Anyone else experiencing this? Every time I bring them up, I get the smirk or a chuckle along with a head shake from my wife down to my best friends. Is it that odd for man in his 30's to be obsessed with a current band??
Pretty sure they are considering an intervention any day now.
Nah fuck them....
everyone's gotta passion
and you've found yours!
I showed my friends that bonnaroo 04 dvd and two of them are total music snobs. they're like "oh I hate music like this where blah blah blah". stupid opinions, the rest of the people in the room were just watching because they fucking dug it. in the end I found out that those two kids think my morning jacket is fucking awesome now and pretend like they discovered them, haha typical. thought its funny, you really can't escape my morning jackets grasp once you experience one of those moments.
my mother, for the life of her she's 76, cannot remember the name My Morning Jacket. A couple of years ago I told her that we were going to Atlanta to see My Monring Jacket, and she talked to my brother the next day and he told me she told him that we went to Atlanta to see My Sunday Socks. true story
QuoteMy Sunday Socks.
that'll be the name of my MMJ cover band
my friends reaction when telling them i'm going to see MMJ at MSG on NYE..."who??????"
I too, get the 'oh shit-he's talking about them again' jargon from friends and families....and while some are annoyed by it, I believe most are either consciously or subconsciously impressed and in awe of someone who has SO much passion and eagerness regarding something that is sacred in a pretty bland (some say secular) world. They can notice a 'light' light up when I talk about them......
...and hell, they deserve to 'preached' about at any given opportunity...they both have and will in the future literally save human lives with the music they have created....myself included (Strangualation)
I guess Im lucky, no one really gives me shit for it. Yesterday my father in law was asking about New Years and the trip Im making to Kentucky for the Louisville show (from Philadelphia) and he thought it was cool. "I followed Earth, Wind, and Fire around for awhile" was his response. I told him I think theres a fair chance they cover them on New Years lol.
I'm hoping I can "convert" my wife during the NYE show. She doesn't mind them, but that's all I have been playing for 6 months and she just hasn't ever "gotten" it.
....whenever my sister asks me what concert I am going to and I saw My Morning Jacket she can't understand why I go see them all the time....she thinks seeing someone once is enough, but shes never seen My Morning Jacket....and if you tell somebody about the band that has never heard of them before sometimes you get the snicker because of their name.....
Haha, I can relate. My girlfriend just said yesterday when I was talking about MMJ (again), "You're like a groupie or something".
;D

Ha. I was GOING to say that you guys are lucky cause you don't get called groupies, but I guess it's all around. When I was thinking about getting tickets for Tenn. and making the 'Nashville to Kentucky' trip with my friend my husband said " Your geting a little scary groupie on me".
Luckily I've converted one of my good friends. My husband will admit that he likes them (how could he not) but he's jealous of my undying love.
this morning i was telling my friend about my trip to nyc to see the band last weekend. she listened politely, but she was wearing the patient expression i give her when she's talking about her kids' pre-school activities. ;D ;D
after years of familiarity with my tour habit, last march my i texted my editor from houston. he replied with, "what band are you stalking now?"
;D (i was excited to tell him, "both my morning jacket AND wilco!")

Thanks for making me lol at 4:00 a.m. ms y!
More like my 80 yr. old father saying something like "when are you going to go see all of those weirdos you know in Kentucky" when I talk about meeting people from the boards.

Funny! That's who I'm stalking too! MMJ at Radio City and Wilco at Tanglewood.. great bands at great venues, you can't go wrong. What an awesome summer for music! And then MMJ is back in Boston in Sept! :D
I got it the other day telling my buddies about how I went to New York to see a show at Radio City...one asked who I saw, then slapped his forehead when I said My Morning Jacket, as he said, "Of course". And telling my brother about the MMJ shows I'm going to this year, he said, "you're a Jackethead". True dat! :D

Hey Yvon - speaking of Wilco, were you and Paul at the Montreal show in 2005 where MMJ opened for them? I think I remember seeing you guys there...maybe I'm just projecting. ;)
My buddy, who left the Bonnaroo '08 early, has actually stopped liking them because all I have done is talk about them/listen to them.
My wife also finds it strange for a guy in his 30's to be so "obsessed" with a band.
Oh well, their loss.
All of my family like them to a certain extent (except one of my sisters, who loves them as much as I do) so I can't complain. My parents really like Golden.

It all depends upon how many board members you have met....... ;)
I get it from my friends, but the difference between me and them is that I have good musical taste. They have no idea. Drag them to one of MMJ's shows and I guarantee a conversion like Sammy Davis Jr. becoming a Jew.

my mother says i would have been married by now if it weren't for my preoccupation with 'trape-sing off to all those weird concerts' and she also told me i'm getting too old for woodstock festivals lol....

LOL...that is awesome. they should read that and write a song called that....!
I have a group of fellow Jacketeers that are just as obsessed as I am...so I'm pretty lucky..
but my dad..he just doesnt understand the need to spend money on going to see a band so many times when you can jsut hear them on the radio or a CD...what he doesnt understand is that you can't hear them on the radio (which I love)..i feel sort of protective of MMJ like I dont want the idiot masses to jump on the train..a wreck such a wonderful thing...much like the destroying of Phish by the idiot's who just took molley and wondered around the parking lots.
Almost all of my summer plans involve me going to see MMJ...I went to Radio City, I'm going to Louisville, I'm going to Miami, then Philadelphia, then last stop MSG on NYE..
I would say i have a slight obsession...and yes sometimes my friends do role their eyes at me when I continue to bring up Jim James and his sexy swagger
yeah but now since they're on the cover of every mag, i'm suddenly validated or something!! lol --people are like 'hey i saw that band you like--morningwood or my chemical jacket-big article in RS mag--can you burn me one of their discs?' which is cool but 5 min ago you thought i was a fruit loop
Ha, it's so great! One of my bosses came into the office the other day and said, "hey, I didn't know all Vespa riding chicks love full metal jacket; I saw a Vespa over on Lovejoy street with a full metal jacket sticker!!" Ya, that was mine. At least he recognizes the "Jacket" part!
And when I drove my friends out to the hike this weekend and put in a cd (At Dawn), the response was "standard", "what a surprise". Ha ha, suck it babies!!!! ;D ;D
What an awesome thread. It always nice to know i'm not alone in this.
I get comments from friends and family constantly. My folks were shocked when I told them that I was skipping bar exam classes and flying up to NY from Miami, for RCMH, "just to see a concert?" as they said. My friends laughed when I told them about it, because "dude, their coming to Miami Beach in August, just wait until then." When I told my folks that I was going back to NYC for to NYE concert all they could do was shake their heads and asked if going broke was worth it.
I replied with one word, "yes"
I get various responses from people who ride in my car. It ranges from, "not these guys again" to "you're obsessed."
The good thing though, is that I have dragged many a virgin friend to some of their shows only to have my friends say to me, "wow, that was amazing." Best was at RCHM after the show, my friend, who is somewhat of a music snob, but who's tastes I respect said to me, "THAT, is what a f---ing rock show should be like!"
And in even more exciting news, my love has spread to a few more of my friends who are studying abroad in Europe this summer. As soon as I found out a few months ago that they would be in Amsterdamn the same time that MMJ was, I told them that they HAD to see the jacket there. They were a little lazy getting tickets so one day i just said, "screw it" and went only to buy them 5 tickets to see the show. They were shocked when the tickets were delivered, and so I then burnt them, "haldon's dream MMJ set list" and made them all copies of it. Now they can't stop listening to it and are super stoked about the concert in a couple of days.
I still can't escape the taunts of my friend's calling me "My Haldon Jacket," and some make fun of the fact that I spend lots of time on a bands message forum, but at least some of them are beginning to understand why the love is there. Case in point. I got a hold of 3 FLOOR GA tickets to the NYE show and told a whole bunch of my friends that if they were interested they could have one of the tickets, and the response was overwhelming. Now my only problem is deciding who to take.
Deflecting the Hate. Spreading the Love. Thats it.
Absoletely!!
It's worse than when I clued in to the Grateful dead two years too late.
I just want someone else I know to get it and want to talk about how good they are.
Actually I'm so obsessed I'm completely annoying myself.
This is the band I've been looking for my whole life.
Am I getting any rolling eyes among this community yet?
G
I lent a friend my ipod and after he listened he started talking about how I was obsessed with a band called 'Rain Coat'

Of course not...this is where we come to make sure we are normal...and we aren't!!!!!!!!! :D
I agree about this being the band I've been waiting my whole life for. My favorite band was always The Band and I always preferred the music that of that era, and shit like that. But that music, those bands were from another generation. My Morning Jacket is mine. They are my generation and I get to see them play live and I know what it feels like to wait for their records to come out, and I know that they share the same cosmic what-with-all that I do. It's exciting!
Wow, someone that wants to talk about MMJ with me!!!
Well I've never been accused of being normal. :o
I agree completely with your comments lovedog. This is one of the first bands I have gotten completly wrapped up with from my generation. It is exciting isn't it?
Them and the Raconteurs have really spawned a rejuvinated exitement for Music with me.
Pretty lame being a deadhead when I became a fan in 1997.
And perhaps seeing Dylan 13 times since 1996 is a little much. ? ;)
Can't wait for the NE show in NY. I have 101 tickets (best I could get at 10:05 :'(
G
My friend said i should have called my dog My Morning Jacket - that way I could have said My Morning Jacket all the time everyday.
I constantly get my balls busted about always listening to them and always talking about them. At the same time these people all end up asking me for more. HAHAHA more MMJ always!!!!!
my friends have to much pride to ask for MMJ music. If they didn't discover it, they can't listen to it.

ditto. ::) their loss!
This is kind of on subject. My birthday was this past weekend and it was for my birthday that my wife agreed to the Louisville show. My parents were in town over the weekend and for my present they said they were going to pay for our room in Louisville plus they gave me enough cash to pay for all we do that weekend. All that I have left to pay for really is gas there and back, probably around $300. A small price to pay for the magic that will happen. Well, my brother came in town yesterday and he and his wife gave me and my wife a joint bday present. It was a gift basket with snacks and a gas card with a stuffed kermit doll in it. His card said "have fun at Kermit's Morning Jacket". It looks like my entire trip is basically paid for by my family. Easily the best birthday gifts ever.

wow--sounds like your fam is supporting your habit:-) congrats !! great gift!
I always seem to get ''Oh that band your into, The Jacket?"
Similar to when I first started listening to Gram Parsons. I'd always get the "Who is this guy"? whenever I'd play him for friends!
Yeah, every once and awhile, when I've got my earbuds in or the radio playing, one of my bosses will walk in and say, "Oh is that, uh, Morning Jacket?" It took about two years, but they've finally learned the name.
Converting them has been an entirely different issue, I'm afraid.

wow! no motorized tie rack or bad tie for you! what a thoughtful and generous gesture from your family!
I'm a bit worried about myself actually, I have only been into the band for a matter of weeks, a couple of months ago I had not even heard of them, but during the last few weeks I have seen them live four times and will see them for the fifth time tomorrow night, I have met Carl and had his autograph framed, I have bought three of their cds and a dvd. I have a picture of Jim as my screensaver at work, have had two t-shirts customised with the band's photo on and stay up late at night looking at youtube clips of the band. This cant be normal! I think I might need medical help, I seem to be suffering from Jacket fever and am not sure if there is a cure!
EMBRACE the "fever." I certainly have.

yes, that's how it starts:-) don't worry, we won't make you drink the koolaid! congrats-you have stumbled upon something beautiful.
Well, I have a great group of friends that get together every Monday night, usually to play Cornhole (no jokes please) or horseshoes or some other sort of low energy, but often competitive lawn game (Yahtzee if it's raining) to pass the time and bullshit the way we can't when our wives and girlfriends are around. Lately, a couple of us have been jamming quite a bit, and everybody seems to like the music and the "sing-a-longs."
Anyway, I was the first one to arrive yesterday and was blasting 'Magheeta' as I pulled in. I got out to get my guitar and beer out of the back of my vehicle and my buddy John pulls in blasting 'I'm Amazed!" Right behind him, Donnie has got "Highly Suspicious" blaring, and I'll be damned if Mike didn't whip in right behind him with 'Bermuda Highway' from Acoustic Citsuoca playing!
Granted, they all give me a hard time about not shutting up about MMJ, but they all love 'em too, I guess, huh?
I know I'm setting myself up for a boatload of snarkiness by some people ..... but I just made OBH my new ringtone on this fancy cell I can barely operate.
WAKIN' UP FEELIN' GOOD AND LIMBER WHEN THE TELEPHONE IT RINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's pretty flippin awesome. :D

You have spread the good word well!
Being someone that tends to take things to the extreme (with sincerity of course) I always try to watch that I keep some things I'm passionate toned down.
People tend to want to hate things people seem to love too much.
This is one of those cases.
It will be much more fun to go see MMJ with my girlfriend if she likes them then if she becomes annoyed by me talking about them too much... Soooo long to go.
Looks like I might be making the Nashville and/or Phili show in the iterim though!!!

So if you came over to my house and saw this hanging on my wall...Would THAT be considered TOO MUCH? :-/ :-/

EDIT: in case you think I'm serious, Yes, I think this is too much.
Thats an awesome painting. I have never been swallowed by a band like this. Just saw them for the first time and we got home from the 11 hour drive and ordered tickets for Seattle( 12 hour drive)!!!!! I am 26 and have payed attention to music since a very young age and there is nothing like this out there. I know what the Dead Heads must have gone through. Any tips for meeting the guys at a show?
We just went away for a few days and I played an MMJ mix in the car. Dad was tapping his fingers on the steering wheel to Lowdown. I told him to keep the cd. Hopefully he listens to it more.

Good call lovedog. I had to put all their albums on Mp3 CD so I can have that in my car and them in my house. I seriously can't go anywhere without them. MMJ is the best drug out there!

I've got that tatooed across by belly! :D
I just became a member after reading this thread, I had to join....it's so nice to know I'm not the only one! I've been a fan for a while, saw them on their Z tour, but I recently saw the dallas show (w/erykah) and it seriously CHANGED my life. I'm completely obsessed. My friend who I went to the show with lives about 3,000 miles away so I can't outwardly endulge on a daily basis. my husband really likes the band, but was not at the recent show so he really doesn't "get it"....luckily tho we have tickets to the NYE show so I'm sure that'll do the trick!
But anyways, yes I know all about the eye-rolling, the "big surprise" when an MMJ song comes on, the snickering....and the inability to STOP watching youtube videos or the tireless efforts to find out as much as I can, no matter how seemingly irrelevant, about them. thanks for letting me know it's ok to be a "f**ckin weirdo". ;)

Welcome to the weirdos Monica! :D
The missus loved them first so I bought her Z when it came out also tickets to their San Diego HOB concert. After that I love them, too.
The wife tends to play the songs loud enough for people to start asking "who's that you're playing?"
And that's how she gets 'em hooked. :D

I keep talking about them at work. I listen to shows everyday on the computer. I saw the JIM-O-latern pic and put it on my desktop. I showed it to a bunch of peopple and they say "How do you know it's him?" I said I know what jim looks like, and showed them a pic. They all rolled their eyes. On the good side though, I showed it to one girl, and she said it was awesome!
