won't Get Fooled Again, Eminence Front) The intro in question is very similar to Eminence Front, except it's a lot heavier, and Eminence Front's intro uses a synthesized drum, so of course it's not a cover, but I do believe it's heavily, heavily influenced by The Who.

I'm a huge Who fan, hah.
I NEEDED IT MOST WHENEVER tbh
