MMJ will be on the next Saturday Night Live episode :D
I think the commercial said may 10th
I think it's May 10th, can't wait!
I bet they play Highly Suspicious and I'm Amazed(I wish they play sec walkin' though)
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to go ahead and call Evil Urges & Highly Suspicious
I'm Amazed and Thank You Too
QuoteI'm Amazed and Thank You Too
speaking of thank you too I just heard it acoustic (with m ward) so beautiful .
Yes, can't freakin' wait!
Gonna go with Evil Urges and I'm Amazed.
QuoteYes, can't freakin' wait!

I can't see them doing Evil Urges because it's too long and I can't see them editing it down to 4 minutes. I'm Amazed works for me.
WHAT!?!?!?!
This is crazy. Looks like the boys have finally reached the next level with this new record. I always thought they would but I was having doubts when they didn't break through with It Still Moves followed by Z. Looks like the masterplan was a marathon not a sprint.
on another note, is it a little weird to anyone else that the performance is a full month before the record comes out? Maybe they'll move the release date up. That would REALLY be new for the band. :D
as far as songs, i'd like to see a new one and an old one. I know this is probably just wishful thinking from an old fan but I'd like to see I'm Amazed and One Big Holiday.
Anyone know who the host is that week?

I've been thinking that the timing of all this press is strange. They got a massive amount of press at SXSW and they're going to be on SNL next week. To me, it seems weird that this is all happening and the new record is still over a month away. I really hope (and am looking forward to how) they keep building this huge buzz they have right now. If they continue to get all this press, I could see the record debuting high on the billboard charts.
I think at this point it would be wise to get the record out as soon after the SNL performance as possible. That's going to be the peak of the hype and it will be fresh in people's minds if the record is released soon after. If I were ATO I would get this thing pressed ASAP and into stores ASAP to bank on all the hype and publicity.
Maybe they will end up pushing the release forward...
I doubt it. Isn't Radio City supposed to be kind of a release party? I don't think they would downplay the importance of that show.
QuoteI doubt it. Isn't Radio City supposed to be kind of a release party? I don't think they would downplay the importance of that show.
Hi...
I don't think the album will make much difference. By that I mean that it's release won't skyrocket MMJ. ( or maybe it will!) They seem to be well on their way, and they deserve it.
Remember Radio City SOLD OUT in 22 minutes!!!
These guys are the real deal LIVE. ::)
I never thought they'd make it on SNL, honestly. Although it seems SNL has taken a more indie approach lately. I am unsure of the timing, maybe the release date SHOULD be sooner. Having not payed attention to SNL too much lately, i would assume this current season is probably almost over and then MMJ would have to wait til next season.

Awesome!
QuoteI never thought they'd make it on SNL, honestly. Although it seems SNL has taken a more indie approach lately. .
They have taken a MUCH more indie approach lately. Other musical guests this year have included: Spoon, Vampire Weekend, and Panic at the Disco - I would argue that MMJ's fanbase is larger than all the fans of those three bands put together...
That could actually be a good episode.
Wow..i just got slight chills. This is going to be so huge for the Boys! remember that Arcade Fire SNL show where they gave thousands of viewers the chills AND THEN played an extra 3 or 4 songs for the Studio Audience? Im hoping the boys melt americas face!
i hope the band gets in a skit, too (in addition to the musical performance)
oh, and edit: i hope they play touch me i'm going to scream part 2. faces need to be melted.

I could easily see Jim James getting in on one...I vote for Highly Suspicious and I'm Amazed
It's almost like a mini play, or something, it's like a mini-skit almost and we tried to sound like angry british police officers.
Jim James talking about Highly Suspicious.
I think I know what one song is going to be. ;) Can you imagine though, this song being the first exposure to people that have never heard the band before. Hilarious! And total fitting for this wonderful band.
I do hope they get in a skit but I doubt it. However, you can almost guarantee they will appear in a few preview clips like they always do. Keep your eyes out. I'm thinking Thursday night comedies usually show two or three of those. Anyone remember?
I've always wanted them to make SNL. Not just because it would guarantee two live performances, but it just seems like the one network thing they havn't accomplished yet. Cheers to Jim, Tommy, Patrick, Carl and Bo! [smiley=beer.gif]
Awesome news.

If they play Highly Suspicious then they will have to follow with another song that shows america they're not a "joke" band. Im guessing Highly Suspicious and Gideon. Gideon is known to make jaws drop!
i could be wrong, but i can't see them playing Highly Suspicious (even though Jim has said he is tired of "rock sounds"). i don't think that is a good move to debut to a ton of new possible fans. they gotta go with an oldie, but a goodie (obvious choice is One Big Holiday) and something off the new record.
ya never know though....they always seem to surprise us!
OHH man! I have been waiting years for this! And that guy from the Transformers movie is hosting too..um, well sweet!
next stop Rolling Stone cover...c'mon Rolling Stone cover..
I'd go with One Big Holiday or Off the Record (the second half might not suit this occasion so well though) and Thank You Too.
i'll make my two guesses
thank you too
touch me part 2
i hope they stay away from highly suspicious only because it is not a good representation of what defines their music to me, and thus wouldn't be good for possible new fans. if they do decide to play an older song, OBH would be amazing.
I think there are a crowd of ways to look at it:
Something new and something old:
Highly Suspicious and One Big HolidayPeople are going to be blown away by the sound and intensity and comedy of HS, and then shown MMJ's most beloved song with OBH.
Or something new and something recent:
Highly Suspicious and Wordless Chorus (or something else from Z)
People are going to be blown away by the sound and intensity and comedy of HS, and then hear something more grounded, but signature MMJ, that's not five or six years old, but something the late bloomers might be familiar with.
Or something new and something new:
Highly Suspicious and Sec' Walkin'People are going to be blown away by the sound and intensity and comedy of HS, and then taken aback by (what reviewers are referring to as country) SW, showing off their range, which is why they are the best Rock n Roll band in the world...alive. All the while keeping it new, and not having to rely on older stuff.
The members of this board have been really active today.
I would love to hear a 5-6 minute version of Touch Me Part II but I don't think they could get away with the full eight minutes could they? Has anyone ever done 7-8 minutes? If I had my way it would be 8 minutes of Touch Me and an eleven minute Steam Engine. But that's just not gonna happen.

Awesome!
Nice! How did you get that pic so fast! I love how you can see the owl off to the right and the reflection of your guitar in the screen. Classic! My desktop this week. :)
Lets look at all the new songs:
Evil Urges- An excellent start for new fans, and the band loves it. The only problem is that it is a bit long.
Highly Suspicious- Depends. It would seem odd to play something this out of the box, but at the same time, it's short, funny, and rockin.
I'm Amazed- A top contender. All-around great song, excellent solo, catchy rhythm.
Thank You Too- Likely, but not certain by any means. If they get the means to use the strings like they said they had on the album version, than YES.
Sec Walkin- Unlikely. It's too mundane to really blow the crowd away on first listen.
Librarian- No. They need the whole band in on this.
Aluminum Park- Possible, and I see no reason why not, other than that the band doesn't seem to want to play it as much.
Smokin From Shootin- DO NOT RULE THIS OUT. It's got that classic rock feel that the crowd would love.
Touch Me Pt. 2- They'd need to cut this one down a lot. I'm not sure we're gonna get this one.
...and some older faves
Gideon- This would hit them right between the eyes. The most likely older song.
One Big Holiday- If they wanted to really get fans familiar with their sound. It's reachin a bit far back for SNL though...
Anytime- I don't see why not.
Wordless Chorus- The underdog here. They haven't played it on TV yet, so maybe if they're looking to break out of the box a bit...
Golden- Again, why not?
War Begun- Hey, a man can dream, can't he? ;)
OK, I've soaked it all in, and this is what I'm going with.
Song #1 I'm Amazed
Song #2 Highly Suspicious
I would love it if they somehow got Touch Me or Smokin' to work for song #1 but that's more of a wish than a prediction.
I don't think the band is going to be concerned about not representing the older sound. They always seem to be about moving forward anyway. HS will and should get played, as well as another new one......I'm with BH "I'm Amazed"
Well there ya have it. Two votes, case closed! ;D ;)
It really depends on what they want to do, from what I saw on recent SNL artists would play either two new songs, or one new and one old. For instance, when the Shins from about a year ago played something very recent- "Phantom Limb", and something from their first record- "New Slang". Spoon and Wilco both played two new songs. So, it's really up to the boys. I would go with I'm Amazed first off, and then something older second, probably Wordless or Anytime. The time alloted rules out a bunch of tunes, and I can't really see them cutting some songs down (ie Off the Record). I'm Amazed is the most listener-friendly of the new tunes, while Anytime or Wordless are both shorter, concise, and would go over well on national television.
May 10th is my birthday EFF YASS. :)
mine june 25th not necessarily mmj related but still awesome nonetheless.(PJ!!)
Billboard online reported they will be debuting "songs" off their new record, which implies the 2 songs will be from Evil Urges.
however, until May 10 we won't know for sure!
I just hope they do something utterly ridiculous while they have a captive live TV audience. The more stupider and provocative the better.
Yes, goofy outfits/costumes would be great, or at least an unexplainable sound a la Jim's chicken squawk on Letterman.
QuoteI just hope they do something utterly ridiculous while they have a captive live TV audience. The more stupider and provocative the better.
I know!! I can't wait to see what they come up with. Keeping with the Wild West cowboy theme, they could put a small fence around the stage and play amongst a punch of mini ponies and goats, an alpaca perhaps, when they cut to that shot of the band before they are about to play (and then go back to a commercial) they could all be brushing the animals.

;D I almost wish you hadn't posted this and instead mailed it to the band in an official letter of suggestion. This would be hilarious.
Ha, If they did it they would HAVE to play Evil Urges........and Highly Suspicious.

and a seal with a multi-colored beach ball and a monkey with a chihuahua on a leash and...
jim should hop on a horse and do his solo from Im Amazed while riding though the audience...really his only option at this point.
Anyone gonna try and go to the show???

& yeah I'm hoping 4 'Highly Suspicious' :)
This is the launch pad they really need for Evil Urges. I first caught the awesomeness that is MMJ during their Conan performance in '03, and they've been my favorite band ever since. Just imagine how many more legions they'll pick up with an SNL performance!
Already heard the SXSW performance -- 'Urges = genius. I absolutely cannot wait for June to get here.
Rock on, MMJ!
so does anyone want to change there decision now?
I think they should play "Good Intentions".........twice.
SNL put Wilco on a few weeks ago, their album came out last yr. and they're not releasing anything.

I bet the album release was already set and they landed SNL after the fact. SNL is a pretty big deal, but who knows when they got word they were playing it. It would be good timing to have that record out right after SNL because everyone is going to be running out to the record store the next day only to find out they have to wait another month, and by then they might forget about the band. Unfortunate timing, but no press is bad press.
I think they should definitely play "Evil Urges", to me that song sums up the changes the band is making and the new sound. Not to mention it's the first track on the album and the title track. I say definitely play 2 new ones, I don't wanna see a performance of a song I've already saw 15 times. I think I would shoot my TV if they played "One Big Holiday", or something off of Z. Don't get me wrong, I love those songs and albums, but c'mon, I wanna see the new shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there is no way they're going to be playing anything old. hype is good if they can rock the fucking house to the floor. just my opinion on that part of it.
remnants
smokin from shootin
who knows, I could see
evil urges
I'm amazed
being played too. who knows this should be interesting to see how they approach it.
They could play just about anything off the new album. Really.
true that
does anyone else think I'm Amazed could be the new closer?
I say, Go For It!! Rock Hard Twice.....
Highly Suspicious
Aluminum Park
Drop Jaws!!!
I was hoping they would be part of the main picture, but no.....

Don't forget to watch (or record) Thursday Must See TV for SNL commercials! You should be watching 30 Rock anyway. Two weeks in a row now they have been laugh out loud classics!
does anyone think there will be a secret NYC show? I had the privilege of receiving tickets to SNL.
I'm now guestimating:
Highly Suspicious
I'm Amazed
the commercials are gonna be wierd.
I'm Amazed is the single, I think it will definitely be played. The others are up in the air, frontrunners Evil Urges and Highly Suspicious.
::insert excitement::
Here comes me again with an unpopular opinion.
Let me re-hash the fact that this is all a fabulous marketing plan set in motion by ATO. I know everyone on this board wants to believe that the leak was unvoluntary and unplanned, but the way it's all playing out is a text book example of hype and hyperboly. We, as MMJ fanATICS, are only pawns in this scheme because we're already hooked. We ALREADY love this band and would walk the plank if Jim said to(well, not all of us but the majority). This major marketing plan is directed at the fringe fans of rock-n-roll. those folks who love good music but don't always know good music.
I know i'll be lambasted by many of you because you've already drank the cool-aid, but you who bitch about my views are naive if you think a BIG-BAD RECORD COMPANY hasn't taken these black market tactics into account when strategizing about the best ways to market music in these uncertain times in this industry.
Look, at least i didn't make the letters big and green. Apparently , that's construed as yelling and I ain't yeller.
Alright, well, since I'm Amazed is "the single" on iTunes it's safe to say they'll play that
If it's an old song, I'd assume OBH or Gideon. Off the Record would be a treat.
I think they will play only songs from the new album. In prior network appearances the promotional opportunity was not squandered on old material or cover tunes and I don't see this as any different.
So I think we'll see I'm Amazed and Evil Urges cut down to four minutes by ending it with the jam that occurs from 3:05 to 4:00 minute marks on the recorded version (listen to it and notice how that song could come to a natural conclusion right on the sustain that fades out from the 3:55 to 4:00 minute mark). The whole song only lasts just barely over five minutes and maybe SNL will need to fill out and let them play the entire song.
I'd put money on those two songs being played. If I was a gamblin' man. I think I'd prefer those as well.
If they don't play Evil Urges, I think "Two Halves" will likely be the second song as it is the most accessible (sounds like a Roy Obison b-side to me) or Aluminum Park just to keep the studio rocking but it's not as good as their earlier stadium rockers.
Lastly, they have yet to play a quiet song like "Sec Walkin" in these type slots, so I doubt we'll hear that one. But one can hope!

Quote

Make it Italian Sausage versus a Salami Sandwich and you're on. I don't care as much for salami. You got me hankerin for some State Fair food just as I'm leaving for lunch.

There is a little Italian grocery by my office that serves food for lunch. It is the greatest place for food in the entire world. Seriously. They make a Salsiccia Sandwich that is spectacular. It's smothered in Red Sauce, Onions, Peppers and Provel Cheese on French Bread. Will that do?

Can't we just celebrate our favorite band is gonna be on fuckin' Saturday Night Live?
Looks like I might need to makeshift some speakerwire for an antenna for this performance. lol. damn, it sucks not having cable anymore.
...if The Beatles can play Ed Sullivan than MMJ can play SNL w/o anything bad happening
my vote is Im Amazed and Evil Urges too. I think it is the perfect bridge of old sound to new sound for potential fans. I also think they will let them play both of them in their entirety, yes SNL has had a 3 week hiatus to come up with new material but lets face it 80% sucks every week and they will take quality filler if they can get it. I just hopey hope hope that Samberg and the gang will put our boys in a digital short. That would be so sweet pickles.
As for the purposeful leak of the album, I know they did. They know that most of the people that grabbed it are sueprfans and will buy the actual CD when it drops. I fo sho will.
This will be the first time to see MMj in HD! DIG IT!
http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/play.shtml?mea=248757
Thanks BH.
They should just blow everybodys minds with a ferocious performance of Remnants. 8-)
No, not this again.. you are right. I'll zip it but there are only 3 days left until SNL!!! Rather than addressing the marketing plan for this band for the 900th time, I'll say that I think that MMJ will play.....
I'm Amazed...
And then a cover... A smokin' rendition of "Money for Nothin'"...
I just hope that they don't rehash anything from Z. That always comes off as a cop out, playing your old songs. Those jokers from Panic @the Disco did that and although one of my childhood best friends played violin for them that night, It didn't bode well that they were supposed to be pomoting the new album but they played that "lock the goddamn door" song, again... from 3 years ago...
Weak.
Remnants would be awesome!! or Aluminum Park.. I don't care. I'm just fucking thrilled that the band is back and in the forefront again.
Are they saving Remnants? It seems like a perfect set-ender, much like Magheetah or Anytime or One Big Holiday. I can't wait for the big unveiling. Wouldn't Remnants be a perfect 2nd song on Saturday???
I'm going to Gringo Star(check em' out) on Saturday @ the Star Bar. Hello DVR!!!!!
just saw a commercial for snl saturday with MMJ was kinda shocking. all of a sudden they were just starring .
I saw one SNL commercial featuring MMJ. I laughed very hard at the grin Jim had on his face. He was also wearing a purple cape of some sort. They usually show 2 different promos. Did I miss the other one?
here is one

I'm fucking pumped for tonight. for some reason way more pumped than I usually am for snl
they should totally say fuck the time constraints.
1.) touch me I'm going to scream pt.1
2.) touch me I'm going to scream pt.2
that would be cool but it's gonna be i'm amazed and highly suspicious
Quote1. Evil Urges
2. Im Amazed
i second that.
i dont think america is ready for highly suspicious.
they better not puss out, I swear. if my face is anything less than melted I just don't know... kidding, i'm sure I'm amazed will be played for sure like you're all saying. prolly evil urges, they could pick something way more rockin than that if you ask me though. I'm excited for whatever.
I for one am going to be extremely dissapointed if they don't play Highly Suspicious. If they can't play that song on SNL than this world is much too serious for me.

I don't know what it is about that song, the begining gives me the friggin giggles ( like a little school girl :) ) ;D. I think it's the live version at sxsw. You can hear all the women yelling right before they start the song. And that beat kicks in.
I really hope they play it. 2 hours to go.
Time to start gettin my drink on :)
just saw a commercial of them playing.
he's rockin the cape. not bald
joints rolled ready to go. bring that shit mother fuckers
Is it really live ? I think they already played.
the show has a complete dress rehearsal. so they already played twice, and they'll do it again live.
Thanks :)
I think I saw norm mcdonald drop the f bomb once, and didn't martin lawerence(sp?) get banned from nbc for doing some crazy monologue he wasn't suppose to?
The only thing that will save tonight's non-laugh fest program will be the Jacket's performance.
During the break I saw a livenation commercial of them playing I'm amazed and advertising for the Chicago theater shows. :o
the dildo joke did nothing for me. These skits are pretty week so far, I hope I don't crash.... Not gonna happen.
this is horrid
Why would anyone think that we would care about a Suze Orman parody?
These skits are terrible. Someone get Jim out there and improv it. ;D
here it comes
:D
o.k. I think that I may be starting to get it. Wow!!
ahhhh! nice! thanks guys.
The rest is gravy, but I hope they rock it out even harder for song #2.
I was rocked...and I mean hard.
tornado warnings south of Nashville so no SNL, full weather coverage :'( :'(
what are the odds.
nice finish.

Bummer. There is some wicked weather out there, you still got interweb though.
a Solid Gold finish!
I really hope they play smokin' from shootin'. I'm going to try and mentally tell mmj to play it.
their minds are far too powerful for bluntmaster
I'm really starting to get it. That middle part live and expanded will kill me.
Who cares? That was a big smack upside SNL's bad comedy FACE!!!!
That breakdown...America has been converted (if anyone was still watching :-/)
Looks like Shia and Carl are best buds now. ;)
Did anyone see the faces of the string quartet during Evil Urges. Their fetus' were being rocked hard. They were loving it. They, along with the rest of viewing america, has seen the power of the jacket.
With SNLS recent record. I think the show was pretty good. The Italian interview skit had me busting out!
Since Evil Urges is on its way, i thinks its safe to say we have plenty more late night show appearances to look forward to. I wouldn't be surprised if they hit all of the big 3. Leno, Lett, and Conan. Yes, conan AGAIN!!
In order to watch this I had to get someone to stay for me at work, that's dedication!
I watched the show at work tonight (I'm woking until 7am), but I also recorded it on my HD-PVR (Personal Video Recorder, Canada's version of a DVR). I'm cranking the performance up tomorrow afternoon when I get up.
I wasn't crazy about that. Carl had a tough time on "I'm Amazed" They didn't seem like the were "In The Zone" if you will. I think it's difficult to play songs in that setting. It's not like a live show. They nailed that Conan performance of "OBH' though, so I'm not sure what was going on.
New member here. I have to say that I had never even heard of this band before hearing them on tonights (rather lame) SNL show. I live in Washington State, so as I write this, I have not heard their second song yet. I really liked their first song, so I googled My Morning Jacket and found this forum. I'm a 54 year old guitar player that used to play in a few bands (small time-local) way back in the middle to late 1970s. I've seen some great bands in my time, live (The Jimi Hendrix Experience; The Allman Brothers;Mountain;Black Sabbath ((original lineup))Wishbone Ash;Iron Butterfly;Marshall Tucker Band;Savoy Brown;Johnny Winter;John Mayall; The White Stripesetc). Just heard the second song, and liked it too.Mostly, I like blues and blues/rock stuff, but try to keep an open mind. I liked this band enough that I'm going to check out their cds.

Good Move! :)
The performances were good. That is such a tough setting to play, for a band like them. You cannot go out there and just rock the bells like they normally would. They sounded good and it should be a big boost for them.
The show was just fucking horrible. The only skit I found mildly funny was the Match Game spoof and that's because Match Game is the greatest. Oh and the little bit about GTA in Weekend update was funny.

Agreed. Now I know why I quit watching SNL. In fact, the show was so droll that it put me to sleep and I ended up only catching the last half of EU.
Can someone rip it? I missed it last night because I was downtown and drunk. :'(
I only saw song 2, but it was very enjoyable. Hurrah!
Wooo!

man, you say that about everything...

I've got a serious problem. I know. :-[
thanks to a tornado watch, I didn't get to see it.........
found it online yet Tracy?
I was able to see "I'm Amazed" which was great. We had a tornado outbreak in Alabama last night so the weather broke in before they performed EU. It was really depressing. If anyone finds a video would you please post? I don't ever even watch SNL anymore because it is sucks so bad, the one time I wait for months to watch it has to do this...sad day. Lookin forward to seein the boys at the ROO!!!
Yeah, when this ends up online, I'd love to see it. I couldn't justify sitting through SNL when I could be out with friends. ;-)

still looking. matter of time I guess
I'm Amazed was perfect! You couldnt fit anything better into a 5 min slot.
Evil Urges was also great. Both songs were exactly what SNL viewers needed.
It was okay.
SNL would have been amazing if they let the band improv a few skits. Just the band, without all of the terrible hacks.

wow, thanks mysterious idobi person.
I am so happy for these guys, I swear. My heart soars like a hawk! :) It's a long way from where they started, that's for sure, and no one deserves it more than MMJ.
(could have used a little more Patrick camera time. It's like, the world may seem at the brink of collapse, but I see Patrick banging it out and I feel just a little bit better about everything)
Thanks 4 the clips :)
The download versions of these vids look pretty decent in full screen. Its nice not to have to watch crappy YouTube versions. TYVM.
Thanks a lot for posting.

agreed.
Thanks to whoever posted the videos! I was outta town and not able to watch!
So GREAT! Now I am ready for the new album and tour. Wait, I was ready for that before, but even more ready now. Can't wait for them to be on Conan, Jay, Letterman, etc. Damn do I need some new VHS tapes or a TiVo or something.
Jim wore the purple cape during dress rehearsal. During the second song he stepped on it and almost lost his footing. He f-ed up a few chords, but saved the song. I guess he was told not to wear it during the live show.

how do you know this?
how did you see the dress rehearsal?
I think the audience gets to be there for the dress rehearsal. Apparently pingybrown was in da house! Awesome.
I got to see the live show. There is a different audience for each show. The person who hooked me up with tickets told me this story after we met up when the live show ended. I got to sit on the band side for the show which was sweet. You can hear my "WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" right as Shia says "jacket" when introducing the band before "I'm Amazed."
Surreal and awesome experience. Drove from Boston and back. Got pulled over by the fuzz for speeding on the way home. I wasn't driving thank god. My friend was going 93 in a 65. The cop dropped it to 75 mph and $100. Got home at 5:15 a.m.
It looked like the cape he wore Derby eve at Headliners. I wonder if it, along with his skull-boots, will be worn on the upcoming tour.

i was praying for mahgeetah
After watching the rerun last night, I noticed there was this really cool part during Evil Urges(or was it I'm Amazed?) where Bo and Jim are headbanging in synch with each other.

Johnnnnnnnnnnnnyboy!!!! im so glad they did SNL, if only to get the Yacster on board hahaha
I will always remember how they froze at the end of the songs until commercial break. Loved that.
