Every song, every night was masterful.  The way they built up "They Ran" and extended "Gideon" - their ability to cover such a wide range genres and the amount of respect from fans Jim got when he sang acoustic - did you hear what they did to "Phone Went West"?!?! and how big and fun sounding was "Tonight I Wanna Celebrate" - The boys were firing on all cylinders last week, accomplishing an enormous feat, no only with ease, but playing their music as if they were trying to fill Madison Square Garden.

After leaving this monumental Rock & Roll experience, I became worried - My Morning Jacket has set a new precedent.  The whole world was watching them. Head Bowery Promoters decided against going to Elton John and Leon Russell to witness My Morning Jacket explode through "It Still Moves".  Fans from around the globe flew in.  New York city blogs had up to the minute reviews (all positive) of these shows.  I met a die hard Phish Phan who ate his Saturday Phish ticket and threw down on an EXPENSIVE "Evil Urges" ticket because he had such a monumental experience the two nights before.  Needless to say, these shows did not go unnoticed and I am close to certain not a soul left that venue unimpressed with the musicianship which occurred on stage.  This is why I worry - the level in which the just competed at is so fuckin' high, they are going to have to be pretty committed to stay on top.

I truly believe the best way for My Morning Jacket to comfortably sit in throne of "America's Greatest Rock & Roll Band" is if they take all these songs and covers from deep in their catalog and present them in their live show.  I hope they gained a lot of confidence by reworking these old songs and playing them live - hearing the crowds response to "Remnants", "Lil Billy" "It's About Twilight" "Honest Man" "Into The Woods" & "O The One Thats Real" should help confirm to the band that these songs don't need to be left on the sideline.  This showcase proved how diverse their catalog is and really illustrated their ability to effortless blend genres of Metal, Rock & Roll, Folk, Funk and Soul together.  They have it all.  They just proved they're masters of a craft and it doesn't matter what song they play - they all have room to be included in their set list.

I hope this week helped the band grow, reflect and gain even more confidence that they are truly the best in the game.

Well said.  So many bands once they hit a certain level tend to forget their back catalog.  They tend to focus on the new stuff.  Let's hope this doesn't happen to them.

God, you should have heard how good "Tonight I wanna celebrate", "They Ran" and "Butch Cassidy" sounded - there is no need for them to forget those songs.

I couldn't have said it any better...I've always wanted to express these feelings regarding covers and older material, but I didn't want to jump the gun. Now seems like the best time to bring it up.

Like you said, hopefully T5 was the confidence booster/refresher that was needed by all. Plus, with the new album coming out, they will have a HUGE amount of tunes to draw from for a band that has only been around for a decade (and really under the general public's magnifying glass for only 7 years).

It warms me innards to think that the band can still be considered young and full of powerful potential  :)
