There's a bunch of free services - I think the Yahoo league manager deal thing is free.  We'd have to do the draft on-line in a chat room or something.  With the season perhaps concluding during the middle of a potential tour the losers could all agree to equally share the cost of quality tix to the show closest to the winner.  Just a thought.

tiki's overrated, much like eli was when he was picked number.  People are coming around to see that he's not all that he's cracked up to be.  How can so-called experts with their jobs on the line tell anyone to not only pass up phillip rivers and ben rothlisberger but trade two draft picks away to do so?  (with those two picks they got shawn merian and nick kaeding).  result: years of success for the chargers and years of turmoil for the giants. that will go down as the worst trade in nfl history

Damn, you're right, Finn is on IR. He gets a first down every time he touches the ball... which is only like 10 times a season haha.

Hopefully Jacobs can continue to improve. He did well the 2nd half of last season.

Although overall I'm not really looking forward to this season. :-/

It will ruin your life - but in a odd, happy sort-of way.  I'd prefer Friday because I'm at work, but I realise that most might have other eyes peering over their shoulders to make sure that there is some form of productivity going on at the workplace.  I should be able to swing the Saturday though.

sweet, well that's three out of four that can swing saturday.  i can't really get to a computer at work.  i don't think my principal would like me giving my 3rd graders busy work so that I could draft my fantasy football team. actually, how long will this take, because my break is at 3:00-3:35 and then we dismiss at 3:50 so if it starts at 3:00 eastern time I may be able to swing it.

Tripps, thanks for setting this up!  I guess you're The Jacket?

They are usually significantly more than 30 minutes.  And I don't mean any offense by this but with some never doing it before it'll make it even longer.

Depending on the timing of your pick you could potentially leave for 20 minutes and it still wouldn't be your turn when you came back.  Also, some sites do an automatic pick you could choose that option while you're gone and it will automatically pick the highest rated guy (or girl if you want anyone from Houston) that's left.  Just a couple options...

alright already. you're probably right, we ought to keep the real and fantasy discussions seperate.

I have to tell ya, I'm not encouraged by cincy's preseason games so far.  defense is a huge deal again.  especially depth on defense.  We've got a LOT of good players and potential to have a great season but we've got to stay healthy and have some people step up on d.

anyone check out that hbo show about kansas city chiefs preseason?  very cool!

QuoteWho DEY think they gonna beat dem bengals!?!?!

New Orleans 27, Cincinnati 19

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Drew Brees needed only six on-target passes to show that he's ready -- and the Cincinnati Bengals' defense isn't.

Brees led New Orleans to a touchdown in his only series Saturday night, completing every throw he made and giving the Bengals a half-dozen more reasons to worry in the Saints' 27-19 preseason victory.

The NFL's leading passer last season, Brees had his way with the league's worst pass defense, one that Cincinnati put a lot of moves and money into trying to upgrade in the offseason. The early returns aren't good.

"Obviously, I'm not happy with how we performed, how we played tonight," glum coach Marvin Lewis said.

The Saints (1-2) scored on their first three drives against Cincinnati's starting unit. Brees was 6-for-6 for 55 yards on the opening drive, which culminated in Deuce McAllister's 8-yard run and the first round of boos from fans who had seen this so many times.

The Saints were only getting started on a night that left them feeling good.

New Orleans returns most of the team that lost to Chicago in the NFC championship game. There are a few things that need to be settled -- a No. 3 receiver, role-sharing at a few spots on defense. All those things can get decided in the next two weeks before the opener.

The most encouraging thing is the way Brees is playing. A year ago, he was coming off a shoulder injury that limited him during training camp and left the Saints unsure what to expect.

"He's been practicing real well," coach Sean Payton said. "He's worked hard on all the little things in his game, and he's playing with a lot of confidence. I'm encouraged about where he's at compared to where he was last year at this time. He has a good feel for what we're doing."

In the last two games, Brees has gone 18-for-20 for 173 yards.

"I'm getting excited about the beginning of the season," Brees said. "Preseason does serve a purpose. The last two times, we've looked good."

The Bengals (0-2) have a lot of work to do.

They let safety Kevin Kaesviharn leave as a free agent and released linebacker Brian Simmons in the offseason as part of their defensive overhaul. Both signed with the Saints and played in backup roles on Saturday.

Cincinnati's new-look defense looked a lot like the old one, giving up two touchdowns and a field goal on the Saints' first three possessions. Reggie Bush had a 6-yard touchdown run.

On the Saints' first drive, they didn't even face a third down.

"Again, I go back to that first series," Lewis said. "We want to get off the football field. We had an opportunity to set the tempo."

Shayne Graham kicked four field goals in the first half -- another bad sign for Cincinnati, which couldn't even get into the end zone after recovering a fumble at New Orleans' 3.

Carson Palmer played four series and was a pedestrian 5-for-10 for 41 yards with a sack and fumble that set up the Saints' second touchdown.

"It wasn't what we expected or want to do," Palmer said.

The most glaring problem was the lack of a No. 3 receiver. The Bengals were reminded how much they miss Chris Henry, who is suspended for the first eight games for violating the NFL's conduct policy.

The Bengals tried to get the ball to Tab Perry, who is first in line to take Henry's spot. Palmer overthrew him three times -- once when he got open at the goal line -- and backup quarterback Doug Johnson had trouble connecting with him, too.

Perry was the intended receiver on eight passes in the first half, but had only one catch for seven yards. He also had a false start on the opening drive of the second half. Perry finished with two catches for 19 yards.

"I'm new at this deal," Perry said. "T.J. (Houshmandzadeh) and Chad (Johnson) and Carson have good timing. They're on the same page, and I'm trying to get there."

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves, here. this is the preseason.  i'll concede that the saints can beat the bengals with doug johnson at QB all day long.

it's the preseason!!!  Let's not forget what happened the last time these teams meet in the regular season, less than a year ago.  carson palmer diced up you're stellar defense.

as for the shit you highlighted.  i assure you that cincy's problem is NOT wide receivers. chad johnson has been the best receiver in football the last four season.  TJ would be a number one in NO.  Chris Henry would be the two, even though we may only have them half the season.  who's you're number three again?

also, cincy did not have the league's worst defense as the article says.  They gave up the most yards but they also were one of the best teams in the NFL in takeaways.  And they only gave up 9 more points than NO's defense last season.  I'm not going to say cincy's defense is great but I'm not going to let a saints fan talk smack about defense either.

Saints turned the ball over 4 times, it had very little to do with Carson Palmer. The Saints had a bad game on their way to the NFC championship game, no biggie. The Bungles took advantage of the Saints miscues, on their way to 8-8 (which was great, considering they were really more like a 7-9 or 6-10 team) and a nice comfortable seat on the couch with a perfect view of all the rounds of the NFL playoffs. But just for fun, let's check out Brees' stats from last year's Bungles game:

D. Brees  37/52 510yards  (595 total yards and 29 first downs!!  lol  :D  )
C. Palmer?  14/22 275 yards  ( 385 total yards and 15 first downs)

Who's defense got dice up? Wow! Nearly 600 yards in total offense. Now, if that had been against a good defense, then that would really be something...

but who won the game? the bengals have a bend don't break defense that doesn't look good on paper but wins games, like in the case of the saints game last year.  Look at it the other way.  your offense produces nearly 600 yeards in offense and can't produce a W? sorry, tracy, you really can't talk shit win you lose.

Not talking shit at all, the Saints had a bad game (anyone who knows anything about football knows the better team lost). Once a season a team can lose b/c of turnovers, all the while manhandling the other team. It's why they play 16 games, the cream rises to the top and the pretemders stay home. I'd say the fan who is talking smack about beating a team who was 1 win away from going to the Super Bowl while their team didn't make the playoffs is the one talking shit. Talking smack about winning a regular season game against a better team, when your team doesn't make the playoffs, is loser talk. You should be proud of the 8-8 Bungles; proud that they could pull off an upset of a better team.

Too bad the NFL doesn't have a 1 game season, huh?

haha. yeah, the bengals haven't had an arrest as a team in over a year.  and odell thurman is getting the shaft from the league because they don't want to reinstate him during the whole michael vick fiasco.  He was suspended for a year, did nothing but the right things during that time and the league denies his reinstatement?  now THAT'S criminal.

btw, i guess you all heard vick's going to plead guilty.  i hope he gets over a year in the clink!  atlanta should have a hell of a year. i kind of feel bad for patrino (their new coach), but he needed a new QB anyway, this may just give him an excuse for having a "rebuilding" year.

There's a slight chance that I'm going to the Titans/Colts game in a few weeks. If so, it'll be my first NFL game. Should be fun.

i think what will happen in the future, is that nfl network will be on standard cable. they have these thursday night games, just too piss people off. the people complain to their cable providers to get the nfl network. once the nfl network gets picked up by the cable provider, they make a shit ton of money. its really smart of the nfl network to do this, but for now it sucks for the fans.

Simmons' post on ESPN today about sleepers was interesting...

Texans, Raiders could have big years out of nowhere.
He's not jumping on the Niners or Lions bandwagons.

But, the Ewing-Theory testing in Atlanta should be something else.  They have good RBs, decent defense, Harrington in a dome, fairly easy schedule...could be a big year for the ATL.

We will see.

Excellent local news coverage of the concert on the Circle. Hinder just left the stage and Clarkson is up next. So far the best outfit they have shown is a lady dressed up like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz Colts style holding a sign that reads "There is no place like Dome." Complete with basket and stuffed Toto that she has already cleared through security to get in.  Thank God the Colts are getting some crazies, it seems like for so many years it was just a bunch of blue haired old ladies clutching pom-poms. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but give me some variety would ya'.

some of you youngsters may not remember, but the Colts used to play in Baltimore (they actually moved out of Baltimore to Indy in the middle of the night in 84), and thus a pure form of trash talking is to refer to Indy as Baltimore (the same as calling the Tennessee Titans the Oilers, the Arizona Cardinals as St. Louis, the St. Louis Rams as Los Angeles, the Ravens are the Browns...).

balls deep it they best way to get all up in the endzone... i think??
Anyone remember a Monday night game four or five years ago....Jerry Rice was on the Raiders, someone was interviewing him before the game, live, and he says, "Yeah, we just need to take em balls deep tonight."  Sent it back to Al Michaels who was stunned at the time.  Amazing TV.

This division gets more fun every year. Honestly, i like that teams like the bengals have improved enough to give steelers more of a challenge.
AMD, we can talk some shit but lets be more respectable. No calling Pittsburgh Shittsburgh, thats disrespecting to the whole city, not just the team.

i don't know if i can promise that.  see i don't just hate your shitty team, i hate your shitty city too.  so shittsburgh just fits so perfect.  i'll try to keep it civil, but this is football, I love talking smack, and I know the shittsburgh stuff gets under your skin, so it's gonna be difficult to hold back in the heat of the battle.  :-/

You can also do this in baseball, the New York Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers, Milwaukee Braves, or the California Angels of America, for example.

;D
Why all the hate?  Not everyone on the thread is a "youngster" who according to you, has no memory of the Colts leaving Baltimore and moving to Indianapolis.  Do you hate the INDIANAPOLIS Colts so much because you had a personal investment and lost money or what? As a season ticket holder in 1984, I can say Indianapolis was thrilled to get a National Football team, and as a fan, we didn't ask the Irsay's to move in the middle of the night, we were just glad they brought the team to INDY.
The Colts fans were thrilled to back the winning Superbowl team! (And we didn't steal the game from ANYONE in the middle of the night)!  I know there is great rivalry amongst football fans, but does there have to be so much hatred?
It seems like the comments you made about the Colts really stirred up a lot of shit on the thread and for what reason?  You must like to see people angry or else you're just plain bitter.
I'm a true-blue Colt's fan, but I would never discount the Saint's abilities and especially Drew Brees, who came to the NFL and SAINTS through a good homegrown Indiana college football program.
The Colt's deservedly won the Superbowl and without a doubt, smoked the pants off the Saint's Thursday night.  Sorry for all of your hate and angry feelings.  Too bad you can't find it within yourself to congratulate the fans of the INDIANAPOLIS COLT'S
like a gentleman instead of acting like a disgruntled SAINT'S fan who really is putting his own team down if he keeps talking about how bad the Colt's are and yet the Saint's were beaten by the "Dolt's"
Try to smile and think good thoughts!!!!  Maybe it will help the Saint's in the coming season.    :)  8-) :-*

i got this at work today, and thought some of y'all might find this interesting.

----------------------------
By Mariel Concepcion, Billboard

SOURCE: Billboard.biz

In a first-time promotional initiative, sports network ESPN has teamed up with numerous record labels to preview new music during the network's Monday Night Football and Monday Night Countdown broadcasts. Starting tonight, snippets from artists such as Kanye West and Foo Fighters will be featured prior to commercial breaks and during the halftime show.

"Last year on October 23rd, a month before the release of Jay-Z's 'Kingdom Come' album, we showed the video for his single 'Show Me What You Got' during half time. Soon after, we decided to start an initiative where we would promote new music before album releases during MNF," explains ESPN director of communications Bill Hofheimer. "Our idea was to get fresh new music out there whether hip-hop, pop or country," adds ESPN music director Kevin Wilson.

Slated for the coming weeks are West's "Stronger" and "Good Life" (Sept. 10, Baltimore Ravens vs. Cincinnati Bengals); Foo Fighters "The Pretenders" and "Come Alive" (Sept. 24, Tennessee Titans vs. New Orleans Saints); Matchbox Twenty's "How Far We've Come" and "I'll Believe You When" (Oct. 1, New England Patriots vs. Cincinnati Bengals); and Kid Rock's "So Hot" and "Rock N Roll Jesus" (Oct. 8, Dallas Cowboys vs. Buffalo Bills).

Two songs from Eddie Vedder's new solo record and soundtrack to the Sean Penn-directed movie of the same name, "Into The Wild," titled "Rise" and "Hard Sun," have recently been confirmed (Sept. 17 Redskins vs. Philadelphia Eagles game) as have "Just Can't Get New Orleans Out Of My Mind" by Irma Thomas and Marcia Ball, and "When The Saints Go Marching In" by Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The latter tracks, from "Goin' Hoe: A Tribute To Fats Domino" (Vanguard Records), benefiting the Tipitina Foundation, will be included in the Sept. 24 game.

Last year, Monday Night Football on ESPN averaged more than 12 million viewers per game and became cable's most viewed series in TV history according to ESPN reps.

it's brett's last season.  i am crossing my fingers.

are you crossing your fingers that it's his last season?  I would if I were a pack fan.  He's really doing nothing but ruining his legacy and preventing his team from rebuilding and moving forward by holding on so long.

people in Wisconsin are such homers when it comes to football. brett is king and vince is god. its weird like that.

It is weird like that, but WHAT is a homer?  I am laughing so hard my neighbors must think i lost it.  hahaha.  In Wisconsin folks are a bit Favre crazy.  He's bigger than cheese and miller's lites in hunting cans (yep, bright orange...anyone seen those?).

no, i meant, people up here are crossing their fingers that Brett doesn't suck ass like he did last year.  I do love Favre, but it is time to retire.  Let some new people play.  Still, I give the Packers all my love and boo at the vikings.  I have some love for the Bears and Colts as well.  Gotta represent midwest, sorry, but no vikings love to be found.

Atleast the Pack didn't embarrass themselves too badly yesterday.  I had to work during the game, but I got plenty of internet updates with no sound.  man, i hate working on sundays.

Homer: A media member or fan who demonstrates little objectivity when assessing the local teams/players. They often cheerlead and are bias.

Blind Homer: A media member or fan who defends the local teams no matter what the circumstances are. Always gives the locals the benefit of the doubt and is an apologist for their poor performance. Uses superlatives to describe coaches or players.

there's a website to minnesota sports homers in the media.

check it: http://homersota.com/

i would say packer fans are mostly blind homers, most of my family lives in Milwaukee so i see first hand.  oh and i cheer for the pack when they play the vikings, i wore a cheesehead to the bars until people stole it and ripped it up.

It WAS a big win.  Divisional foe on Monday night, it doesn't get much bigger than that in the regular season.

And give my boys some credit.  The BENGALS DEFENSE HAD 6 TAKEAWAYS!  The reason I'm gloating to you in particular is that you seemed to think the Bengals D was in trouble during the preseason, but I believe I was my team who had 6 takeaways and a defense touchdown and your team that gave up 41 points.

Sure they should have won by more, but it's a W.  I'd rather eek out a win on opening night than have my ass handed to me on opening night.  Not much you can say about that.  But you're a saints fan, so I'm sure you're an expert at making excuses for your shitty team.

the bungles were 30th last year in total defense. 30th. Out of 32 teams. And you gloat to me b/c I think your D is suspect? 30th. And you are wondering why I think your D is suspect? 30th! It's not personal man, it's called 3rd worst defense in the NFL last year. Give me a break.

Secondly, I have been watching the Saints lose football games before you were on this planet and have taken more shit about the Saints than you can dream about. Would've been a great first week in the NFL if it wasn't for that hit in Buffalo.

Wonderful last-second games, some upsets and surprises, lots of intrigue going on this year.  We'll see how it all shakes out...I still like the Texans as a sleeper to make the playoffs now that they have Schaub going good.  TN and Jax aren't that good, I think Houston can slip in behind Indy.

I've explained to you before why the Total Defense stat its bullshit, because it doesn't factor in takeaways.  Takeaways are a good thing.  They win football games.  If you can't understand that, then I think I know who the moron is.  Besides that was last season, live in the now.

Sure, other people talk smack about the Bengals D, but I'd say the same thing to them if they were on this message board talking smack. The whole league also said that the Colts defense was suspect last year, but it was good enough for them to win a super bowl, so I'm not sweating what the haters.

You can keep calling me a homer, but you're the one who picked your saints to beat the colts and then made excuses for them after they got beat 41-10!

Thanks! I just thought it was some dumbass like Homer Simpson until now. Man I am going to "slip" not having a teenager in the house. It is up to the rest of you all to keep me going!

All these holdouts, what a fucking joke.  Russell won't even sign until after the season starts?
You know he's a cancer for the team, only thinking about himself, only listening to his agent...
He'll never go anywhere.  What a waste of a pick.

Even guys that hold out for over a week, it's like come on, don't you want to play?  Isn't that what this is about?  Even guys like Reevis and Quinn, who took a while but did sign, that's just a slap in the face to the rest of the team...if I was an owner I wouldn't put up with this shit.  If you aren't there the first day of camp, see ya later chump.

They are the ones making the investment though, so I feel them on getting screwed.  But still.

I don't get it.

I use to feel the same way and with some people I still feel that way.  BUT, there is a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes with the signings.  Al Davis has got to be the most corrupt owner in all of sports and he's trying to sign a multi year deal with Jamarcus Russell. And of course Russell wants to get whats best for him.  I think one of the issues with RUssell was an injury clause saying if he gets hurt he'll be compensated anyway.  From what I've read Jamarcus RUssell's uncle who is his advsor told the Raiders before he was even drafted that if they were'nt willing to offer that(which is pretty standard) then don't draft him.  THe Raiders agreed and then reneged.  Of course, this could all just be Russell's spin too but I'll believe him over AL Davis anyday.

thanks for the article, meg

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have known for years their fan base included countless women - that was evidenced by all the pink official team jerseys they sell and the hundreds who attend their female training camp each summer.

Yes, more than 300 women spend money each year to go through a simulated day of Steelers training camp, replete with blocking and running drills and a trip to the training table. The club also sponsors a Football Knowledge for Women classroom-type course.

Now the Steelers have proof that, when it comes to building a female fan base, Pittsburgh does it better than any other NFL market.

According to a Scarborough Sports Marketing survey of 220,354 residents in 75 United States markets conducted last year, Pittsburgh has, by far, the largest base of NFL fans who are women.

Pittsburgh is the runaway leader, with 34 percent of the women living in the Steelers' market identifying themselves as fans. Green Bay was second with 29.4 percent, but no other market surveyed had even one-quarter of its women identify themselves as fans.

Buffalo was third with 23.7 percent, followed by Cincinnati (22.8 percent), Kansas City (22.4 percent), Jacksonville (21.7 percent), Baltimore and Boston (21.5 percent) and Denver, Tampa-St. Petersburg and Washington, D.C. (20.9 percent).

Nationally, the average was 16 percent, which means that Pittsburgh has more than twice the number of female pro football fans than the average market, based on the survey's results.

frustrating game to watch for the colts.  they could have put the nail in the coffin in the middle of the 3rd quarter, but they made me sweat it out.  however to give houston credit, they're becoming a real team and the rest of the league better watch out the rest of the season and the next few years.

also if dallas clark wasn't behind reggie wayne and marvin harrison, he'd easily be heralded as the best tight end in football.  i love that guy.

the colts are as good as everyone thinks, or at least as good as i think they are.  they did the same thing last year--squeaking out wins against inferior teams--then they turned it on at the end of the season when it matters most.  also you have to keep in mind that houston is greatly improved compared to last year.  it's arguable that tennessee has improved since they lost travis henry, but they're still a team that will be a thorn in the side of a good number of opponents the rest of the season.  i do think the colts will figure it out.  joseph addai so far seems to have no problem being the main back, and i chuckle to myself every time marvin harrison runs that sideline route.  you know he's going to do it, and it still can't be stopped.

Giants finally won.

Awful first half had me thinking they were in for another blow out loss, but Eli really stepped it up, as did Shockey and Burress.

Derrick Ward also had a very nice game with some big first downs.

The defense collectively shut down the Skins in the second half.

Maybe we can turn it around after all.

The Cowboys really should take Crayton out of the game. He's playing with a broken pinky and has dropped 2 passes, one of them was in the endzone (right between the numbers).

Also, I know this is gonna get Dylan worked up, but Favre is having a pretty damn good season. I know that when I saw those jean commercials at the beginning of the season, I was yelling , "Retire, old man!", but now it's kinda fun to watch how well he's doing.

Steelers are really tearing it up. Granted, against not very good teams, but we're doing it dominantly like we should. The way our schedule is, we should at least go to 5-0. I'm looking at the game in New England as a really tougth one.
Just thought i'd add the Steelers have extended their streak of not allowing a running back to rush for 100 yards to 28 straight games!

Teams can call timeout whenever they want, the problem is that they ask the Ref to call it just before the snap, or when the play clock runs down to 2, and the Ref calls it just as the ball is snapped.

The new rule (if they pass one) has to do with the Ref calling it at a requested time.

For example, no timeouts with less than 10 seconds on the playclock on a field goal attempt....something like that.

I'm really liking the Cowboys right now. I think they have a good shot at going to the Big Game.

Did you guys just see that bad snap that Romo got the first down on? That's probably the longest run for 4 total yards that I've ever seen. Pretty damn impressive.

So the Cowboys are still undefeated and the Packers are a few minutes away from staying undefeated.

The Falcons are pulling it out over the Texans, which is a shame because I like the Texans. Most of their offense is injured, but they still hung in there pretty good.

Just, beat Tampa Bay please.

Usually a Giants game cause we get Fox Rochester.  Today they showed the last few minutes of the Vikings game, so that was nice (but not really).  Usually I'm able to catch 4 or 5 a year, as there's a few channels that show random games from time to time.

the 16-0 talk is very annoying only for the fact that everyone assumes the pats will pass easily through indy with a victory.  other than that, the pats are not even challenged this season except for indy, dallas, and pittsburgh.

also what the hell is all this tony romo superstar talk?  dude has played 14 games.  get over it.  when he's played 100 and is still at this level, he'll deserve the praise.

here, here. They do this evey year after 3 or 4 games; start the talk about 16-0. Always 1 or 2 of the teams that start out hot will cool down.

As for Romo, I got a love hate/thing with him. I love his enthusiasm and the way he bounced back after blowing the Seattle playoff game last year. However, he's a tad bit too cocky and how the hell can he ignore what TO has done to every QB he has played with? Everyone is happy when they're winning, but let's see what happens when the losses start rolling in, and they will. The teams they have played so far have a combined record of 3-14.

As for the Lightning Bolts, this year is what you get when you fire your coach after going 14-2. They can perhaps turn it around, but so far it's called karma.

And how can you not pull for Brett Farve?

And, the Saints, are giving me that warm, cozy feeling that I had back in 1979...

how many times has a team been able to have 5 turnovers or more and still win?, and now it happens twice in the same year and in the same week!?!

football is strange so far this year, methinks.

is it me, or does there seem to be loads more injuries this year?  concussions, minor injuries, season-ending injuries, etc seem to happen on almost every play.

I think you're right about the injuries. It's kinda fucked up.

How 'bout them Cowboys? That was pretty awesome. I saw the very end of the 3rd quarter through the last quarter. I was so pissed at Romo... then he managed to get them back in the game. Very strange game, but it was awesome to watch.

I really hate that fucking time-out rule. I mean, I can see the strategy in it and all that, but that doesn't make it any less fucked up.

Title: Re: The NFL Thread - 2007-08 style!!!
Post by: aMD on Oct 09, 2007, 02:10 PM
i definitely think you're right about injuries.  I think that the NFL needs to expand its roster so that they can carry replacements and stop forcing good players into early retirement. the bengals currently have two healthy LBs under contract, that's crazy!  Most teams have gone to using two RBs unless they are a pass heavy team like the Colts or the Bengals, but the league has not added another spot on the roster to accommodate this trend.  I think that each NFL team should have at least two more roster spots as well as practice squads.  just my two cents.

I fell asleep during MNF  :-/  sucks too because it sounds like it was a good one.  how in the world did romo have six turnovers and win the game?

I imagine there are going to be some not so exciting changes in the near future for the NFL.  All the players are getting bigger, stronger and faster and it's only going to continue.  I think rather that expanding roster space they will be more focused on reducing injuries.  I'm not sure how you do that though.  I would imagine it starts with even more steroid testing but thats not necessarily the cause of it.  With every team trying to gain an edge there is  more focus on biomechanics and the new training programs players are put through.  It will be interesting to see what happens.

better equipment might help.  there's some out there that doesn't get widely used for whatever reason.  i just think that if they expand the rosters then players wouldn't have as much accumulated damage. It wouldn't help all the injuries, but it might help.

Yeah, I have nothing but respect for Moss, and though I hate to admit it, Tom Brady is one of the best QB's of our time.

T.O.?  He's an incredible athelete.  But the ego is what I can't stand, especially since he drops more balls than a scientist measuring the time it takes for a ball to fall to the ground...yeah, bad analogy, but I had to think of it on the go.

The wheels are starting to come off in Cincinnati and it sucks.  I'm starting to think we may need a new coach to come in and change the atmosphere.  Maybe someone who understands that our defense is in shambles as is our O-line.  We're such an emotional team that if one thing bad happens it affects the rest of the game more than it should which in turn affects our entire season.  If we can get on a good role and build momentum we may have some chance of turning things around, but I just don't see how that's going to happen.  One fellow Bengal fan said to me yesterday that he's going to start rooting for the other team so we can get a high draft pick. I think it's a little early for that and I hope it doesn't come to that.

Shula can say what he wants. FUCK THE PATRIOTS!

I also dislike the Patroits but Shula does just sound like a grumpy old man. If he is as classy as everyone says he is he will let history decide the fate of this year's Pats.  btw, it seems like he's getting pretty nervous.  most years he'd still be saying "don't come to me when they're in my neighborhood, come to me when they are on my block"  I guess they're getting a little too close for comfort.

that said, I no longer think that the 16-0 talk is premature.  19-0 still is, though.

he does sound really nervous. and i think he should. time to wear depends don. but all joking aside... he's a great football mind, and he knows how good/great this team really is.

Holy cow look at the Saints remaining cup cake schedule:

Sun 11/18  at Houston (4-5)
Sun 11/25  at Carolina (4-4)
Sun 12/2  Tampa Bay  (5-4)
Mon 12/10  at Atlanta  (2-6)
Sun 12/16  Arizona     (3-5)
Sun 12/23  Philadelphia (3-5)
Sun 12/30  at Chicago  (3-5)

The playoffs are so possible if we don't fall back into the way we started the season. The NFC sux.

I'm almost (almost) embarassed to say it, and I wouldn't be admitting this had it not been for a win this past weekend, but I'm a Raiders fan. But they won, they beat an AFC West rival for the first time in like, 3 seasons or something, and this one was on the road! I'm going to the game this Sunday, BRONCOS. There's no other team that brings out the psychotic nature of the Raider Nation like the Broncos. Should be competitive at least, and the way Fargas has been running, with the backing of the home crowd, I think we can take this one. I'm also hoping JaMarcus Russell gets to finally play a few downs (at least).

I don't have a problem with Berman either. Olbermann is smug and critical and tries to talk over people's heads. Berman, at least uses references, that everyone can relate to; he's more of a working man's anchor whereas Olbremann seems to have a touch of white collar blue blood.

Here are some of Berman's best: http://funny2.com/berman.htm

I like to see Keith back doing sports highlights.  My favorite era of sportscenter was when him and craig kilborn did the morning edition.

however, his smugness has definitely grown after a decade or so of being a "pundit".  Still I wish he and kilborn would go back to espn.

OK, even worse since the game lived up to its billing. This does nothing but alienate fans, rather than have people running out to PAY to see the NFL on TV. Like the NFL is struggling for cash.

The Raider Nation is getting restless...the Broncos are coming to town.

If we can get this game on Sunday, I'll consider this season a success. Improved deficiencies from last season (O-Line, Rushing), beating the Chiefs in KC AND the Broncos at home, and drafting a promising QB with the first draft pick.

Aside from all that, there was an article written in the SF Chronicle this week, linking the Raiders head coach to the Arkansas vacancy. I'm still not sure how I feel about Kiffin, but he's outperforming Art Shell and Norv Turner, definitely a step forward. I'd hate for Al Davis to run another talented, young coach out of town.

Well, I went to the Raiders game, got everything I wanted and more; it was such a fucking sweet victory. JaMarcus Russell played for a few possesions in the 2nd quarter, and looked pretty comfortable for his first time on an NFL field. The Raiders defense looked strong (no, really, they really did), clamping down on the Broncos running game, and forcing 4 turnovers. The O-Line didn't allow one sack all day, and allowed Fargas to run for 150 yards (or so). And McCown didn't do anything stupid, actually looked and played like a leader, and was a very efficient passer.

Lastly, Raiders fans are fucking insane. The Coliseum rocks so hard when we smell blood, and we were raging for all four quarters yesterday. Sure, it's just one win, and the Raiders are still a middle of the pack team at best, but the win yeserday showed a solid, mistake (stupid penalty) free team with a lot of potential.

An important win for the steelers today, but it came with a price. Willie Parker is out for the season with a broken right fibula or something. There goes his chance at the rushing title. Davenport filled in nicely.  Big Ben's 3rd game with perfect QB rating, tying Peyton Manning.

Yeah they played at Iowa together...Orange Bowl 2003 baby!  I was there!  We ran back the opening kick but the rest of the game sucked.  I did meet 3 NFL players there though, one from my hometown.  Yeah I'm living in the past...but it was definitely a "fun" taunt, not bad blood, but still not smart.  There's probably not a whole lot of Cowboys fans here, but did anyone else think it was kinda bullshit with all the time run off in the last 1:30 of the game?  Between the fumble dispute and the Giants player being injured it cost them at least 30-45 seconds which was huge I thought.  They didn't deserve to win though with all the mistakes they made.  Too many dropped balls and stupid penalties.

Does anyone think the bolts can even give the pats a game?  I'm going to watch the game for historical purposes and to watch the Pats in awe once again but I don't expect it to be a game.  I hope I'm wrong.

The NFC game should be fun though.  Cold, snowy conditions.  The old man against little brother. I've eaten my words on Favre this season and I'm ready to admit that, but he really does have a great defense and the emergence of ryan grant and those young receivers have had a lot to do with the turn around in Green Bay.  I think Green Bay actually has a better chance of beating the Pats because their corners are so good, they MAY be able to cover NE's receivers one on one.  But I still don't think there's a man alive who can cover Randy Moss one on one.  And the pack still has to get past the giants whose D-line is out of this world.

Anyway, feeling verbose this morning, just a few impressions.

Uggghhh!!!! Before realizing what I'd done, a few weeks ago I volunteered to help some friends move this afternoon, so I'm not sure that I'll be able to see much of the Chargers/Pats game.

The Chargers have carried a LOT of momentum into this game, but without a healthy, contributing Rivers, I really don't think they have a chance. Their pass defense is average at best; I see Brady picking them apart all day long, one six-yard pass after another. I'm an AFC West guy, and I'd love to see the Chargers get the upset, but I think that their run is over for the season.

Well, I'm going to try and soak up some pre-game stuff before I have to go.
