well i'm a hockey fan, and it's the playoffs and i'm rooting for montreal (but quietly because i don't want to jinx it) and my huz is rooting for his dallas stars and i'm a borderline colorado fan which makes our marriage rather tense right now...
anyone else interested in hockey playoffs?
any of our european posters watching their favourite players?
My team is the Pens, no playoffs for us. They sucked this year with the exception of Crosby. But just wait another year or two and watch out for the Pens they'll be good again. But hey who knows they might not stay in Pittsburgh if we don't get the new arena. Looks like that odds are we'll get it though.
Still like watching playoffs. though haven't caught a game yet. Must remember.
Big time hockey fan here Wellfleet. :), my Rangers are down 3 games to none from Jersey at the moment. :-/
I'm pulling for the Oilers and the Flames. I don't care which of these teams takes the Cup. I hate Ottawa, Detroit, New Jersey, New York (they'll be out tonight). I have no love or hate towards the Habs.

the Leafs have always been my fav hockey team, but alas no playoffs for them....
Go Canes!!!! :)
I'm going for Montreal. They dominated the canes for the first 2 games, and the first half of the third game. But then Saku got injured, no penalty was called, and the game changed momentum. Montreal missed their chance to put the canes away. Now I fear Carolina is going to take the series. Im still pissed when i think about Koivu, I've been cranky for 2 days straight because of that hit. Montreal's chances just went out the window.
OTTAWA BABY!!!!! were putting a serious spanking on the defending champs, even though they have had over 30 power plays, to ottawas roughly 13(which we have scored on about 7 of them!). so fucking stoked for this years playoff run. LEAFS SUCK ASS HAIR CLING-ONS!!!! long live the Oil and the Flames
it's so funny, us montrealers used to be so blase about playoff wins. first and second round success was a given. now it's a two-game win streak and everybody gets excited. but i miss it. i miss how the city transforms into this community of bleu-blanc-rouge (that's blue white red) and everyone lives and dies together.
the last playoff game i went to (a win over carolina, but 2 years ago) with my brother, leaving the arena the streets were flooded with happy, screaming people, hugging, whistling, honking car horns, waving huge Canadiens flags, faces painted... a greek dude high fives an italian dude who hugs an arab who slaps the back of a senegalese... it's amazing.
i took my husband to a leafs-habs saturday night game in montreal (only canadians know the significance of this) and he was just thrilled...
everyone is nicer to everyone else when the playoffs are going well in montreal...
:'( :'( :'( :'(
i miss home
:'( :'( :'( :'(
The Habs are done. No Koivu thanks to the ugly high stick to the eye, means Montreal are finished. Too bad. My favourite Euro.
fucking habs...
every year, EVERY YEAR since 1993 it's nothing but heartbreak and false promises.
the buzz out of montreal is that he may never play again. tough to play hockey when you don't have 100% eyesight... so sad. i remember watching the game against chicago a few years back when he was the leading scorer in the league and montreal was doing really well... gary suter (not a sutter!) took out saku's knee, torn ligament, bye bye saku for 3 months and he was never the same after that, he'd lost the extra step...
i hated that they made us wear full visors or cages in juniors, but i'm sure glad i can see with both eyes...
it's a long-running hockey joke...
it took players 50 years to start wearing helmets and only 2 periods to start wearing a cup...
Cages are better than visors in the sense that you can hear and see better - no fog and the enclosed feeling.
I'm pretty sure that they won't know about Koivu's eye until the swelling goes down. The early word is that the injury is similar to Sundin's from earlier this season. I hope for Sak's sake it is.
I don't think Saku has been the same since his cancer treatment. He's just as fast as he used to be, although he's well into his early 30's too.
Nice to see the Canes fight back to tie it up.....next game is sunday in Raleigh.I am trying to score some tickets.
i played goal, and fought our league long and hard to allow me to play with a cat's eye cage instead of the grid. you lose the puck sometimes. i was always partial to yellow visors, black on yellow is max visibility.
but on this carolina note, i feel like i need to go on record and say that hockey teams just don't belong south of, i dunno, pennsylvania. these carolina hockey fans... still looking for canes tickets on the 50-yard line. ;)
the people who go to stars' games, it's incredible. i've never seen so much fake boobage and bleached hair outside of, well, porn! they show up 10 minutes into the first, leave 10 minutes before game's end to avoid traffic. it's shameful!

America will never really embrace hockey. It's not part of their sporting culture - except in a few pockets like Minnesota or New England. I've long gotten over the need of trying to convince Americans to like hockey. I like seeing Jellyfish trying to score some tickets, but if I lived in Raleigh, I'd have season tickets. The Canes have one of the most dynamic young players in the game, plus the best American power-forward since John LeClair (although he's injured). Rod Brind'Amour and Mark Recchi have outside shots at making the Hall Of Fame too.
can i just say how much i LOVED john leclair? he was a hoss! built like a truck, not afraid of getting his nose broken, hard to the net... i think recchi has a better than average chance, too.
i don't know why more people here don't embrace hockey. it's fast-paced, exciting, with flashes of finesse and violence. it's the coolest game on ice don't ya know?
and man, i think colorado is about to piss away a 3-0 series lead and actually dump this series. theodore's been a total dog, and they've got no balls, no balls at all!
well, no worry about the gutless stars and their sieve-like tender, marty choke-o. they are done.
so, go OIL!
because if the stars must lose, then the only solace will be seeing detroit done as well...
Canes have won 3 in a row....... ;D
Canes have won 6 in a row....Go Canes!!!!!!! ;D
And who says we don't know nuttin bout that hockey down here! :P

Is there any TV coverage of the World Hockey Championships in the States? Canada played the US today in Latvia. Canada won 2-1 on a goal by Detroit Red Wings Brendan Shannahan. Rookie Penguins phenom Sidney Crosby scored the other Canuck goal.
BTW, the Worlds are an annual event always held in a European country. They are held around the same time as the NHL playoffs, so, the Canadian and US national teams (and the Russians and Czechs for the most part) are made up mostly of players from teams that didn't make the playoffs or got beat out in the first round. The Swedes and Finns often ice a team with half NHL'ers with the other half coming from their own countrys' pro leagues.
Oh yeah, go Canes against the Devils.
It's all about the Sharks, baby.
jaimoe... big fan of the world champs because lesser lights get a chance to play that wouldn't make the olympic roster, for instance... but my absolute favourite is the world junior championships. we don't celebrate christmas, so i celebrate the world juniors. it's a treat to see future NHL-ers before they go big.
Canes have won 7 playoff games in a row! Go Canes! ;D
D'oh. >:(
Sharks lost in triple overtime. Still up 2 games to 1 though.

The World Juniors are my favourite too.
Canes got blown out yesterday 5-1.....hopefully this takes some of the pressure of a win streak away from them and they can win today to advance.....playing in Rawley today.
I've got a big night of sports to watch (while I'm at work NOT watching my TV channels - which I'm paid to do).
Go Suns, Oilers and Canes. The Jays won big today too!!!
Canes dump the Devils! Yay! :)
Now it's time to slay the Sabres. ;D
Go Canes!!!!!!!
Canes beat Sabres 4-0 last night in game 4 to even up series 2-2.
LET'S GO CANES!!!!!
In Rawley NC tonight for game 5....LET'S GO CANES!!!!!. ;D
Let's Go Canes!!!!!!
Good gawd what a game that was last night...RBC Center was Rockin like a Hurricane!
4 more games to win the Stanley Cup.
QuoteIn Rawley NC tonight for game 5....LET'S GO CANES!!!!!. ;D
Rawley, or Raleigh??
GO CANES!!!
That first goal was so awesome. Bounced off one player, then another players skate, then in the goal! What a nice fluke!
Quote
Rawley, or Raleigh??
Sorry, took a few liberties with the spelling,it's Raleigh.
;)
I was pulling for the Sabres last night even though the Canes are loaded with Canadian players. Doug Weight calling the Sabres divers is the height of hypocrisy. Oh well, GO OILERS.
I think this will be a good and fast serious with tons of hits and hopefully not too many Canes dives.
Canes 5 Oilers 4...Game 1
I guess I am the last hockey fan left here.....great game last night...can't believe the fury that the Oilers played with early on...it really was sad to see their goalie get hurt.....specially since he was their go-to guy when it comes to goalies.Canes showed great stamina by hanging in there and making a comeback.
Anyways Canes up 1-0 in series...game 2 wed night in Rawley.
I would hardly call a goalie a "go-to guy" - scorers are labelled as such.
Roloson is irreplaceable, but their best skater is defenseman Chris Pronger. The Oil are in big trouble with two unproven back-up goalies left to pick up the load. A lot of hockey fans north of the Carolinas think the Oilers are finished after Roloson's injury. The next game will tell whether the team can rebound. In reality, they never should have blown a 3 goal lead.
The game was entertaining and Brind'Amour and Staal helped me maintain the #1 spot in my hockey pool, but I love the Oilers, so go Oil on Wednesday.
Never said they were finished,I ain't that cocky.
Game 2 tonight.
LET'S GO CANES!!!!!!!
Great game. The Hurricanes were the better team, but not on the scoresheet. Stillman hung Staal out to dry on the last pass. Can't wait for game six in Deadmonton.

Yeah....I actually thought Carolina looked a little tired in the last 2 periods......we still got 2 chances to win it.Glad we will not face elimination in "Deadmonton" (LOL) Sat night.
Well Jellyfish, it all comes down to tonight's Game 7. It may be as hot in Southern Ontario as it is in Carolina, but I still have Stanley Cup fever. Edmonton is now Canada's team - we tend to cheer for any Canadian team once "our" team gets beat out of the playoffs... unless that Canadian team is fucking Ottawa.
If Carolina wins, the Conn Smythe (playoff MVP) will go to goalie Cam Ward, beating out Cory Stillman and Rod Brind'Amour.
When Edmonton wins, the Conn Smythe will go to defenseman Chris Pronger, beating out Fernando Pisani (a breakthough season and playoffs) and defensive forward Mike Peca.
No matter in the scheme of things Canadian-wise. Carolina has the most Canadians in the league with Edmonton placing a close second. I can't hate Carolina for that. In fact, they also have two of my favourite Americans: Doug Weight and Erik Cole.
I hope for a great game regardless.
It was a great game and Edmonton deserves much credit for taking it to a game 7....they had our number the last few games....Canes needed to play at the top of their game monday night and they did.
Congrats to both teams for making it exciting...NHL needed that.

Don't buy into the media saying this was the most exciting series in recent memory. The media loves it when rule changes go their way. The Flames-Lightening series from 04 was just as good, as was most of the playoffs from the past 25 years.
Hey Jellyfish, will you be a hockey fan from this point on? Just curious. I hope you will. Rent the great Paul Newman movie Slap Shot and come back and talk to me.

I didn't say it was the most exciting...just that it was exciting and hockey needed that after the strike season....I remember the Flames/Ltg series well...and I will always be a hockey fan...have been since I was a yougun....Flyers fan at heart but since Hartford moved to Carolina,I have jumped on their bandwagon.
I'll try and check that movie out. ;)

Flyers eh? I've got an ex-Flyer (from the early 70's) going to my wedding in August... and even he can't stand Bobby Clarke. I hope Flyers captain Keith Primeau comes back. He's one of my favourite players.
