I'll be a lot happier when Wayne Rooney gets the A OK...

We'll see you in Cologne Easy(ily-beaten-by-England-on-the-20th)Morning Rebel ;) ;D
This is gonna be my home-thread for a while! Good move Dragonboy.
So because of my team (Belgium) is not there I'm gonna support Holland! Hup Holland Hup.
Is anyone actually going to a game in Germany? Patches?
Couldn't leave without this, it still makes me laugh out loud:
Football Commentator: Well, Ron Manager, once again the pace and the tempo of that first half totally dictated by the boy wonder, Ryan Giggs.
Ron Manager: Cor, Ryan Giggs, you know? Giggsy, isn't it? Mmm? Giggsy-wiggsy? Mmm? Oh! Ryan-y Giggsy-wiggsy. Isn't it? You know, marvellous.
Tommy: Is he the new George Best?
Ron Manager: Is George Best the old Ryan Giggs? But Giggsy-wiggsy. Precocious talent, isn't he? Mmm? Ooh, got it all, you know? Speed, acceleration, sweet left foot, all the tricks - the dummy, the drop of the shoulder, the shimmy, nutmeg, jiggery-pokery, hocus pocus, abracadabra, I wanna reach out and grab ya. Steve Miller Band? Spin Doctors? Ooh, very similar.
Football Commentator: Thank you, Ron. Now, Tommy, it's interesting to see the diamond formation being used again.
Ron Manager: Diamond formation? Does anyone really know what that is? I mean, at least you knew where you were with Alf Ramsey's wingless wonders. You know? 4-4-2, 4-2-4, 4-3-3...0898 654000, freephone double glazing?
Football Commentator: You've lost me there, Ron. Not sure about that particular formation. But, Tommy, do we need structure? Look at the Brazilians.
Ron Manager: Oh, those Brazilians, you know? Circa 1970? Broke the mould. Theory out the window. Free expression of football. Uncategorisable. Is that a word? It is now! You know? Far cry from small boys in the park, jumpers for goalposts. Rush goalie. Two at the back, three in the middle, four up front, one's gone home for his tea. Beans on toast? Possibly, don't quote me on that. Marvellous.
Nice one Mr. T!
I'll also be keeping an eye on the Japanese in Group F, stranger things have happened ;)
I've drawn Ukraine in the sweep at work :)
I'm starting to get excited :D

How does that work? Do you have to pick a team at random and then cheer for them? I don't think you'd pick ukraine voluntarily, despite their world-class striker.
I'm rooting for England. My pick for the winner is Argentina. Although they're in a tough first round and I'm also not sure if Lionel Messi is ready for the tournament.
i hope there´ll be a lot of matches like Portugal - England in 2004! ;)
i´m going to see Portugal - iran in the stadium!

You draw lots to get your team. Everybody puts in a bit of money and whoever wins gets the cash. So apart from your own team you've got another to cheer for.

Heh, you got a fun team. Much better than picking Brazil. That would be kinda boring. Although you would have a bigger chance at winning :)
I'll add a little support for you. Three cheers for Ukraine!

Well, may the best team win. It's going to be an interesting meeting, though.
Besides from Sweden I'm going to support Holland. I even have a Holland support T-shirt I'm going to wear during their games. Too bad I don't have a swedish one. Well, maybe it's more embarrassing really! YAY!
Sweden! I have a lot of sympathy for that team, although I don't know exactly why :)
They played a very good european championship two years ago if I remember well. And if Larson can take the winning mood from Barcelona (he played a great championsleague finale) to Sweden, Sweden might do some very good things!
Lots of talk about lots of crap teams whilst I was sleeping! ;)
Good to see we've got a buzz going....1 day to go!!!

I think they played pretty well in latest european championship, yes. Unless for the fact that they was beated by Holland in the quarter-final after penalties. Pity!
Larsson won't make us dissappionted in this World Cup. I'm pretty sure of that! =)

Bad news for France.
Djibril Cissé (Liverpool striker) is out for the world cup. He has broken his leg in the last preparation game "les blues" played against china.
They'll miss him for sure, he was playing very well... :-/

I was wondering that. It's great for us it's in Europe, as they're all at watchable times for us this time.
Opening Ceremony has begun! Und what is the first thing I see?
Lederhosen!
And the next thing?
Claudia Schiffer!

Just to say: The Germans have everything!
No Canada of course, but Toronto is Cup crazy. Toronto is the most ethnically diverse city in the world and of course, this breeds soccer fanaticism. I live in Greek Town, which is understandably quieter than it was two years ago after the Greek's European Championship victory. Little Italy will be hopping - we have nearly half a million Italians in the city. I'm sure Korea Town will be jumping this weekend too, amongst many other areas. Too bad China aren't in this year's WC. There's more Chinese than Italians in Toronto.
I'm turning on my fancy HD TV in a few minutes to watch, hopefully, CONCACAF representatives Costa Rica pull a huge upset over Germany.

I'm getting excited/nervous already. I remember last time hiding my face behind a cushion waiting for greggy to tell me whether Beckham havd scored a penalty.
England have been tipped to do well, even by Alan Hansen and Martin O'Neill, who said on telly that they hated admitting it. I've been enjoying watching Alan Shearer talking to Gary Lineker about it all. AS has recently retired from NUFC as you probably know and we miss him already.
Do you get English commentary dragonboy?

I might end up playing for them all. I joined a 'women only' sweep yesterday which hasn't been drawn yet. I'm also doing a staff v student penalty shootout in aid of cancer research (one of my own students has a brain tumour so I'm going to have a few kicks myself - he's doing really well at the moment :)).
It's a gorgeous day here, I'm occupying myself with a bit of gardening till kick off.
Very sorry to hear about your student :(
Looks like you've got you're teams covered - you can't lose!

I know what you mean. I lived in Bedford when Italy WON the World Cup. Imagine the noise in Little Italy :o
It's only every four years though :)
You can not top the singin and drumming from the fans at these games. Especially the South Americans. That Argentina game the other day. :o Some primal shit. World Cup on tv needs Surround Sound. Beautiful!
Kinda wish it would happen more often at a sports game here in NY. But I think we're stuck with 'We Will Rock You.' :-/

What's the time difference like for you TK? England's remaining 2 games in group B will be live at 1am & 4am here in Japan :-/
Ukraine two nil down after thirty minutes. Things are not looking good for doctor in the house!
Anyone else impressed by the Italians? They played excellent againts Ghana. More attacking than we're used too. Maybe the best team of the tournament so far?
Brazil on the other hand, was lame yesterday. They did not deserve three points. I wonder if the coach will start with Ronaldo the next game.

Italy was good against Ghana, but what I'm seeing from Spain is very impressive. That 4th goal was wonderfuly excecuted.
And Ronaldo must have been the laziest brazilian player on the pitch, he hardly moved. Wich was actually fun to look at. :D
Did anyone see Brazil v. Croatia yesterday? It was pretty tight.

And such a scary match really!
Also, I was really impressed by Spain's play yesterday against Tunisia. I think they can go very far in this tournament. Though I want Czech Republic to win.
England v Sweden tonight. I hope it goes well on and off the pitch. There was some trouble in Cologne last night - a very small minority fighting. It's been so friendly so far - and much of the credit for that has to go to the German authorities who've handled things brilliantly. Fingers crossed that the headlines are about the footie tomorrow.
That is such a shame...
Because things have been so good so far I had almost forgotten about the hooligan element.
Let's hope there's no trouble tonight ( 4am this end :-/ ) & that England win!!!
You staying up for it A?
If Germany wins against Ecuador (it's 3-0 now), and thus wins his group, England must win tonight (or this morning ;) ) if it wants to avoid Germany in the next round.
I recommand England to do so ;)
no, england has to lose the next match and beat germany in the next round! :)
Quoteno, england has to lose the next match and beat germany in the next round! :)
You're not particulary fond of your home team arent'you Patches? I'm not a German fan neither, but I liked the way they played in the first round. Much more offensive than they're used to.
Don't know if England are good enough yet to beat the home team.
England and Sweden are through. The English still not entirely convincing, pretty shakey in the second half. And Owen's injury looked quite serious, hope he's doing allright. Great goal by Cole of course, he's playing great.
Cole's goal was great. A real shame about Owen. I wouldn't be surprised if he's out for the tournament. Real problems in defence though :-/
Yeah, it looked pretty bad, I wouldn be surprised if he'd be out for a couple of weeks or even months. Let's hope not. Ecuador is up next, they should be beatable, but there will be troubles from then on.
QuoteYou staying up for it A?
No, first England game I've missed. 4am was too late to stay up for & too early to get up for.

sounds like brazil just won.
Brazil came close to playing some reel samba-football. That's promising for the next round...

hhhhmmmm, I think I smell a new thread.

There's been too much of that. I hate it too. I wonder of the time will come when referees can look at video footage before making decisions. It would spoil the flow though but sometimes the ref penalises a player then the playback shows the other player to be clearly diving. >:(

How could you with one striker isolated up front. How can you play so defensively when you have enough talent to dominate? I don't understand that mentality. Thats why Brazil lost too. And selecting Walcott and then not giving him a change to play was a pretty surreal move as well.

it was kind of nice though because i could kind of understand. ;)
so what are we now, france and italy?
holy moly. i should go away this weekend. ;)
Italy!
but i dislike both teams!
Yer, I'm not fussed either way...Italy I guess? :-/
fuck...the result should be: portugal - germany 3:1 and not 1:3
Italy...
whoa did you see Zidane??? :o

Yay Italy--at least it wasn't the French!
hey is it just me or does the 2006 FIFA logo look like a bunch of Skittles on crack visiting Emoticon Village:

P.S. this was supposed to be the logo but i guess there was a squabble:
