Here's my advice, go on priceline and name your own price for a 4 star hotel in Stamford CT.  It will give you the Marriott or the Hilton.  You can get a room for well, well under a hundred bucks, and the train ride on the Metro North is only about a half hour in to Grand Central.  Its what I did for NYE '08 and it worked out great.

Quotefor those of you that live on the east coast...would you guys recommend staying in new jersey, renting a car and driving into the city to see the shows, or would you stay in the city and taxi it to the shows? i'm flying in from the west coast...any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. :)

We are coming from Pittsburgh. Im thinking of staying in Secaucus, NJ its about 15 mins from the city. I'd prob take a bus or taxi into the city for most of the day and just go to the show later that evening. Im trying to find a place for around 100-125. (splitting that between 3 people)

If you're staying in Secaucus, you might just want to take a NJ Transit Train from Secaucus Junction Station to Penn Station NYC. It's only one stop, about nine minutes and runs around $3.75 each way. Trains run quite often all day long, I'm just not sure what time the last train out of NYC is.  Here's a link:

I've done this several times for NYC shows, but I stayed at the Meadowlands Sheraton and took their shuttle to Sec. Jct.
Cheaper than staying in NYC, but yet not far away.

There is a rail connection from Newark Liberty Airport also. Same line. For those flying in and not wanting to rent a car, this might be an option.  There are hotels by the airport that have shuttles to and from the terminals, then you'll take a mono-rail type shuttle from the Airport terminal to Newark Liberty Train Station. Your mono-rail transfer is part of the ticket cost to get to and from NYC thru NJ Transit.

Newark Liberty Train Station is 1 or 2 stops before Secaucus, about a twenty minute train ride to NYC.

thanks for the advice. All the NJ hotels are around 100-125. Im not looking for anything special. Just a place to sleep and something that isn't a dump.

If anyone is interseted in staying outside of NYC, I just got the Meadowlands Sheraton through Priceline for $80.00 a night for Friday and Saturday. 3.5 star East Rutherford,N.J. Free self parking.Total with taxes = $100.00 per night.

As I posted earlier, I've stayed here before for shows in NYC. Free hotel shuttle to/from Secaucus Jct. train staion (5-10 minutes away). Train fare is $4.00 each way to NYC Penn Station. Then it's either  walk,(a bit of a hike -26-30 blocks), a cab, or subway to the pre-party. Cab will be about $10.00, subway $2.00 - $2.50.

A couple of things to note if anyone plans on doing this:

Hotel shuttle stops running at 11:00 pm, so you'll need to get a cab from Sec.Jct. back to hotel after the show -$10.00-$15.00. There's always a line of cabs there until well after the last train leaves. No waiting.

During the week I believe the last train out of Penn Station is around 2:00 am, but on weekends it's 1:20. So if you miss the last train out,the next ones are around 5:00am.

I know it's not as convenient as staying in NYC obviously, but I'm figuring it'll cost with taxes, train, and a cab after show in Secaucus about $120.00 per night + getting to T5 pre-party.

This works for me, especially since I'll be driving up from the Jersey Shore and I don't have to worry about my car here, or pay to park it. That savings offsets the train, and cabs, plus I can get into the city easily anytime throughout each day.

I was able to get a room at Hotel Carter (or Carter Hotel.....I forget) in NYC which is like 10 blocks from Terminal 5. I've read some reviews that portray the place as less than elegant but I don't really mind. I'm just looking for a place to crash at the end of the night.

Through Easyclicktravel.com the hotel came out to be like 90 bucks a night. I got 2 nights and after fees and taxes it was like 220ish. Not too bad.
