hey kids!
i've been working on a new show. the pilot airs tonight on A&E. i didn't work on the pilot (just on the series), but i think it's very good! (i am a terrific tv snoot and don't often recommend programs)
it's a drama. (what?! drama on tv?! shocking!)
the cast is REALLY GOOD. benjamin bratt is the star.
here's what daily candy said today:
QuoteJuly 15, 2008
So Fresh and So Clean
The Cleaner!
Honest, genuine, friendly on the eyes, and always satisfying.
Sigh. Good TV is hard to find.
But great TV? That's a cinch now that A&E's The Cleaner is making its series debut tonight at 10 p.m.
Based on a true story, the profoundly moving show stars Benjamin Bratt (um, hello) as William "The Cleaner" Banks, a former heroin addict who makes a deal with God for a second chance. In exchange, Banks — along with his unconventional team — must help others kick their addictions.
The result: a refreshingly poignant and sincere show guaranteed to glue you to the tube — and affect you for a long time after (par for the course at A&E).
if this sounds like your speed, tune it. let me know if you think it's any good. (yahoo, and variety panned it by saying it was "not cheerful". what ass-hats. drug addiction should be cheerful? honestly.)

full disclosure: we have a push button grind and brew by the CUP coffee maker in the office. i don't look on it as payola. just good business. ;)
I just saw an add for that the other day and thought it looked interesting. Now I will definately give it a shot!
Isn't "The Cleaner" what they called Harvey Keitel in Pulp Fiction? Different kind of cleaner I guess. :)
E! I can't go anywhere around the city and subway system without seeing Benjamin Bratt's mug the last week or so. I' ll set the tivo. :)

I thought they called him "The Wolf."

Right... and Jean Reno in... something that's escaping me.
Either way, I thought that's what this show would be about when I first heard of it... now I'm a bit disappointed, but like BB alright.
Leon - The Professional
I saw an ad for this just last night. Mr. Bratt looks, um, nice!! :-*
Will tune in!
Ahh yes, The Wolf would be the name.
My favorite part of that whole scene is what I call the "coffee nod".
First there is this "back and forth" before the wolf arrives...
JULES
Goddamn Jimmie, this is some serious
gourmet shit. Me an' Vincent woulda
been satisfied with freeze-dried
Tasters Choice. You spring this
gourmet fuckin' shit on us. What
flavor is this?
JIMMIE
Knock it off, Julie.
JULES
What?
JIMMIE
I'm not a cobb or corn, so you can
stop butterin' me up. I don't need
you to tell me how good my coffee
is. I'm the one who buys it, I know
how fuckin' good it is. When Bonnie
goes shoppin;, she buys shit. I buy
the gourmet expensive stuff 'cause
when I drink it, I wanna taste it.
Then later, after The Wolf arrives, he asks for coffee, and after Jimmie brings it to him he takes a taste and gives Jimmie a little cup tip and nod of approval basically saying the same thing that Jules did without wasting words. Hilarious. Just a small little thing that makes Tarantino so great.

;D yeah, there's not a lot of assassinating on the show.
not...yet!
no. really. nothing like that.
for the most part, the characters are complex, which makes watching and working on the show much more interesting for me. i've worked on some corn-pie stuff, so it's nice to on a show with a little substance.
(i don't want to over sell this: it's not the west wing or anything)
anyway: thanks for the support kids! murph: great to hear it's getting some advertising out there!

Yep. Little bits like this and the scene between Bruce and his Frenchy about pie and getting breakfast while he's sitting on the chopper covered in blood. It's the little things.....
I will try to check this out for Ms Y. I say something today about this show.

It was actually a Bridget Fonda movie called "No Way Out" (an American adaptation of "La Femme Nikita") in which Mr Keitel played a cleaner, complete with Hydrochloric Acid (the better to dissolve the body my dear...)
What do you mean when you say you've worked on it? Did you help script it, shoot it? Very interesting!
I have the pilot recorded but I have not watched yet. Maybe tonight....
i work as an assistant editor. in picture, not script, capacity.
the original pilot was edited by another team. after a show has been picked up for series by a network, the pilot is usually changed a little: we have to cut the show a little differently to get to a specific running time, or scenes are added to clarify story points.
so i did have some work to do on the pilot, but VERY LITTLE compared to the assistants assigned to that show and what we do on an episode we make soup to nuts.
the hours can be nuts, but i really like what i do. :)
Quotewe make soup to nuts.
I wish I knew what this meant. I mean, I'm old, I should know....but I don't.... :-[ :-[
the phrase soup to nuts refers to an old fashioned multi course meal.
the first course being soup, the last nuts.
it went something like this:
soup
fish
entree
desert
cheese
nuts
(this is inaccurate, but you get the idea)
the phrase "from A to Z" is equivalent, but not nearly as fun to say. [smiley=beer.gif]
EPISODE TWO ON TONIGHT!
--surfer chicks!
--bad dudes!
--cool cars!
just a reminder to you tivo setters out there. ;)
Crap! I missed the show again! I don't have tivo....
Ms Y, thanks for the lesson!!
Tacos in LA perhaps? September pre-MMJ? Villa Sombrero - they have a 3 margarita maximum for a reason. (Though, really, I have had 4 at one sitting, or so they tell me!!) 8-) :o 8-) :o

Much, MUCH, better than the pilot! Probably because you were involved. ;) :)
thanks, teo!
the next three weeks are all shows i assisted on, too. (it's been busy here. whew.)
vespa-C: perhaps some margaritas or sangria even!
WEEK 3!
tonight is "Meet the Joneses."
if you see it you may see cool visual effect sequence that i built myself. took me ALL DAY to figure out how to do it. now, i'm an old hand at the technique!
good guest acting by Annabeth Gish and Tate Donovan. [smiley=beer.gif]
Was it the 6 rotating panels going from character portrait to pill popping at home sequence? If so, that was really cool. I also liked the part where I believe she was searching for pills at home and the image jumped back and forth between the left and right of the screen.
I watched the first episode last night. I liked it. Will definately keep watching. It was a real tear jerker at the end. Wow. :'(
QuoteWas it the 6 rotating panels going from character portrait to pill popping at home sequence? If so, that was really cool.
it was!
we had the east-coast broadcast feed on the tv in the office friday evening. after that sequence aired i turned to face the rest of the edit. staff and took a deep bow. ;D
bh-glad you liked it!
The 4 panel clockwise moving snorting sequence was really cool. I will have to admit I have never paid so much attention to scene editing and it has given me a new and fresh perspective that I am really enjoying. The wife is getting hooked on the show as well.
Ms-Y,
My daughter told me about this show a couple of weeks ago. I have seen the last 2 episodes and also loved them! Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon this thread and found out that you worked on it. Awesome.
Great work. And how hot is Benjamin Bratt?! Whew, he is so great in this role. And did I mention "HOT"? Congrats, lucky, talented girl.
thanks for the good words!
we're airing again tuesday night. here's the funny part: i'm not sure which episode is airing. there have been some scheduling changes b/c the olympics are airing on another network.
it will suprise us all!
I checked last evening and it looked like 3 repeats.
I'm halfway thru episode three and hooked!
However, I am going to be a bit bummed when we get to the episode entitled, "The Wino Engineer".
By the way, I heard some Black Mountain in Ep. 3! Sweet.

Yes, and my best friend is the one that turned me in to The Cleaner just so he could pretend like he was helping by "taking all of the wine out of my house."
brilliant! ;D

Ms. Y, you probably are not in charge of the music selection but I think 20-25 seconds of Highly Suspicious would be perfect for a scene involving the police, a knock on a door, and some frantic flushing of evidence down the toilet. Great idea right? You don't even have to put my name in the credits, it's totally gratis.
Hiighheeeeee!

BH is a man of experience. I know his mate Gary, who said:
Caught by the fuzz
Well I was, still on a buzz
In the back of the van
With my head in my hands
Just like a bad dream
I was only 15
If only my brother could be here now
Hed get me out he'd sort me out alright
I knew I should have stayed at home tonight
Locked in the cell, feeling unwell
I talked to a man,
He said its better to tell
Who sold you the blow,
Well it was no one I know
If only you'd tell us wed' let you go
We'll make it up for you my son,
So tell us what you know,
Well make you wish you'd stayed at home tonight
Here comes my mum, well she,
She knows what Ive done
Just tell them the true,
You know where he's from,
You've blackened our name,
Well you, you should be ashamed
If only your father could see you now,
He'd breakdown and he'd throw you out for sure,
I never should have let you out tonight
:D
Mark, you are my idol.

NOTED!
i do put in some music that is only temporary--it gets replaced with stuff we can afford to license. every once in awhile a song will stick and the show will buy it for air.
for the record: it's tough to track with mmj. this is the third series i've worked on that i've tried to use their songs. ;D
Kick ass ending to "Chaos Theory" episode with the Band of Horses. That was intense. Perfect mood song for that scene. This show is really growing on me.
I always loved Grace Park from Battlestar Gallactica so more of her is definately a good thing. For example, here is two of her.

Great episode this week. Athlete, father in denial etc. The "nodding" scenes were especially authentic in that as fifteen year olds we were privileged to witness the local fauna at the pool hall in our town go through all of the phases. Nice pic. BH as I did not even know who she was.
i thought the actor playing the dad was terrific. everytime i saw that last scene in the kid's bedroom i was moved...and i saw that scene MANY times. ;D and the end. damn. soooo good.
i've just wrapped my time on the cleaner, as the show is winding down. we're hopeful that A&E will pick it up for another season *fingers crossed*
Just watched the finale. I really enjoyed it. Particularly the Cat Power scene. I hope it comes back for a second season. Have to find out if William gets out of the dog house! ;D
ahh! i haven't seen the last 2 episodes. i left before they were finished. glad to hear the last one was a ringer!
i've been on a diff. show for the last 6 weeks. it was nice to read over this thread. i really miss working with that crew. such good, even keeled, creative people.
i like the show i'm on these days, but we're in a basement office and the studio is CHEEEEEEEEEP. pfft. so.
got my last day notice today. 2 weeks! if anyone out there is looking for an assistant editor on a narrative tv show (not reality-type stuff. never again. meh.), send a carrier pigeon my way. ;)
dave, i think A&E picked up on the internet buzz on this show based on your post last week.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – A&E Network has picked up a second season of its drama series "The Cleaner," which stars Benjamin Bratt as a real-life extreme interventionist.
Production will begin shortly on 13 episodes slated to premiere next year.
"Cleaner" marked A&E's first scripted series in more than six years when it debuted in July. In its first season, the series averaged a total of 4.2 million total viewers combined over its three weekly telecasts.
