The more I watch movies that I really love, the more I realize how difficult it must be to make a movie that is flawless the whole way through.
I'm asking YOU what is the most PERFECT MOVIE EVER MADE??????
I mean you have to rely on so many variables..(actors, script, direction, set design, soundtrack, cinematography, etc. etc.)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Either that or The Electric Cowboy.
QuoteEternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Either that or The Electric Cowboy.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. That movie really touched me....
I remember the scene Kate Winslet and Jim Carry had on the train as being some of the most heart felt and honest moments between actors that I've ever seen.
Good call.
I'll have to check out "The Electric Cowboy"
Not sure about the most perfect movie ever made but Dances With Wolves, Amelie, Cinema Paradiso & Goodfellas have been in my Top10 for many years.
I'm in no way a movie expert but you can't go wrong with The Godfather.
Or The Big Lebowski of course :D
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Arc
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The Godfather
The Godfather, Pt. 2
Dr. Strangelove
Patton
QuoteThe Godfather
The Godfather, Pt. 2
Peter Griffin might want you to rethink that...

As for me, I'd say Almost Famous is the perfect movie.
The Jerk ;)covers ALL the bases of life in a weird way :-?
as far as "perfect" movies, not favorites I'd have to go with
Citizen Kane
The Graduate
Big Fish
Big Lebowski
my contenders:
godfather part II
breakfast at tiffany's
gone with the wind
the big lebowski
fargo

we posted at almost the exact same time and I was REALLY considering adding fargo to the end of my list. greats minds...
I must preface by saying Heist and prison break movies are always at the top of my list (Allthough Into the Wild has been haunting my dreams - the last hour of the movie is just fucking spectacular). So...
Reservoir Dogs. I loved Pulp Fiction too and then Tarantino spirals into his own ego.
Dogday Afternoon.

What'd you think of Jackie Brown?

Not for me. It had moments ("When you have to kill every motherfucker in the room...), but it seemed like a movie made by a guy overly obsessed with marginal genres or styles of movie making. I'd love to see him try a big, over-the-top war epic. His most underrated work was Killing Zoe - he wrote the screenplay. Also a heist movie.
oh snap i forgot casablanca...
...and the royal tennenbaums
My favorite's are
Maltese falcon
Midnight run
Citizen kane
Of wine and roses
Anything Star Wars
Logans Run
Saving private ryan
Night and fog
das boot ( 1981 )
Metropolis
They might not be perfect but they are MY top choices
I like all the movies everyone has listed.
One of the worst movies I've ever seen was Water world
Amelie
Blazing Saddles
Italian Job (the original)
Goodfellas
Fargo
QuoteOne of the worst movies I've ever seen was Waterworld
That's one of my guilty pleasures.

If they trimmed it it down to an hour and a half I might have been able to stay conscious through it. Maybe I will take some no-doze and give it another shot :).
To enjoy that movie, you'd either have to be a total dork like me or you'd have to be using some sort of medicinal aide, I guess.
8-)
It's like Mad Max 2, though. Except on water.
Bottlerocket
Wild at Heart
Raising Arizona
Taxi Driver
Rushmore
Reservoir Dogs
Star Wars IV thru VI
E.T.
The Wall

I love Dennis Hopper , Easy Rider , Blue Velvet .
I am a huge dork myself. Maybe I will have to write myself a prescription for my GLAUCOMA ;). Before I start to look like this guy.

The Sweet Hereafter. (Most PERFECT sad movie ever.)
Hmm...off the top of my head:
This Is Spinal Tap
Raging Bull
Amelie
Almost Famous (aside from that part when the girl runs into the wall when chasing the bus)
The Royal Tenenbaums
Apocalypse Now
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Apocalypse Now is the correct answer to this question. I just can't watch it since I had kids. There's that scene where they shoot up the boat with kids in it. I just can't take violence towards kids anymore (even fictional). I had to stop watching Trainspotting at the point when the baby died and never finished. Maybe my job has poisoned me. (I know my job has poisoned me.)

Eternal Sunshine was my first thought. Forrest Gump comes to mind as well. I also just saw Saving Private Ryan a few days ago for the first time, it's very well done. It looks like I missed Into the Wild in theatres, but I "obtained" a copy and will be watching that tonight!

Don't ever watch City of God then!! Great movie but lots of violence towards kids, by kids. That scene where they make the kid choose which other kid to shoot to join "the gang" is tough to watch. And then the other little kid (who can't be more than 4 or 5 years old) goes limping away crying after he is shot in the foot...great movie, but not easy to watch...
Kingpin
Heavyweights (the fat camp movie)
the brady bunch movie
the goonies
dazed and confused
halfbaked
favorite stoner movies
Fast Times at ridgemont high, Heavy metal ( cartoon ) and The wall.
i don't know about perfect, here are a few favorites:
The Science Of Sleep
Donnie Darko
The Shining
Wild At Heart (just saw that not too long ago, might be my favorite from Lynch)
The Big Lebowski
Fargo
really almost anything by the Coen Brothers
i have to check out Amelie, been meaning to for some time.
Tough question because I don't think you are asking us what is the best film ever? I'll get back to you on this. Hitchcock, Ford, Capra, Kurosawa, Lean, Welles, Mann, Hawks, Miyazaki, Kazan, Coppola, Scorcese, Kubrick, Spielberg, Wise and countless others have made perfect films.
Yeah there isn't anything here that none of you haven't already listed. These are in my list of favs but I tried to stick with movies I thought of as "perfect". in no particular order
Dazed & Confused
Amelie
Godfather I & II
Young Frankenstein (That's pronouced Frank En Stein)
Dr Stranglove
Blade Runner
Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Yeah know theyare slighty different then the books but I judge them seperate from the books, and I'm a huge f'n dork.
And I love Waterworld
QuoteKingpin
the goonies
that movie defined my childhood
How could I forget Before Sunrise/Before Sunset. :-/
oh, and also, the princess bride. i had it on vhs and watched it so many times the tape broke.
Jaws is up there, too.
I haven't seen either of these listed yet: ;D
Monthy Python's Holy Grail
Blazing Saddles
Naked 2 1/2
I was thinking The Holy Grail. Every scene is a masterpiece.
I've been sick for a couple days, so I've been digging into our movie library pretty hard. Some of these I've recently seen, others are just perfect and always make the list:
-Ferris Bueller's Day Off (The best of John Hughes, and that's saying something)
-Sideways (Perfectly written, great wine)
-Chinatown (Possibly my favorite movie, THE MOST PERFECT)
-Return of the Jedi (I think the best from the series that defined my childhood)
-The Philadelphia Story (STAR power: Jimmy Stewart, Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant. The writing has stood up so well, so clever and funny)
-Dazed and Confused (Though it was set 20 years ahead of me, I don't think that there is a movie about my High School experience that is more accurate)
-Vertigo (No film has showcased my favorite city as finely)
-Before Sunset (Amazing dialogue, this one is pretty special)
Amadeus.
Legends of the Fall
Far and Away.
Why Cruise didn't get nominated, I'll never know. He had that accent nailed.
The Departed is not perfect but it's so damn close.
Forgot
Election
High Fidelity
Pee Wee's Big Adventure
The Adventures of Milo and Otis
Mothra
You guys are class!
the same three have taken my top films for the past many years:
1. the graduate
2. rushmore
3. red beard
i love a lot of movies, but those three, holy fuck. they make me feel the spirit in which i think they were made.
Local Hero
Breaking Away
Daddy Day Care
Definitely had a brain fart and my second nomination ought to be The Electric Horseman. Classic Robert Redford. A bit cheesy, but still relatively wonderful. Good plot, great chases, a not-terribly happy/cliché ending. My dad has this thing for really frickin cheesy transcendentalist 70's westerns. Not the worst thing you could be into, but some of it's just flat-out lame. Electric Horseman is certainly worth watching, though. (Plus, I think every man needs that guilty "I'd go gay for..." guy and Robert Redford definitely takes it in this one for me. Just a thought.)
Manhattan
Annie Hall
Election
QuoteManhattan
Annie Hall
I like the way you think! I am also a huge Woody Allen fan. I'd add Purple Rose of Cairo to that list.

is that the one with the heartbreaking well scene? been a while. i think it is.
I can't believe nobody mentioned The Apartment
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
GHOST WORLD!
I think I'm going to watch it right now actually. Daniel Clowes is a God.
When A Student Becomes A Teacher
WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER as far as comedy goes. I can look at Paul Rudd and just crack up.
I got to say The Prestige
Papillon
The Ice Storm
Welcome to the Dollhouse
QuoteThe Sweet Hereafter. (Most PERFECT sad movie ever.)
YES-couldn't agree more.

It just kills me on every level. The broken lawyer with the drug-addict daughter still chasing the $$, greed vs. grief, etc...
jaws - character development, suspense, people still dont go in the water perfect
Braveheart by far.
Big Lebowski in a distant second.

just saw The Ice Storm the other day, that movie is great! It's shot so beautifully and the colors and waredrobe were amazing. Am I sick because I was laughing during a lot of Kevin Kline's lines.
and seriously, folie has the greatest avatar ever.
QuoteBraveheart by far.

I just can't stop looking at this guy's avatar. I keep waiting for more stuff to happen, but it never does. What an avatar-tease.

I put that bounce towards the end up there with the bounce from Meg White's performance on
Let's Build A Home from Conan a few years ago.

I liked The Departed a lot but if I had to pick the perfect Scorsese movie it would def have to be Goodfellas.
I watched some older movies the other day that were really amazing....
-Dog Day Afternoon (Atttica!!!) :)
-Eazy Rider (PERFECT, I really can't get over this movie) Remindes me of "Into The Wild" crossed with "Deathproof" a couple of awesome NEW movies I've seen recently. It's flat Genius.
