I'm not familiar with his work but I really liked what that article said about it.  

What should I start with?

Shame, talented guy.  I heard when he first got a taste of fame he checked himself into a hospital.  
Infinite Jest is definitely worth the long read. A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again (nonfiction) has great stories about cruise ships and being on a David Lynch set.  Sad news.
