Title: College Football!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: sweatboard on Aug 31, 2006, 02:29 PM
Oh GLORIOUS DAY!!!!!!! College Football once again.  It is FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE folks.  This is the thread where we share our love for the game and talk shit about each others programs.  So, I'll start off by saying my friend brought up a good point...........He says if you are a betting man take Vandy and the points, they are like a 27 point underdog to Michigan.  He may have a point there.  Also, I'm a TN Volunteer fan anyone have any predictions on thier game against CAL this weekend?

In the meantime, feel free to watch this video of "The Catch".

OSU is preseason number one!!!! We're goin wire to wire undefeated this season!  Last year we only lost to national champion Texas and we kicked Notre Dame's ass on the final day of the season.  This season's going to be fun!

I also double-dip as a Louisville fan.  I think they're great and Petrino is a great coach but with West Virgina and Miami so soon in their schedule I'm not so optimistic.

I went to MIZZOU and they let me down almost every year.  I have always been jealous of SEC football.  Those are some events!

I'm a huge college football fan! I'm a huge Michigan fan, born and bred GO BLUE! Sweat I dont know if I would take that bet I think Michigan is gonna surprise some people this year. Michigan has a huge chip on their shoulder from last year, Lloyd Carr's job on the line and the players love him so I am optimisticly hoping for big things this year. Please not to much hating on me aMD seeing as OSU has owned our asses in the Sweater Vest Era ;). I'm very curious to see how OSU will fare this year considering losing 9 starters on D. I think this is gonna be one the best years for college football in a long long time, there's not really a complete team, the whole Top 10 each team has some question marks.  I think we will have a BCS mess at the end of the with several one loss teams and maybe even no undefeated. WVU has the best shot to go undefeated, playing in the weak ass Big Least.

Awesome man!  I loved my time there.  I really wished I could find a job after school there because I really really like that town.  Not many engineering jobs to chose from so I moved back home to St. Louis/St. Charles.  I still go there all the time to visit for football/basketball games.  It's only about 90 minutes away.

It's a great journalism school.  People come from all over the country for the journalism school.  It's kind of what the school is known for.  I would be glad to talk to you more about it at anytime.  Obviously, I can't compare it to other schools, because this is the only place I went, but I loved it, the town, the atmosphere, everything.

Another thing people don't realize about Missouri, is there are areas that are not just flat cornfields.  The Columbia area has really great parks, caves, bike trails, hiking trails, etc.

I wasn't directly involved with the greek life but there is plenty of that if your son is interested.  (I just took advantage of the mass quantities of liquor they served for free, and stayed away from the hazing! ;))

I guess, most importantly, if he's serious about journalism, you can't find a better school.  Or so I'm told.

Tracy, you should alert the Ole Miss staff that they should avoid drug testing Shaffer at all costs.  Also, he has been known to carry around an aluminum bat on campus so alert the student body NOT to fuck with him.  If he can avoid being kicked off the team he could actually help your program.  Good Luck Ole Miss!!!!

I am with you on that, I asked myself in the middle of the game who I was rooting for. I think Bowden has grown on me over the years, so it was FSU, but I can't honestly say I would root for either team, unless they were playing Notre Dame or Auburn.

That was a great game last night, and besides a couple of stupid late hits on FSU, a pretty clean game. Seems like the thug mentality has cooled a bit.

Oh, it's a million (billion?) dollar business.  Some of the big time schools actually get 100,000+ spectators at a game!  Along with TV money, this is a big time income for the schools and there are plenty of problems that go along with it.  Anyway, this could be an entire topic in itself.  Sometimes I think the connection to a college team is stronger than a pro team because the graduates actually feel like they are part of the "team".  B.S.?  Yes.  Entertaining as hell?  Definately.

So... Alabama pretty much whipped Arkansas ass in the stats game, only to lose in overtime because, for some god damned reason - our coach kept our fucking cock-eyed field goal kicker in the game to miss FOUR consecutive shots. Four missed kicks is fucking ridiculous.

I'd like to know why our backup kicker wasn't put in.

Well, I only saw a small bit of the 3rd quarter and all of the 4th, but the game shouldn't have even gone to OT. We should have made that Field goal with a few minutes left.
Tiffin has been successful so far, but he just choked yesterday for some reason.
Also, we only have 2 placekickers and Christensen is still nursing an injury from what I understand, so there wasn't anyone else to kick.

HOW MANY SEC STUDENTS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB?

At VANDERBILT: it takes two, one to change the bulb and one more to

At GEORGIA: it takes two, one to change the bulb and one to phone an

At FLORIDA: it takes four, one to screw in the bulb and three to
figure out how to get stoned off the old one.

At ALABAMA: it takes five, one to change it, two to reminisce about
how The Bear would have done it, and one to throw the old bulb at an
NCAA investigator and one to throw the other old bulb at Fulmer.

At OLE MISS: it takes six, one to change it, two to mix the drinks and
three to find the perfect J. Crew outfit to wear for the occasion.

At LSU: it takes seven, and each one gets credit for five semester
 hours.

At KENTUCKY: it takes eight, one to screw it in and seven to discuss
how much brighter it seems to shine during basketball season.

At TENNESSEE: it takes ten, two to figure out how to screw it in, two
to buy an orange lampshade, and six to phone a radio call-in show and
talk about how much they hate Alabama.

At MISSISSIPPI STATE: it takes fifteen, one to screw in the bulb, two
to buy the Skoal, and twelve to yell, "GO TO HELL, OLE MISS".

At AUBURN: it takes one hundred, one to change it, forty-nine to talk
about how they did it better than at Bama, and fifty to get drunk and
 roll Toomer's Corner when finished.

At SOUTH CAROLINA: it takes 80,000, one to screw it in and 79,999 to
discuss how this finally will be the year that they have a decent
 football team.

At ARKANSAS: None. There is no electricity in Arkansas.

OSU has won 9 out of the last 10 Iowa games.  Iowa is usually good but never as good as the buckeyes.  I know Iowa is getting a lot of hype but they can't get past OSU.  That said, they probably have the best chance of upsetting the buckeyes until the michigan game.

Purdue is still undefeated as well and should knock off Notre Dame on their way to Columbus.  The Big Ten is tuff this year (that's right t-u-f-f tuff!)

Alabama beat Tennessee's ass just enough to get them to shut the fuck up, and that's almost good enough for me... UA lost, but for our own mistakes (and that seems to be the story of Alabama's life for way too long) - not for UT dominance.

Can't believe that team was ranked #7... muhahah.

So, on another note... I heard that there were a couple of coaches interested in signing for Alabama, if the UA was to get rid of the current coach. Does anyone think the UA would buy out his contract for 4 million after just having extended it this year? I don't think so. He'd have to get caught by the right people barhopping and flirting with students.

Personally, I was fucking pissed when I saw them extend his contract... it just didn't make sense to me that anyone would extend the contract of a coach who wasn't winning the important games. I don't think firing him would be much more than a quick fix - but something has got to give, soon. For most Alabama fans, anything less than an SEC Championship is a losing season... I can't even imagine the profanity that'll be used to describe THIS season.

...which, by the way, most people are saying will be 7 and 5.

I dont think they will fire him, even if he loses every game the rest of this season (except Florida International). Several years ago so much of Bama's trouble came from the instability in coaching and the NCAA penalties. We finally have a coach that has stuck with this team, but something has gotta give soon. Our defense has been great but the offense leaves something to be desired. Dave Rader has been put in a bad position and I think he may be replaced even though Shula calls the plays.

As a neutral party who picked UT to win  31-9, I'd still do the same. UT was like 2-7 in the red zone. Ainge played terrible. Bama just isn't that good and UT could not have played much worse. The better team won, but should have scored at least 17 more points.

I think he's done a good job with the recruiting. It's a re-building year for us because we lost so much of our defense last year. But we have some young'uns that are starting to step up and make themselves known. I like seeing that.
I really think Shula's big problem is the play-calling. On 9 plays from scrimmage, Darby had all of 7 yards up the middle. Johns consistently gained yards on the plays that he ran. Think something needed to be changed there?

Oklahoma beating Mizzou helped the Longhorns strength of schedule since we may not play mizzou this year.

Texas has four come from behind victories the past four games. A win is a win. USC lost. Ohio State or Michigan will at least lose one game since the will play each other soon.

Now we just need West Virginia to lose, and then we might have an argument to back into the MNC game.

At what point will the "powers that be" admit that college football needs a playoff system? What will it take?

Funny how basketball, baseball, hockey and NFL/Div 1 and 2 football all have a playoff system, but the good ol' boys of NCAA football refuse to step up.

I mean, can you imagine the first round match-ups  (that would actually mean something other than winning the Pfizer/Hardees Ass-Clown Bowl and all the cash that goes with it)?

Ohio State v Auburn
Michigan v Texas
Tennesse v USC
Notre Dame v Louisville
Florida v West Virginia
Rutgers v Boise St.
Ole Miss v California

It would be during the holidays so no school would be missed (as if that really matters considering all the other sports do it) and the games would be HUGE! It would be a blast for absolutely everyone involved, hands down, period, forget about it!

It's a sham (and a scam) that it's decided by big money.
Title: Re: College Football!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: JohnnyRage on Oct 29, 2006, 12:01 PM
Having just a 16 team playoff would add a solid month of games to the college football season. You would still have the same amount of bitching and moaning with teams at the cusp of the cutoff point.

College football conferences are asymetric. Some have a championship game, some do not. Some have 8 teams, some have 11. Some have two divisions, some do not. Some conferences are power conferences, some are mid-major, some are considered minor, some teams are not even in a conference. Who get's preferenctial treatment, who does not?

You would have to shorten the current college football season (which to some become too long). Which games would you cut? Already, most power conferences are too large for every team to face every other team. Or would you eleminate out of conference games. Which could result in less of some of the traditional and unexpected match ups: USC vs. Notre Dame, UT vs Ohio St., Power Conf. vs Power Conf., regional out of conference games.

Also to suggest a complete drop of the college bowl system, in my oppinion is to not understand the history and tradition of what made college football great: The stadiums, the traveling of fanbases, redemption of a season, every single game of the season having incredible impact including the final one.

However, I agree that there are too many bowls, and that the system is far from desirable. But a system needs to be in place that reduces the number of bowl games but preserves the importance of making it to a bowl and having your fan base desire to witness it in person. Plus incorporate an 8 or 4 (basically a plus one game) team playoff system into the bowls (most likely the current bcs bowls: rose, sugar, fiesta, orange).

But you still arrive at the same problem of how do you decide on which 8 teams would qualify. Which is a bigger problem than the current one of which 2 teams qualify.
Title: Re: College Football!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: ycartrob on Oct 29, 2006, 12:18 PM
Funny how all the  other major college sports put up with the bitching and moaning. Plus, it makes more sense for, lets say Auburn 2 years ago to bitch and moan b/c they went undefeated and finished #2 as opposed to a team with 1 or 2 losses not being invited to the playoffs. I'd much rather have a playoff where a #12 with 2 losses is crying rather than an undefeated team sitting there looking in from the outside. Can you imagine computers picking 2 teams from the NFL to play in the Super Bowl every year? I can't.

As for non-conference games? I would dare say 90% of those games are against lesser foes and are on the schedule for wins. There are exceptions, but overall, non-conference games are a joke.

And the conference championship game (and the divison of conferences) was created for the sole purpose to make more money, so you could 86 that. Cut that and a non-coference bum rush (ie  Arkansas St, Buffalo, Miami-OH, Florida Int'l, Sam Houston, etc...) and there's room.

Every other sport does it and the only reason football doesn't is b/c of money. Until they figure out how to make a playoff system profitable (for all the old money) then the bowls stay in place. Trust me, these folks will forget "traditions" when they figure out the $$ part. Plus, you just keep the bowls and use them in playoff format.

This has little to do with history, tradition, parity, fairness, etc....this is about the bottom line: MONEY. Keeping the good ol' boys greased.
Title: Re: College Football!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: JohnnyRage on Oct 29, 2006, 12:55 PM
College football is not the NFL and the supebowl. Thank God.

Then with out a conference champ. game how would you decide which teams enter the playoffs, like the big 10, errr 11, where a team that didn't even play the number two team in the conference moves on?

QuotePlus, you just keep the bowls and use them in playoff format.

Which is what I said.

How large would you like your playoff system to be? How would you decide on which teams enter?
Title: Re: College Football!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote
How large would you like your playoff system to be? How would you decide on which teams enter?

that's a great question. Off the top of my head I say 16, just b/c it makes sense. Right now with the BCS, this is who you would have:

1. Ohio State vs 16. Wisconsin
2. Michigan vs 15. Boston College
3. West Virginia vs 14. Boise State
4. Florida vs  13. Arkansas
5. Louisville vs 12. Rutgers
6. Auburn vs  11. Tennessee
7. Texas vs  10. California
8. USC vs  9. Notre Dame

then these crybabies on the outside get the Charmin/Burger King/Samsonite Butt Munch Bowl, some cash, and plenty of Kleenex:

17. LSU
18. Oklahoma
19. Clemson
20. Georgia Tech
21. Texas A&M
22. Oregon
23. Washington State
24. Wake Forest
25. Virginia Tech

Hey LSU? You want to make the playoffs? Then don't lose to Auburn and Florida. Oklahoma? Want to make the playoffs? Keep your star QB away from boosters, beat Texas, and grab some Kleenex after the replay debacle at Oregon.

It was totally unfair to tell Auburn 2 years ago, "Hey, great job going undefeated, but you're #2". Apalling. (and trust me, I  HATE Auburn).

A playoff settles it on the field. That's why March Madness is my favorite time of the year. 65 teams and it's on! You're #66? So sad, here's the NIT.

It's only a matter of time until we have an NCAA football playoff. And in 20 years, when it's the greatest sporting event ever, people will have a hard time remembering why we never had it in the first place.
Title: Re: College Football!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: JohnnyRage on Oct 29, 2006, 11:28 PM
It was also disgusting when Nebraska lost their final game of the season to Colorado, didn't play Texas in the Conference Championship game, and somehow backed into the MNC game where they got their butts kicked.

So you want to trash the BCS, but you still want to use the BCS rankings to decide your playoff matchups ;)

Also, I know you just used the current (last week) rankings to produce your matchups, but did you notice that you had...

Mich vs Wis (Big Ten Rematch)
Florida vs Ark (Both SEC teams, possible rematch)
USC vs Notre Dame (Rematch)

Personally, I just think things would just be too complicated, too drawn out, too unnecessary, too far away from college football with anything more than a 4 or 8 team playoff.

Besides, it's usually pretty obvious that there are only 1,2, sometimes 3, maybe 4 dominant teams in the country per year.

The matchups that you listed do occur. It's called Bowl Season. And like I said, I agree that things aren't perfect. They could be better, but there's not a need for a large playoff post-season.

That and...

ps  Fans and families will be unable to travel to four bowl consecutive bowl/playoff games making it difficult to sell out bowl/playoffs and less regional revenue (hotels, restaraunts, etc) unless you play the games in some flexible mid-regional location (between the two teams) or home playoff games (no bowls).
Title: Re: College Football!!!!!!!!!!!!

right about those match-ups happening in bowls. But what would mean more (and be 10x more exciting), winner of Texas/California goes on to play winner of Florida/Arkansas and then on to possible national championship or winner of Texas/California goes on to be crowned Champion of the Zippity-Do-Dah bowl, some big cash pay out, and a season end ranking?

QuoteI personally don't think there is a need for a large playoff post-season.

Why football? Why is Division 1 football the only major sport (pro or college) without a playoff system? Everyone else has it wrong?

Good grief, it's a scam.

Alabama did a good show, no matter what the circumstances were coming into the game. That onsides kick that Alabama pulled off was beautiful, and the airtime those passes were getting were equally magnificient. To have just lost to Mississippi State been robbed at home, the Tide was pretty impressive against the supposed #1 defense in the NCAA.

This week has proven to be a week of upsets, Alabama losing to LSU included. On the bright side, it was a good game and I enjoyed it... and let's be real, I'm so glad Georgia pwned Auburn.

YEA!

See, as the season goes on, it becomes more obvious as to who is going to get their asses handed to them.

i'm a totally neutral college football fan (hell, i don't think i even watched an entire college football game before this year), but the system is fucked.  i don't like michigan; i don't like ohio state, and i live an hour away from columbus.  bottom line, michigan and ohio state, based upon their seasons, are the 2 best teams and should play each other again.  it seems every year the playoff format gains more momentum, so here's to it actually happening very soon.

The SEC is simply just the most dominant conference in the nation. Ohio St. has not seen such speed and strength.

I'd love to see Florida play Bosie St. in the Plus 1 game, but if there was a playoff system, we'd probably have Florida/LSU match-up. Just glad we didn't have to endure another lackluster defensvie performance in a Ohio St/Michigan re-match.
Title: Re: College Football!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: sweatboard on Jan 09, 2007, 12:03 AM
Nice, I just don't unerstand why Tn got dominated so physically in thier game.  It was humiliating.  The fact of the matter is the biggest difference in Tn in the last five years is THEY ARE SOFT now.  We lost all our toughness somewhere along the way.  We are much better coached and we execute much better this year but we still look so weak on the lines of scrimmage.  Fulmer USED to pride himself on dominating the line of scrimmage.

OSU looked pretty sluggish coming off 52 days of rest.  Maybe they would have been at game speed if they had been playing tournament games in Dec! Anyways, congrats to the national champions: Boise State.  Really, we NEED a tourney here folks.  I'll bet the BCS still ranks OSU higher than Flordia.  They have only lost one and it was a quality loss to Flordia, who to say OSU isn't still the national champion? if we're going to base the best teams on schedules and stats and not on a tourney or wins and losses then it seems that OSU is the logical choice for national champion. Who can make a better case?

It's just a way to keep the so called big schools on top and the so called small schools under them.  Imagine a playoff system where Boise St. would have played Ohio State for the championship...would that not rock the house?  No other organized sport operates this way...not even NCAA basketball, they have a fuckin' playoff every March!  Gonzaga has an even chance of whoopin' Duke for the national title every year...not UCLA playing UMass every damn year for the title.

No wonder I don't watch it.  The playoffs for baseball, football, hockey, basketball (all pro) are all exciting every year.  This business of "oh sorry, the coaches/writers poll says Team A is the "best" and they get to play Team B for the "championship" is so lame.

Boooooooooo!

QuoteAlabama basically beat Florida... so when Florida beats Ohio State's whimpy ass, it'll pretty much backup everything I've been saying since Day One...

Alabama is the National Champion, again.

You heard it here first, folks.

QuoteOSU looked pretty sluggish coming off 52 days of rest.

That was not a quality loss, that was an ass whipping.  The only loss Florida had was to a legit Auburn team.  And I wouldn't really say that they have been playing in tourney games in Dec.  They played one game the first week of Dec.  I'm not even a Florida fan, in fact I'm a Florida State fan  :'(  but there isn't really a case to make for Ohio State.  Sorry. At least they have good gymnastics...

I don't think you got what I was saying.  I was saying that OSU would have been better off playing tourney games in Dec rather than sitting at home for 52 days(I wasn't saying they were playing tourney games, just the opposite, obivuosly, the Big Ten doesn't even have a championship game which is why they had such a long lay off).  Also, the term "quality loss" refers to how good the team you lost to is, which means OSU's loss to Flordia bodes them more BCS points than Flordia's loss to Auburn's.  If you want to go by margain of victory OSU holds a clear advantage over Flordia since they wiped out everyone they played other than Flordia.  Of course this is all nonsense that we wouldn't even be talking about if they were a tournament, which was my original point.  Get it now?

Oh and OSU's basketball team is currently ranked number five in the nation and the football team was runner-up for the national championship.  So how's FSU's gymnastics team?

That's a sorry excuse.

And you've pretty much said, in masked terms, exactly what SEC fans have been saying for a while.

THE BUCKEYES WERE EXACTLY WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!

You root for Alabama, right?  So what sorry excuse do you have for your team?  And by "THE BUCKEYES WERE EXACTLY WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!" do you mean the second best team in the nation or s team that is WAY better than Alabama?

What are you talking about? What excuses are needed? We practically pwned everyone.

No, that wasn't what I meant. Not at all... 2nd best in the Nation? No way... More like... 5th, tops. That's being nice about it, too.

Do I really have to go and name all of the teams that would make love inside OSU?

no, don't worry about it.  You obviously don't know what you're talking about when it comes to college football.  All I know is no one would think about firing Jim Tressell after this season.

Let me just guess the teams you think were better than OSU: Flordia, Tennesse, LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, Mississippi State, and Oklahoma State. Those are all the teams that made love inside of Alabama this year. They did have big wins against Duke and Louisiana-Monroe, though.  I can't believe I'm actually giving credence to your crazy assertions by responding to them.

Oh, man, I love it. Ohio State got exposed for the frauds they are... by Florida, nonetheless, a team that people were saying didn't even deserve to be in the game in the first place... and the best you've got is throwing MY team's record at me?

;D

How about LSU vs. Ohio State?

:D

How about Georgia, Auburn, or Arkansas?

;D

I have to disagree with this assertion you're making aMD. When you lose to Mississippi State, you're getting fucked; there's no making love at all there. You're totally getting fucked.
