I've listened to and seen this band play live for several years now.  To watch the evolution has been amazing.  Last live show I saw was jazz fest 2010 where I thought they were hands down the best sound in a setting of an amazing compilation of talent.  Pearl jam headlined that one and got the numbers.  But if you love music and paid attention, there was no doubt where your attention should have been focused.  What I saw tonight was amazing.  There was a power and intensity that I've never seen by these guys before.  One of my previous favorite shows was in mountain view, Ca at Neil young's bridge school benefit.  The backdrop was a perfect atmosphere for their unique sound and I thought they were at their best that night.  What they showed here tonight though was an elevation.  Beautiful 70s weather with a little breeze that you could only find in NOLA this time of year.  Somewhat thinned crowds as was halloween and a local Saints game.  What transpired was difficult to put to words.  The beautiful, soul driven songs that fans of mmj love took on a greater intensity than I've ever personally experienced.  A rock n roll edge not seen before came out combined with the old sound in a way that could not have been more powerful.
Jim James said they were going to take a break and I assume get a little r&r and write some new songs.  With all new band members in place and time to learn each other, I can't wait to see what's next.  Simply amazing.  Congratulations to you guys, you have done amazing things.  My only regret is that I fear you are reaching a point where my aging self is gonna have to stand 200 yards back from all the other fans from here on out.  Congratulations again!  You are creating something that resonates and is unique.  Nothing better you can do in life than that.

Maybe you missed 2004? I agree, Carl and Bo are hardly "new"...

I'm confused by the new band members. What the what? I've heard the hiatus rumors from others, too.

Sadness.

I understand the withdrawl symptoms kicking in, but we had to know there would be a number of months after Voodoo for the boys to continue recording and rest up.  Ryan P. said we could expect a tour beginning in April or May on the order of 2008, so I don't blame the boys for taking a 5-6 month break from the kind of touring they did from April to October this year.  And they do have an album to finish!

I missed T5 #1-4 but caught the boys in one form or another 9 times in the past year.  I think my wife would be okay with me taking a break from live MMJ (thank goodness for the tapers, Okonokos, Acoustic Chorale, Rockpalast, and Charleston!).  In the meantime, we have each other.
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Johnny, it's nice to know - remember when I kissed your sweaty scalp :P

I do not want to talk about a Jacket hiatus:

QuoteI do not want to talk about a Jacket hiatus:

Hiatus sounds too serious, it's more like an inhale to quote Bigsky's words of wisdom:
QuoteI wouldn't call it a drought, but more like an inhale...that was a crazy summer/fall of MMJ. I think this time of inhale will let us catch our breath and be ready for the new album & a late winter/spring tour.

I guess I am one of the few people not really surprised by this break. I mean this past year has been an extremely busy time for the band and I'm sure a little rest is in order. This may sound extreme but I honestly think that Voodoo was the last show until Bonnaroo or perhaps SXSW. This makes good sense considering they just got thru playing an epic 5 night run at T5, opened up their hometown arena, and headlined VOODOO. Throw those three things added to a pretty long spring/summer tour, then a fall mini-tour and I say the boys deserve a nice break to sit back and finish up on the new album. Now don't get me wrong, I wish they would keep on playing right on thru, but just think how great it's gonna be when they come back after not playing live for about 7 or 8 months. Talk about epic...
