I'm off to visit my parents at their new house in Spain for the first time this Sunday. My wife can't make it so I'm meeting her in Paris for a few days on the way back.
Man, I love to travel (who doesn't?)
I love Hawaii! I've been there 4 times now both to Oahu & Maui. I've also been to Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Guam, America, France, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, The Czech Republic (Prague is fav city) The Netherlands & Belgium.
I'd like to visit South America, I'd really love to see Machu Picchu.
Oh yer, I've also been to Japan ;)
What's your fav country/holiday destination? Where would you like to visit? Share your travel stories etc
I want to visit Japan, Ireland and Scotland.
Some of my recent favourtie places so far have been Mississippi, Quebec City, Nova Scotia, The Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, Charlottetown Prince Edward Island, Cape Enrage New Brunswick.
My favourite place in the world: Red Pine Lake in Ontario (my uncle owns an island in the Muskokas, a region of a 100,000 lakes in the northern tip of Southern Ontario).
my bestest friend had a cabin in muskoka and it was great for fishing and stuff. being a city girl, all the quiet and clean air and peace really freaked me out.
i love the amalfi coast of italy, positano, dreamy...
i will recommend montreal to anyone and everyone
california, what can i say, it's intoxicating, and not just the pollution in L.A. if you can surf and ski in the same state, i'm in!
israel and egypt (the calm areas) to dig into real history
i've never been to hawaii but it's been my dream destination forever. while waiting for my green card, i can't travel outside the US, so HI would be ideal. maybe for our belated honeymoon...
very interested in Oz and southeast asia but asian people really seem to dislike me, i don't know why.
Jaimoe, let me know if you ever do plan to come to Japan, hopefully I'll still be here & can help you out somehow.
Wellfleet, you HAVE to go to Hawaii. Check out this rental that we stayed at for a few days as part of our Honeymoon:

Make sure you check out the pic of the waterfall, this was in our backgarden!

Can I ask, what makes you think Asian people dislike you?

I'm planning a Japan trip in the next 18 months to two years. Thanks for the offer. My best friend lives in Japan and is an editor for the Asahi News. My first cousin has lived in Japan for almost 15 years too.
dragon... it's just this weird feeling i get when i go to sushi bars or chinese/korean/thai/vietnamese restaurants. i feel like i get dirty looks from the waitstaff. maybe it's just me being nuts, or just waiters who hate everybody (like i did)...
i am as nice and respectful as i can possibly be. i don't act obnoxious or ask stupid questions or say "saki to me". i say edamame, and unagi and use the proper terminology and etiquette. i don't ask for more ginger. i always say thank you and leave a big tip, and for some reason i feel the sushi chef wants to drive that knife into my heart because i am a filthy white girl. and it's even more stupid because i had tons of asian friends (mostly chinese) in school.
OMG those cottages are gorgeous, and the prices are so reasonable. thanks for that, we're saving up for a couple's vacation/honeymoon we didn't get to enjoy after the wedding. i love it that they provide fresh coffee beans. hawaiian coffee is divine... aaawww... now i wanna go really bad... :P

Looks like you're sorted! :)
Where do your friend & cousin live? Do you think you'll be able to get to Kyoto?
Kyoto is my fav city in Japan, so many amazing temples, so much history.
I've never been out of the southeast U.S. (Unless you count my birthplace of Anchorage...which I don't remember any of). I'm way jealous of ya'lls traveling exploits.
I'm hoping to have enough money saved up when I graduate to go on a month long Europe expedition...so we'll see :)

My friend is a Japanese Canadian and he married a Japanese woman 6 years ago. They live in Tokyo with their two kids who probably could claim dual citizenship. He wants to move back to Canada but his wife's English isn't "confident" enough - and I think you know exactly what I mean in a Japanese context.
My cousin has lived in Kyoto teaching English to businesses for nearly 15 years. He wants to leave Japan too, but he's lived in that cultural vacuum for almost too long and is having trouble relating to North American society, especially the rapid evolution and diversity of our education system and workforce.
i'm jealous too - i haven't been outside of australia yet... saving up for a holiday mid-year in either queensland or fiji (mmmm sitting on a beach for a week sounds gooood) and then a proper europe trip probably next year. there are so many places i want to see, its going to be hard narrowing it down!! i've got family in england & holland, and a friend near New York, so maybe i'll start with those three places!!
it's very typical of australians to go overseas before seeing our own country too - i've never been north of sydney, never been to the outback or uluru... one of these days! :)
ali... just know that some of us, namely me, are awed by the fact that to you, fiji is right next door. how beautiful... i'm terrified of flying and know that when we finally make a trip down under i'm going to need a lot of valium.
ive been to canada once. my great uncle has a lodge in armstrong, about 150 miles from thunder bay, which is out in the middle of fucking nowhere. the entire drive from thunder bay to there we saw one train and one car. anyway its an 8 cabin lodge resort on out a peninsula on caribou lake which i think it s a 25 mile long lake. its pure secluded wilderness paradise. i was only 10 when i went, so im long overdue in going back.
other than that, the wife and i honeymooned and visited parts of mississippi and lousiana a few years ago. we drove all the way out to grand isle which was an experience all its own. it was the first time id seen the ocean, and even then, it was only the gulf which i consider to be cheating a bit.
last april we took the kids out to new mexico for a week, and i fucking loved it. i dont think i could live there at all, but the scenery is fucking great. we drove to the top of la sandia which overlooks albuquerque, i think the elevation is 10,768 (3283m) and thats the highest ive ever been. we stayed in T or C most of the trip and took advantage of the mineral springs there, theyre spectacular! we took one day to drive over to the gila cliff dwellings, id recommend that for anyone interested in native american history.
this year, travelling is a low priority due to finances. were planning to explore northern ohio along lake erie since ive only been up in that area one time before.
i´ve already been to: autria, switzerland, belgium, netherlands, france, monaco, luxembourg, czech rep., denmark, andorra, spain, italy, portugal, usa and canada.
i loved canda. beautiful country. i travel almost every year to portugal. love it, too.
Quotei loved canda. beautiful country.
man, i was just coming home and was heading down yonge street and these dudes shouted "canada fucking sucks. i hate canada." it was hilarious. i think they were too cold or something. ;)
i haven't done a whole lot of travelling, but when i do get away, i am so happy for it. i've been to most of canada, a fair amount of the us, england, ireland and scotland.
i really want to do mainland europe, and i think if somebody said that i could go wherever i wanted to, i would choose japan.
for the ninjas.
when i was in canada we drove with a car to Florida--->NYC---->Toronto
that was a nice trip. but i´d like to travel to alaska or iceland.
i am going to europe in june!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
nice. where are you going to?
only 3 more days! 8)
I'm heading to France in May for my sister's wedding. I'll be there for 12 days.
I'll be in Cuba in August - staying in a 5 star hotel in Havana for 3 days, then off to a Sandals resort in Varadero for 4 days. I'm planning on heading to my best freind's cottage this summer on Eagle Lake in Eastern Ontario, just north of the beautiful city of Kingston.
i am very excited about going to my dad's farm for easter. that's like a little break. and then aaaaaaalabama. and nashville.
sorry, i know you all know that. i'm just really really looking forward to gettin' outta here. :)

I'm going in July. I am so excited! I am going to England, France, Italy, and Germany. I can't wait. ;D
i haven't totally organised it yet (only decided on monday) but i'm going to a friend's wedding in italy at the end of june, so i think i'll be going to england (probably only be able to do a little bit in the south-east), then off to germany (berlin), check out switzerland (the eiger!!) and then italy (verona, florence, rome!). its a complete flying visit, but hopefully i should be able to pack a fair bit in 3 weeks!!!
i'm going home at easter (seriously can't wait to have some time off work) so will probably be eating large amounts of chocolate, and doing some hiking!
Quoteonly 3 more days!
til what?
hey elizanne, how long are you planning on spending in each place you go to? anything particular you want to see?
:)
I am going to London first, and spending a week there. Then in France, I am spending a week in Paris, and 3 nights in Nice. We are going to be in Paris for my cousin's 23rd birthday and Bastille day! Italy is next with 1 night in Lucca, 5 nights in Rome, 2 nights in Sorrento, 3 nights in Florence, and 2 nights in Venice. Then for the last part of the trip I am going to Munich, Germany for 5 nights.
This is a family vacation, and everybody had places in mind that they wanted to see. I really wanted to go to Greece, and my brother wanted to go to Ireland, but unfortunately we had to cut them out to make room for places other family members wanted to go.
There is so much to see! I am kind of going with the flow, when it comes to my family, but there are a few places that I really want to see. In France I want to go to Giverny and see Monet's gardens. I also want to see Sainte Chapelle. It was my favorite chapel that I studied in an art history class years ago. The stained glass windows are amazing. I can't wait to see it in person. I am also excited about going to Pompeii in Italy. I think for the most part though, we will be hitting all of the main tourist attractions on our trip.
Where are you going ali?
sounds like you have a great holiday planned!! i'm going by myself, so if i can pretty much go wherever. maybe next time i'll have a travel-buddy, but this time's solo.
i've started putting together a rough list of places:
london - generally all the great buildings - st. pauls, tate modern, british museum, vic & bert museum, tower of london, the beehive.. if i get time i want to go to kent (where my dad was born & my g'parents lived) and the isle of wight (where about 400 years of my family lived)
berlin - the reichstag, the jewish museum, potsdamer platz...
zurich or basel - lots & lots of great swiss architecture...
plus if i get to the alps, particularly grindelwald, i want to see the eiger...
and finally:
italy - verona - to see my favourite building, the castelvecchio, which is a 13th century military fortress (built on roman ruins) that was converted to a beautiful art gallery in the '60s by my favourite architect
- florence - duomo of florence (brunilleschi's dome), the uffizi...
- pisa - leaning tower & other great 16th & 17th c buildings
- rome - the forum, the pantheon, sistene chapel... pretty much anything i can lay eyes on really!!
pompeii, vesuvius & naples would be great, but i have to see how far the travel-fund stretches. i'll probably end up doing some of the tourist attractions, but mostly its going to be my own select architecture tour of europe! :)
eek did i get a bit carried away? :-[ well.. sorry! i'm still on a bit of a high just on the thought of travel, so who knows how i'll be when i actually get there!! a screaming mess probably!
i think the main thing i'm looking forward to seeing is the castelvecchio (sad to say, but i am an architect, so i'm allowed to be a building-nut!) and probably seeing the places my dad's always told me about. seeing where my family comes from is going to be pretty cool
ali, you are going to have an amazing trip! I know what you mean about being high on the thought of travel; I feel the same way. I can't stop thinking or talking about my trip. I have been reading travel books, and watching videos like crazy! I am so excited about my trip that I even get a little teary eyed when I look at pictures of some of the places I will be going. It's silly, I know, but I can't' help it. :)
As for favorite vacation spot, I would probably pick Goa, India. It is beautiful anytime you go...great tropical weather, beaches, and food! I lived in Asia and Europe for about 6 years for work so I have so many favorite places for different reasons. But I'm back in the good old U.S. of A! Other spots I love:
1. Mauritius
2. Singapore
3. Ukraine
4. UK
5. France

I took my wife on a tour of Italy for our honeymoon (ten years ago). Seeing the history right in front of my eyes made me question a lot about our existence.
At the Uffizi, seeing the statue of David shook me to the core. I'm no artist but that was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen.

I made sure to get to Pompeii while we were there. One of my favorite bands is Pink Floyd and I LOVE their concert movie "Live at Pompeii". Wow, just wow.

Dragonboy! Where you at son? How was your trip?
Hey TK!
Been back about a week now, real busy with work but I've still been reading all the posts & keeping up to date on all the news.
Spain was amazing, cheers for asking.
I was blown away by my parents new house. It's big, beautiful & right in the middle of nowhere.
The surrounding area is SO peaceful, nothing but olive & orange trees. The weather was perfect & we spent a lot of time in the pool.
The nearby village was lovely & the local coastal resort lots of fun. Great food, cheap beer (San Miguel) etc.
The only reason it wasn't perfect was because my wife couldn't make it due to work comitments.
Still, I met her in Paris for 5 days on the way home, which was fantastic. I love Paris & have been lots of times but this was the first with my wife.
I'll get some pictures up as soon as I can work out how to use my new digital camera.
Hope everyone here is doing OK! :)
welcome back dragonboy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you've been missed.
i think your parents should adopt me (and my husband). i am very handy in the kitchen and my husband is very well suited for yardwork. ok, make it happen! :D
some day, i plan to escape to something beautiful like northern italy and buy fresh basil at the market and say si, normale! some day...
you should post some photos...
Great dragonboy! Spain and Paris. Ni-ice!!! San Miguel's are tasty. :)

YAY!
off to london tonight - see ya all in about 4 weeks......
:-*
Take care & have a great time Ali!
& let us know all about it when you get back :)
I just got back from France. I had a great time. Drank lots of blanc vin (sec) et beaucoup pints of Kronenberg 1664. Oh yeah, I spent six days in Paris, one in Tours, another in Biarritz and one Avignon. The French people were really friendly and the food was pretty good too. The history and architecture is overwhelming and I love the compactness of the towns and cities. Ugly urban-sprawl has not infested France yet.
I can't really speak French, but being Canadian helps since we're at least familiar and comfortable around the language. It also helps if english tourists ask the "right" questions, especially: "Parlez-vous anglais". Some Parisians get their nose out of joint if you assume they speak english before asking if they do first.
Hey Ali, welcome back!!!
How was your trip?
hey! thanks! i had an absolutely amazing time.... busy downloading the photos (i took over 2000) so i might sort out a few to show you all... everywhere i went was having a heat wave (in england it was really a "heat wave" - between 27 - 30 degrees, so not that stinking hot!! my rellies were all not coping with the heat, but i thought it was great)

Just got back from Hawaii yesterday.
Needless to say we had an excellent trip. We went whale watching for the first time & were lucky enough to see quite a few whales. The most amazing thing was a mother teaching her calf to breach. The mother jumped once & the calf just went crazy, leaping out of the water over & over again.
One of the most amazing experiences of my life!
For those afraid to travel to Toronto in the winter (i.e. Americans from the South and Europeans), this is certainly the winter to come here. Right now it's 10 Celcius and it won't be getting any colder until the middle of the month. No snow and mainly sunny skys for January. Yes, the world is fucked.

i really don't want to get into this at all, that much, and i'm really not trying to be controversial.
i'm just sayin'
i don't think that there's anything we can do about global warming... so why not enjoy it? we've dug ourself a hole that we can't get out of, unfortuantely.
as for me, i love this seventy degree winter thing... it was so warm out today... :-/ plus, by the time the icebergs melt and the earth drowns and all that stuff happens, we'll probably be on mars and we'll probably be on the moon...
and i'll probably be dead. and you too. sorry. insensitive? realistic!
but maybe this isn't a bad thing. maybe we'll start producing people who can breathe under water AND on land. WITH GILLS! w'ell be FISH PEOPLE! ahahhahha. and it'll be SO much better than regular ol' earth earth.
we'll be WATER EARTH.
but -
what i was thinkin' is that i like the way they're putting loads and loads of money in to this civilization on the moon thing - if they can start buildign atmospheres, maybe they'll begin to protect ours.
or maybe they'll find new things. or maybe new things will evolve into us. or maybe it's a scam put out by the governnmetn to protect the government by gettinng less trust and ultimately getting everyoen on the side of the weak! and really there's no such thing!
i have no scientific evidence of anything. i dont' even really know at all what the fuck global warming is, except that it wasn't snowing on christmas.
in the mean time, i'm down with shorts in the winter.
on a different note - one time, when i was reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally stoned, i came up with this theory... that people miscalculated the days, and the leap years and the moons... and realyl it's not 365.25... tha'ts too perfect! it's a little less than that... so each year, we are subconscioulsy adding a day, and not really realizing it...
basically, sicne the leap year is off, and since we miscalculated, it's actually gotten warmer in the winter (errm... the nov. dec. jan. feb. months) and it'll eventually get colder in teh "summer" (the june/july.augsust) and there'll be no spring or fall. just hot summer and cold winter. or hot winter and cold summer. rahter.
hahahhahah
ahhahahha
ah.
i just reread this.
i'm not crazy.

:D
i believe in global warming in the fact the world is heating up, things are warmer than they've been in quite some time. however, if you study scientific literature, you'll find that the earth has gone through numerous periods of cooling and warming, long before any human was on this planet. like i said, i can't and won't argue the fact that temperatures are rising, etc etc etc, but i don't think society is as much to blame. approximately 3 million years ago, the earth was 25 degress Celsius warmer than it is now. there were no human-related activities to cause such a thing.
just think about this: think of all the major, bulbous, huge, fantastic forces that had to take place to create mountain ranges, rivers, oceans, etc etc, and ask yourself why do most people seem to think the earth is done changing in really massive ways? in my opinion, i think that's what we're going through now. the upcoming solar maximum is predicted to be the strongest in over 400 years. the magnetic poles are something like 500,000 years overdue for switching places. why can't some of these forces be responsible for the crazy weather around the world? even if you don't agree, it's worth checking out, but then again thinking everything might be truly out of our control might scare people even more...
Don't get me started on global warming...
My favorite foreign country is SPAIN, though while I was there I didn't get a chance to make it to Seville, which is on the top of my must get to list. Spain rocks so hard!
The last major trip I took was my honeymoon, to French Polynesia (islands of Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora). Without a doubt the most relaxing 2 weeks of my life.
I'd love to spend a couple months touring South America, never been. I want to fish for trout in some of the huge rivers pouring out of the Andes into Argentina. Great wine made down there too.
All around favorite vacation: that's an easy one, and it's not too far away for me either...the Sierra backcountry. Emigrant Wilderness, Hoover Wilderness, Yosemite High Country, Ansel Adams Wilderness, Kings Canyon...so much to explore, so little time!!!
i went to turkey, once.

We're off to Kyoto for the weekend tomorrow.
For those of you who don't know Kyoto is one of Japan's oldest cities & a former capital, famous for 100s of beautiful temples.
We've both been many times before but this will be our first time together + it's cherry blossom season so it should be lots of fun!
For anyone interested here are a few of the temples we hope to visit:
Ginkakuji (Silver Temple):

I will try to post a few pics when we get back but we still can't seem to install our camera's software into our PC :-/
I think I seen that place in one of the 3 Ninja's movies. 8-)
