I am replaying the St. Augustine Show in my head, and the one song that stands out is His Master's Voice.

Of course Steam Engine is the one that always the best, but looking at the set lists for the tour, I am lucky to catch the only time Yim played it.

I also think it is the most relevant song he has ever written.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish this were a MMJ song - a modern day At Dawn or other brilliant slow song....  one of the bummers of MOF existing is that JJ farms some of his great ideas to them.... now we hear this song as a rarity instead of most shows.

Totally agree...really great songs like this one all seem to be united by some subtle spiritual strength about them. Oh wait, that's how it is with almost every song Jim sings/writes!
This post inspired me to revisit the MOF album, and I finally realize how brilliant it is. There are no borish parts, no musical or lyrical spaces to be filled, and no superfluous noise. I actually feel physically full after listening to it...
really wish i could have heard master's voice live, lucky dawgs.

the mof album was on heavy rotation for me a few months back.  lots of wonderful stuff going on all over that thing.  different songs stood out to me at different times, i guess depending on my mood.  but his master's voice grabbed me from the very 1st listen.  it's so soothing & honest; just a beautiful, beautiful song.

i was nearly moved to tears when they played this @ the mof show i went to.  let me just say that i'd gotten some very sad & pretty scary news earlier that day & was so upset that i almost didn't go to the show.  but some good people talked me into going anyway & i found the whole experience to be very uplifting.  when they played his masters voice in particular i remember feeling very calm & ok with all of the awfulness from earlier in the day.  this feeling of absolute peace washed over me & okay, i did get a little weepy, but in a good way.

mmj didn't play this @ mpp & although i would've loved to hear it, i'm seeing it more along the lines of i didn't NEED to hear it that night.  if that makes any kind of sense.

This was my favorite tune of MOF from the start..."rollin' dice with Christ at twilight"...I love it.

Definitely the best song on the MOF album and IMHO, one of the best songs Jim has written.  Great imagery in the song; and some great lines like the "rolling dice with Christ at twilight" line and "you're only gonna hear what you wanna hear".

His Master's Voice is truly one of Jim's best.  If you have not already, read the full lyrics - it's a highly distilled treatise on religion with a view that resonates with me.  I had the good fortune of hearing it twice in 3 nights at the NYC MOF shows.  Very emotional.
