I've been checking in on this forum pretty obsessively since the news broke earlier in the week, and am anxiously looking forward to tomorrow morning, and trying to get some tickets to the RCMH show. Over the past few days, I've come back to this thought several times: how excited must the band be? They've taken the time to write and record an(other) undoubtedly brilliant album, and 2008 will be spent supporting and sharing that creation with us, their fans. I can't think of a more exciting year!

Rolling Stone considers MMJ to be a "big band" and one of the "must see" sets of SXSW.

obviously, this is info we already knew, but for them to be considered a "big band" by the maintstream media's biggest music magazine...

so are the boys on the verge of stardom?

if so, do those of you who have heard the new album believe the new songs will push them over the edge into fame?
If you're lucky, MMJ will fill the void you didn't even know you ever had. If you're luckier, you'll get to see them live.

A better question may be: do we WANT them to reach that level of stardom?  They are definitely getting more prealbum hype than ever. and the way they sold out RCMH, opened for Dylan at Red Rocks, all things point to the boys reaching yet another level of the rock n roll pecking order.  Jim always said he just wanted to be able to make music for a living.  He's reached that goal, now how far is he going to push it?

The DARK

I don't know. I don't want them to be U2-level stars, but at the same time I want them to be remembered as "classic rock". But when it comes down to it, there is no other band that truly deserves to break big as much as this one. God knows they deserve it.

in a selfish way...i think most of us would not want them to reach super-stardom.  otherwise, there will be no more hometown solo Jim shows, standing room only venues, and all the things we love about them being a "mid-level" rock band.  however, i know we all want them to be really successful so they can continue to concentrate on making music and not have to worry about paying bills.

i think Jim probably has the ability to write "hit" songs, but does he want to?
