You mean, except for At Dawn and Snowy Bramble?
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

There is a pretty awesome exhibit "THE BOOMBOX" going on downtown here at Clic Gallery.

QuoteClic Gallery presents THE BOOMBOX, Lyle Owerko's outstanding tribute to the definitive symbol of street culture and New York City.

So are we going to play a huge game of ultimate frisbee in the park???
It would be too much fun. Or maybe we could make a large human pyramid. We should at least get together for a forum group photo...

Really want to check this place out...came highly recommended from a friend. Can any New Yorkers vouch for it?

Nom nom nom.

Oddly enough, I wandered into that place on New Year's Day after MSG '08.  It looked pretty cool, but I didn't try anything.

It was my "only in New York" moment on that trip  ;D

If anyone wants to meet Joel (the new guy coming from Canada, see his thread) and me for a late lunch at Zen Palate on TUESDAY, please PM me.   It's a vegetarian Chinese restaurant within walking distance of McGee's.   We're gonna be there at 2:30-ish then go to the pre-show right at 4.

My apologies for cross-posting 3 places.   I figured that was less annoying than a whole new thread for this, which I realize has a pretty limited appeal (maybe none!).   But, if you are in town with nothing to do and like vegetarian food (or are adventurous), the more the merrier.   Just give me a heads up so I can get a table for us.

What have you guys been up to? Did any of you get together on the off night?

:)

EDIT: I just saw the Joe's Pub thread, so that answers one of my questions!  ::)

Anybody do or see any awesome shit in NYC other than MMJ?

I spent a chunk of 2 days cruising through Central Park.  Been to NYC, and Central Park tons of times, but never been to the upper parts of the park, I want to say it was called 'The North Woods'....absolutely amazing in fall, the colors were beautiful, streams were flowing, just awesome.

I also spent the better part of Wednesday in the MoMA....wow!  Some amazing art in there including some of the most famous paintings known to man, saw the original Van Gogh Starry Night and Rosseau's Sleeping Gypsy, and tons of other amazing art.

Went down to the financial district and ground zero.  Not really sure why I wanted to go down there other than it was a part of NYC I'd never checked out, interesting but not too exciting.

Had every intention of going to the Museum of Natural History on Saturday....but somehow didn't get out of bed until 2 p.m. I've been there before but wanted to go again.

Had some amazing food.  My favorite Italian restaurant ever, in Greenwich Village, Villa Mosconi...a NYC tradition for me http://www.villamosconi.com/.  Also had an amazing dinner at Momofuku Noodle Bar http://www.momofuku.com/noodle-bar/  and of course, plenty of pizza.  I also think I must have hit up 30+ different bars and pubs, including Finnerty's, the SF Giants bar not too far from Joe's.

what did you do?

ralph

I walked around, a lot!  Such an amazing city.  To be honest I didnt do a lot of sight-seeing or touristy stuff cause I just ran out of time (damn pretzels!).

i did go to Central Park though.  My plan was to listen to Z to psych myself up for that night, but ended up just sitting in the middle of the park and listened to the sights and sounds that went past.  I was blown away that you can be in the middle of the park and not hear the city that surrounds you.

Will definitely be coming back to NYC, and I'll bring Mrs Ralph with me next time, she'll love it.  I wonder when MMJ are playing there again?!
At my house, we call them uh-ohs.

Keep me posted, would love to show you and wife around Brooklyn

Yeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhh Central Parrrrrrkkkkk was the place to beeee...... well, so was Greenwich Village...so was........

I walked a lot, but I think I may have driven more...?  I'd always had a pretty noxious anxiety about driving in NYC, and I finally felt composed enough and with sufficient driving experience to have at it. (I "wore my hard helmit"  :-X)  I also figured this would familiarize me with a greater portion of the city so that when walking time was on, I'd know what I was doing... (cue scene from last year when I was in Manhattan with a friend and we were going to Strawberry Fields..... and were totally on 72nd Street.....but were on the east side of Central Park and not the west..........it wasn't the end of the world, but we had a Phil Lesh show to catch and were on the clock!!) I definitely oriented myself to the area a helluva lot better this time around, and most of the walking I did was through Central Park or from C.P. to Terminal 5. I did rectangles around C.P. like 10 times and drove through Harlem a few times... learned not to go anywhere near Times Square with the car if I valued my... well, anyone's life. More than dangerous even I'd say it was just plain annoying. Waiting waiting and moooore waiting...

And food, definitely FOOOOOD! Found an organic gluten-free pizza place!?!? That was spectacular... when I did walk, I found the streets would turn into magickal havens of things I'd wanted or things of interest.... and Greenwich Village was confusing (not so organized as numbered streets around C.P.!) but it felt pretty rich with history. I listened to Simon & Garfunkel's "Bleecker Street" while I walked up and down parts of it the day of Carl's show...

All in all, after I got acclimated to the layout of Manhattan, I got a bit more comfortable with things and was able to enjoy myself a lot more knowing where I was and how to get where I needed to be.

My possibly favorite part of the NYC "downtime" experience was the total anonymity. I feel like it's so damn crazy up there, you can do about anything you like (as long as you're parked legally!)  :P Walk into a coffee shop and just plug yer computer in, charge your camera... hell, don't even have to buy a thing if you don't want to, no one even notices you! Sleep in your car... hey there's a guy 5 blocks away sleepin on a bench, you've got it good!

So I still prefer the woods of course, the natural world is the real world for me, but that seemed to make my self-conqueration of the city feel even more special as I made my way around and learned some street smarts while I was at it. And Central Park saved my guts.  :P  Loved meeting every one of you guys during "up time," and it's true to say hanging out with everyone each night saved my guts too  :-* Just wish I coulda hung with most of ya more!
