Title: The Official March Madness Thread
Post by: primushead on Mar 11, 2009, 02:29 PM
Conference Tournaments this weekend...

FOLLOWED BY THE BEST SPORTING EVENT OF THE YEAR!!!!

I call Pitt to win the Big East Tournament.

Michigan State's got the Big 10.

I'm guessing Kentucky will come up strong in the SEC.

And I'm actually taking Wake to beat Carolina in the finals for the ACC tournament.

Let's get it goin! :D

Illini to run the tables in the Big 10 and get a 3 seed!! :D :D :D

Does anyone else believe that the ACC is iffy after Carolina.  With Memphis and Oklahoma and Mich. St.  being big ???, another wide open tourney it is.

This is not a good Kentucky team. They play Ole Miss tomorrow at noon and we beat then in Oxford (minus our best 2 players who won't be back).

I think Louisville beats Pitt.

And for goodness sakes, how about they split up the Big East? How anyone considers Louisville, Marquette, Depaul, Cincinnati, Notre Dame or Pittsburgh (and even West Virginia and South Florida) "east" schools is beyond me.

Lawson probably won't play in the tourney for NC.

And Memphis State will win the Conference USA

I like Oklahoma in the Big 12 (even though i am rooting for Mizzou)

I got a lot of basketball to watch!

How is Pitt not east? I've always considered this area to be northeast. As you can see on wickipedia here, PA is not part of the midwest (not that you implied that), nor have I ever heard it referred to as that. So if not the east/northeast then what?

Ohio is in the midwest and Pittsburgh is about 25 miles east of Ohio...Philly is northeast (and about 260 miles EAST of Pittsburgh).

East should be from states on the east coast, IMO. Especially if you have 16 freaking teams in your conference. I am comparing "east" to UConn, Georgetown, St Johns, Providence, Rutgers, Seton Hall, etc...  teams that are on the east coast (like it used to be).

And Mexico is near Texas but that doesn't make it part of the states, you have to draw the line somewhere. Even with your argument (witch I still don't agree with) it would be silly to break up what has been one of the best conferences in college basketball. I'm not even that much of a basketball fan but I do know that much.

The SEC only 4 less teams at 12.  They also have a east and west division, so I suppose that means half the teams are in the western southeast.   :-/

I think so. It makes more sense. The greatest distance between 2 SEC West schools is LSU and Auburn (350 miles) and the East it's Kentucky and Florida (600 miles, which is the greatest distance between 2 SEC schools).

The Big East is TOO big and TOO spread out.

Distance between Marquette and South Florida - 1,100 miles
Marquette and Providence - 950 miles
Providence and South Florida - 1,100 miles

You have entire major conferences (ACC and Big 10) within the width/ range of Big East schools.

And there's 11 teams in the Big 10!

Whacky!

All those other teams you grouped in with Pitt are significantly further west. Now ND and Marquette are in the heart of Big 10 country, so that doesnt make much sense, but what other conference would you put Pitt in exactly?! Putting 1 of those teams I mentioned in the Big 10, or Georgetown in the ACC would make much more sense. South Florida could go somewhere else too, but its not like the Pac10 or ACC dont have the same north-south long distances. A bunch of conferences have weird gerrymandering-esque stuff as to why teams are in a certain conference, no biggie.

...So Memphis State is going to upset Memphis in C-USA, eh?!  :D

..and the Big 10 has 11 teams because Penn State joined the conference 20 or so years ago, and they never changed the name. It would make much more sense for us to be in the Big East and give it another team though  ;D

Speaking of screwed up conference teams/locations, how about my "other" team, the St. Louis Billikens playing in the "ATLANTIC" 10.  They aren't even on the atlantic side of the Mississippi!    I thought it was a bad idea when they moved to the conference, however, they are a perfect fit when it comes to school size, school type and the fact that there is no football at any of the A10 schools.  But damn, they have some serious travel.

So I am watching the highlights of the Big Sky Championship where Portland St. beat Montana St. to go the the big dance, and they are showing the celebration and all these streamers are coming down on the players and the ESPN guy says, "That's a lot of confetti."

Confetti?

See, it's bullshit like this, calling streamers confetti, that just makes me want to not watch the tournament this year. In fact, it makes me want to just go up in the woods, with my rifle and enough water for the summer, and hold out for football season.  >:(

Don't get me started on these Presidents and there athletic departments.  I couldn't agree with you more.  Of course I am one that believes that college athletes, particularly Division I basketball and football players, should be compensated with some form a a living stipend.  What I find aggravating the most is the lack of media criticism that the Presidents face when they bust out their pretextual, obligatory "student athlete, it's all about academics speech."  Additionally, the fans just take it.

There should be a team cap instituted and the Big East should be dismantled.  Either that or many more super conferences should be created.  This current setup just doesn't make any sense.  Louisville should remain in CUSA or bump into the SEC.  Marquette should be in the Big Ten with Notre Dame and Penn State should be in the Big East.  Miami and FSU should be in the SEC.  Blah blah blah.

Question is..."What do you do with Hawaii?"

Actually, all teams should play in Hawaii year round.  We could hold the conference tournaments there, and even have the big dance there.

Who would argue with this?

Here we go again.  AMD, we can have our annual slap fight about this; but is the Big Ten really about to get more teams in the field than the ACC.  Don't get me wrong, I don't think either deserves more than 5 or 6 - but 8 teams from the Big Ten!?!?!?!

It happens every year and it is disgusting.  We've played the ACC/Big Ten challange for how many years now?  The Big Ten has won how many times?  Oh, that's right: never.  The Big Ten disgusts me.  The eight or ninth best team in the ACC (Maryland) beat the best Big Ten team (MSU).  Stop the insanity.

Man, Louisville has such an easier run to the BigEast championship game than the rest of the teams (which I guess makes sense since they are the #1 seed, but the disparity between having to play Marq/Nova instead of Pitt/UConn in the semis is hugemongous).

Im surprised how theyre talking right now that even if Louisville wins the tourney, they wouldnt be a lock for a #1. Theyd be a lock IMO, regardless of what Oklahoma does.

Im sure it's bias and the annual floor pooping our basketball team does, but I think Penn St deserves a bid. Then again, theyre the 5th team in the Big 10 and not the 8th.

It doesn't happen every year.  Yep, Maryland beat MSU, quite handily.  I know because that's my team, alma mater.  But using that logic UNC got beat by Boston College who then turned around and lost to Harvard, #6 in their league.  So does that make them not a #1 seed?  I'm not saying the Big Ten deserves 8 teams but winning games early in the season (ACC/Big Ten Challenge) is far different from winning them in Feb/March.  Just ask Louisville, they lost to Western KY and some others but now they're poised for a possible #1 seed.  IMHO, ACC teams start strong and don't improve much, Big Ten teams (at least MSU) start more slowly and are much better by March.  Maybe the Big Ten gets the nod so much because we tend to play the old school bball, defense and rebounding, which supposedly wins championships.

Number of Teams in a given round of the NCAA tourny from each conference over the last four years.

CHAMPIONS
Sec      2
Big12     1
ACC       1

Final Two
SEC       2
Big 10    2
Big 12    1
ACC       1
Pac 10    1
CUSA     1

Final Four
SEC       3
Big 10    3
Pac 10    3
ACC       2
CUSA     2
Big 12    1
Big East  1
Colonial  1

Elite Eight
Pac 10    5
Big East  5
SEC       4
Big 12    4
Big 10    4
CUSA     4
ACC       3
Big East  1
Colonial  1
A10        1
Southern 1

I wouldn't exactly say the ACC and Big East have been very successful base on those results.

Here's the breakdown since 2000:

08- BT - 4; ACC - 4.
07- BT - 6; ACC - 7.
06- BT - 6; ACC - 4.
05- BT - 5; ACC - 5.
04- BT - 3; ACC - 6.
03- BT - 5; ACC - 4.
02- BT - 5; ACC - 4.
01- BT - 7; ACC - 6.
00- BT - 6; ACC - 3.

So, you're right it doesn't happen every year, just almost every year.  In the last 8 years there's been 2 ties, the ACC has gotten more bids twice, and the Big Ten has gotten more bids 5 times.

This end of year stuff really gets me going.  The Big Ten's performance in the tourney is embarassing.  Given that the ACC has won 3 national titles and the Big Ten 1 in the same time-frame leads me to believe that maybe the ACC is playing better ball at the end of the year.
Title: Re: The Official March Madness Thread
Post by: tower on Mar 12, 2009, 03:56 PM
Again, I'm not saying the Big Ten deserves all the bids they get.  My Spartans have made the most of theirs with numerous final fours and a Nat. Championship.  Ohio State made a good run with Oden and Co.  Wisconsin is one that always stings, they are almost always very solid in the Big Ten season but then don't have the horses for the NCAA.  Indiana with Kelvin (phone call) Samson made a mess there.  Purdue is similar to Wiscy.

BH, your numbers are fun, but based on too small of a sample.  Florida won the title in 06 and 07, so the SEC looks great.  Go back to at least the turn of the century.  When UNC wins this year the ACC will have won 4 of the last 9 titles.  Next year Maryland will give the ACC half of the titles won this century.  ;)

Yeah, those numbers don't reflect the current reality.  Who's going to contend the Big East won't make a showing this year? I'll go on the record to say the ACC will fare worse than both the Big East and Big Ten.  Davidson has never won a championship, does that mean they don't deserve in or that they are automatically worse than every team from the SEC?

This is an off season for the Big Ten.  However, their ugly ball does seem to get the job done in the middle rounds of the tourney even if they do not have the most talented teams.  If Luther Head hits one J against UNC in the final....  :'(

Nothing makes me happier than watching Bill Selfish go down!!! ;D

That said, I don't see any team really making a run other than MSU and maybe Purdue if they get their stuff together.

I posted about this the other day and totally agree.  I think it won't be most of a converstion once everything plays out. If they do win the Big East tournament they will have to beat wither Pitt or UConn and will have the most impressive resume of any team. They will have won the toughest conference in the country regular season and post.  We will be 9-1 against ranked teams including beating Pitt (perhaps twice) and perhaps UConn.  I know I'm looking ahead, but why people who get paid to analyze these things don't realize this is beyond me.  Let's say we beat Pitt in the finals, we will have beat them twice and won both championships in their conference, so why would they get a number one and not UofL?  It seems simple to me.

Because the people paid to "analyze" are in the entertainment biz.  I have to say, going back on my earlier words, Pitino has really done a great job of coaching this year.  I think this is a good team but he definitely has them playing very well and very balanced.

I'll take that bet.  Clemson and Wake are way better than people seem to think.  If the ACC fares better than both the Big Ten and Big East - then you change your avatar to the State Flag of Maryland for a month.  You tell me what you want mine to be.

Is that the same Clemson that just lost to 12-18 Georgia Tech?

QuoteBH, your numbers are fun, but based on too small of a sample.  Florida won the title in 06 and 07, so the SEC looks great.  Go back to at least the turn of the century.  When UNC wins this year the ACC will have won 4 of the last 9 titles.  Next year Maryland will give the ACC half of the titles won this century.  ;)

What I dont get is how Michigan, Penn State, and Minnesota all appear to be on the good side of the bubble, whereas Providence the #8 in the Big East appears to be out since they lost to Louisvul today

Pitt looks just about done....Been saying all year that if theyre going anywhere in the tourney, Blair needs to stay out of foul trouble. Every game theyve lost this year Blair has either fouled out or had 4 fouls, thus limiting his playing time below 30 minutes.

Not sure his exact PM tonight, but Id assume its under 30. I dont know why Dixon hasnt tried to address for the last month, especially since half of his fouls are stupid ones.

Well according to the idiot that is Digger Phelps its strength of schedule.  They called him out on that exact thing today and he said strength of schedule.  But then like I said, he's an idiot.  I don't want Michigan to make it but they did beat UCLA and Duke, both ranked pretty highly.  Minnesota had a really good run early but have been so-so later in the season.

Minnesota jacked up their record with crap out of conferences teams early, I really dont think they should be in.

I think Michigan should make it because of what you just said, and Penn State should as well since they won @Mich St and beat Illinois twice

What are you talking about Concordia-St. Paul is a beast!  Actually Minnesota's best win was at Louisville.

I gotta say, even before this loss, I wasn't sold on Clemson.  Now Wake, I believe, has some ability.

Well, often the tipping point is that 500 mark.  It seems to be the only thing that is going to keep Maryland out even with wins against UNC and MSU unless they beat Wake 2morrow.

Hey, the Gophers also took out North Dakota State who are goin' dancin' baby!!!

Yeah...I thought he actually got kicked off the team towards the beginning of the year, or maybe even last year, for being charged with domestic assault or rape or something, but I guess not

Hot damn!! I was watching the Pens game on tape and then tuned into the Cuse game live and watched thru 1 OT.

At that point, I had a period left to watch of the Pens game, so I figured lets just DVR that Big East game and tune in afterwards. Well I saw Sportscenter was on for another hour and a half, so I figured just press RecoRD and Im good.

45 minutes later - I tune in and watch some great BBall, but my recording times out right after 4OT..SOB@@@RT#@%$%RQW$RT  >:( >:( :o :o 8-) :( :( ;D >:( >:( :o

If Kentucky makes the Dance I am going to go into my bedroom, lie face down on my bed, and cuss into my pillow for about 12 seconds...then get on with my life.

Heels have a #1 seed in the South locked up, so theres no reason to play Lawson anyway.

Might actually be a good thing to play without him since it could work in the favor of a couple other guys getting hot possibly

And the 2nd half begins.

Louisville down by 2 now only.

IMO Scottie Reynolds is probably the most underrated player in the Big East, though Jeremy Hazell for Seton Hall isnt far behind

That's because you've been watching ESPN.  Big Ten has their own network called the Big Ten Network.  The ACC has their own too, ESPN.

2 things:

What's a coach's role in challenging if a 3 point goal was a 3 point goal? Maryland shot a 3 and coach K obviously challenged it, so the refs checked it, and it was a 3 anyway. But who decides to review those? Do the coaches get challenges like in football? I thought it was the refs call.

and, Duke is playing such tight defense, overplaying, etc... why not run the simple back door? I guess you need to be Princeton to play sound basketball like that.

OK

QuoteToney Douglas is a stud!

He is a great guard, that's for sure.  If Danny Green would've gotten more than 4 points we probably could've won.  But congrats to FSU.

I'm not too bummed because we still probably locked up a #1 seed in the south region AND Lawson should be back...let's get set for the REALLLL MAdddNEESS!!!

I think it's up to the Ref's most of the time (or so I thought)...but it is Coach K...so you never know how deep the refs are in his pocket.

And, yes, Maryland is completely tight tonight.  It's pretty easy to exploit dook's defense:  pound it inside and you'll win.

Oh well.  I just hope the 'noles cream dook tomorrow.  Then all will be right with the world.

AND, how about Michigan State losing?  tower?

SEC championship.

Mississippi State's Rick Stansbury is one of the great, under the radar coaches in America. He always gets more out of his talent, year after year, especially at tournamnet time. If he had the talent that Pearl has at UT, he'd have them in the top 25.

If I were a betting man, I'd take the Bulldogs tomorrow. Of course, I could be wrong and the line will be around 4-5 in UT's favor, but take the Bulldogs; just a hunch.

It's very difficult to win when you can't shoot.  And if the other team shoots well, it increases in difficulty.  This MSU team can beat anybody and I don't think a #2 seed hurts us which is likely what we'll be.  The problem we'll have is putting 6 games together because as we have shown we can throw out some total stinkers.  Hopefully the stinker doesn't come in the first few rounds!

Oh, and can I just say a big Fuck you to Digger Phelps?  Should have punched him in the face a couple years ago when I ran into him...was with my Mom and wife, that probably wouldn't have looked good.

Taking a shit in the Ohio State game and hating Digger Phelps are not directly related.  It just came to my mind because I heard him on the tv while typing.

I'd like to put him, Dickie V, Brent Musberger and Steve Lavin in the same bag that they stuffed Billy Packer into.

Not for one second in half 2 did I think FSU would pull it off.  That game had heartbreaker (for us) written all over it.  But, they are playing good ball.  I thought those few BAD turnovers were going to do us in.  TH played one hell of a game against some pretty good D.

These upsets are setting the pace for a nice tournament.  :D

Nice win for Louisville, though it looked like the Orange hit a wall in the 2nd half.

I thought the game would depend on what Terrence Williams did, and once again he had a great game and was probably the difference, especially considering his record setting 7 steals.

Im trying to think of a current or recent NBA player who has a similar game to him, but I cant. After looking at a couple recent drafts, Corey Brewer was the only guy I thought was somewhat similar. Anyone think of anybody?

Think the four #1's is going to end up

UNC
Pitt
Louisville
Memphis

I think UConn should be in over Memphis, but I think theyll give it to Memphis for some unknown reason.

Anyone else think theres a big dropoff after say, the #3 seeds?? Thats what it seems like to me

I think TWill's games resembles Dwayne Wade.  Neither have a great jumpshot but can make things happen all over the court including hitting some big threes and making spectacular steals when your team needs it.

Ok, so UofL won the Big East tourney and they didn't need to beat UConn or Pitt, so let's hear what the "expert bracketologists" have to say about their chances of being a number one now.  Idiots!

If Memphis gets it, that's a travesty.  They lost their big OOC games, but made a "miracle" run through C-USA...big whoop.

I'd pick a team that lost to Pitt over a team that beat Tulane.  Still, Uconn shot itself in the foot in the BE tournament, so Memphis would probably have to get it.

Yeah, I guess his all-around game and ability does have similarities with Wade. I didnt really think about him though because Williams has nowhere near Wade's offensive versatility, ability to takeover games with his nose for the nylon, or his scorer's mentality.

Williams is easily better defensively though

Win more games and you're in; or win your tournament; or schedule ANYONE out of conference; or don't lose to Rhode Island; or don't lose to freaking 15-17 Iowa the last game of the season! Don't blame other teams for stepping up. It's that simple.

Oh, I know thats why they didnt make the cut. Its their own fault and hopefully they rectify it for next year.

But even with their shitty OOC schedule, if even 1 of those teams didnt win their conference, theres a good chance Penn State wouldve made it. If 2 of them didnt, I think we definitely would have.

Im guessing Michigan made it because of wins over UCLA and Duke - which were OOC. But we basically did the equivalent by beating a 2 seed on the road (Mich St) and another 6 seed or better on the road (Illinois). Im almost positive Michigan didnt beat either of them, so its almost one in the same. Also, we did lose in the conference tourney to the team that won it, Purdue, and who right now is a bracket favorite to make it to the Sweet 16 according to peoples picks so far on ESPN.

Oh well

UConn
UNC
Villanova (My Sleeper to upset Pitt)
Michigan State

And 'youknowwho' to win it all.  That's all I'm gonna say about it for the rest of the Tournament.  I will not say UNC's name, I will not comment on any of their games.  I will only say something about it again when AND IF they win the Championship.

Good night, and good luck.

Nova can definitely beat Pitt if Blair gets in foul trouble. I actually liked what highlighter man kept saying about them playing zone to protect him, but not sure how much weaker that would make their overall defense.

Judging by how many people have jumped on the Lousiville bandwagon, Id call Michigan State a sleeper pick too. Whats your reasoning?

My original thought was my wishes that the teams that kept PSU out lose badly in the first round. Had they not pulled upsets, PSU wouldnt be in this situation.

I agree with your assessment of the weak OOC as to why they didnt make it - as the secondary reason that couldve kept them in even with said upsets.

My reply to your post did nothing to negate the fact that I still want all those teams that kept PSU out to lose.

I'd keep it secret if we were playing for cash, but since it's just for fun, I don't really care.

As far as my reasoning for MSU to be a sleeper, I just think back to Louisville at the beginning of the year.  They lost a few games they should've won (UNLV, Minnesota), got hot through their conference/conference tournament, and are a very good team.

HOWEVER, they only played Pitt and UConn once during conference play...both at home.  They aren't that reliable on the road, and thus, I don't think they'll have the fortitude to make the Final Four.

Michigan State has been remarkable since UNC stomped them.  They have great outside play and are poised to make the elite eight upset of Louisville.

That's my vague reason for picking them.

As for MSU, theyre one of the few higher ranked teams I havent really seen play, so I have a hard time judging what to do with them.

Izzo, like a few other coaches, always seems to get the most out of his teams, but I really have no clue about this team and how far theyll go. Seems to me its almost as likely theyll lose in the 2nd round to BC/USC as it is theyll go to the Elite 8, although based on his tourney history its probably closer to the latter, even if he doesnt still have this guy:

I think L'ville has a safe draw until they face MSU if the Spartans make it that far.  MSU can stay in any game for their D and rebounding but I think their offensive weaknesses can be exposed by certain team.  Anyone know how effective zones were against them this year.  I know the Illini always stuck m2m on them, most likely didn't even change it up in order to prevent MSU from pounding the offensive glass.

Zona and Dayton seem to be the popular 1st round upset picks.  I don't think 'Zone can just turn it on against a good Utah team.  Haven't seen Dayton so I have no idea.

West
Maybe a little too much love for the SEC but I'll take Miss. St. straight up against Washington.  I like Mizzou to get by Memphis.  I like UConn's draw.

East
Pitt will make it to the Final Four.  Heard Digger and Hubert picking both VCU and Wisconsin.  I like Wisconsin as the best of the 12s to pull it off but maybe it's my Big 10 bias.

South
I never thought at the beginning of the season that I'd think that UNC might be the weakest 1 seed.  Yet I don't see them challenged until 'Cuse or Oklahoma.  I don't think the Sooners can do it but 'Cuse might have the balance.

After last season, I'm so much more scared to call upsets.  Oh well, I'll take a UNC/Ill rematch and watch us get smoked.  Not that we'll even beat the Zags with our atrocious offense.  Nothing like having a three guard offense where none of them can create off of the dribble and 2 bigs that weigh less than me and are softer than my nipples on a hot summer day.

I'd love to see an Izzo/Pitino matchup, that would be really, really fun and interesting...such a constrast!  To answer your question, MSU has been inconsistent against a zone but they have been inconsistent overall so I'm not sure that's really important.  Ohio State put us out of the Big Ten tournament playing a zone but we got really good looks and just shot miserably. As you stated, MSU can beat anyone, but we can also lose to anyone because every 4-6 games we throw out a stinker.  Hopefully our stinker doesn't come in the first few rounds.

Wisconsin won't beat anyone good, they don't have any guns and the grind it out method that works in the Big Ten because of the reffing (fuck Ed Hightower) doesn't usually work in the NCAA.

Did anyone see Blake Griffin get thrown on his back yesterday?  That was such a hard foul...I'm surprised the kid that did it to him didn't get ejected.

Actually, I've seen numerous hard fouls on breakaways, under the basket etc.

The refs need to start calling this shit.

Yeah I did.  We got the full game because I live less than 5 minutes from Morgan.

I think the guy got ejected immediately actually.  Griffin was a great sport about it.  Hey, just another dude in B'more keeping it rizzle

Pittsburgh's performance today was eerily reminiscent of the 27-2, 1981 Depaul team (Mark Aguire's Sr. year) when as a 1 seed they "showed up" to play St Josephs and lost, after a 1st round bye. No jump in their step, lazy passes, flat footed, reaching for loose balls, little emotion. Man, I don't know if that's on the coach or the players, but if ETSU shoots FT's like they normally do, it's anybody's game at the end. Not sure what the hell they were doing, but they had the emotional energy of a wet sock.

Id put it more on the Pitt players seeing as how they had 18 turnovers and were offensively outrebounded 19-9 (which never happens to them).

Damn!!

I just noticed Cleveland State is beating Wake by 12 with a minute left in the 1st half...That'd be a HUGE upset

Works out well with my Arizona in the Sweet 16 pick as well  8-)

Mich St pulled away from Robert Morris a bit the last couple minutes, go into the break with an 11pt lead.

My over 122 bet on the Wisconsin-FSU game isnt looking too hot right now though  :-/

So can someone tell me why 20 point difference Mich St-Robert Morris is still on my TV screen despite Siena-OSU and Wisconsin-FSU being tight and Cleveland State looking for the upset vs. Wake!?!?!? What is wrong with you CBS!!!!!!!!

Luckily, I switched over to the computer. I shouldve done it earlier, but last year the NCAA.com feeds were fairly bad quality and also skipped/froze quite often. HOT DAMN have they improved it this year!!  :o I dont have an HDTV, but Id almost say my computer feed is better than my TV. I cant believe DirecTV still charges $80 for all the games when these feeds online are so good. Highly recommend  yinz all check it out tomorrow when its likely the game you want wont be on your TV.

Glad I made the switch because Cleveland State is just lighting the lamp. They look like a legit team. Cedric Jackson is supa gangsta.

Yeah, ACC def took a hit while the Big 10 IMO has been bumped up (there saying the Big 12 too, but I didnt expect any of those teams to likely lose besides maybe Texas). Maryland looked good and Memphis struggled, so there could be something there tomorrow though.

I only watched most of the 2nd half of that Cleveland State game, but they looked damn good on both sides.

I know, it helps when you're shooting uncontested! It went REAL bad after I wrote that last post...poor, POOR defense from UCLA in the first half...they're not out, but they've dug themselves a deep hole against a good team that's playing REALLY well.

Oh yeah, it's over... :'(

And I picked UCLA headdy!  ;D This IS the same Villanova team that had their hands full with American on Thursday, right? Same court, right? I'm pretty sure that Villanova didn't average 90+ pts a game this season (like they'll probably end up doing here), I'm pretty sure it was at least 15-20 less. This is just a game where Nova played better than they are, and UCLA played worse than they are. UCLA, under Howland, is generally a well coached, strong defensive team, with great athletes, and those types of teams ALWAYS have a chance in this tournament. Too bad they didn't play defense today like a Howland coached team, and had like 20 fucking tournovers...  >:(
Title: Re: The Official March Madness Thread

Memphis- 89  Maryland- 70

Greivis Vasquez of Maryland: "If Memphis played in the ACC Conference, they'd have a losing record in the league. They'd probably win all of their games outside the league and have a losing record in the league. The ACC is too tough."

hmmmmm, I wonder if that goes for Cleveland State, too?  ;D

Did he miss the fact that Memphis beat Gonzaga by 18 at Gonzaga while the Terps lost to Gonzaga by 22 at home? Watching Memphis and Maryland, it's pretty obvious who has the better team (That's why Vegas has Memphis -10). Vasquez should focus on playing basketball rather than pining philosophical about the merits of Tiger basketball.

Memphis probably wouldn't win the ACC and they definently wouldn't be on the lower tier of ACC teams. What a silly thing to say.

Yeah, would've been nice if USC pulled that off, and they might have had Taj Gibson not fouled out and only had 3 points. Certainly wouldve helped my bracket out a lot since having WVU in the Elite 8 killed me and not only would I have gained ground since I picked USC, but that would keep some points out of all your greasy Spartan picking mitts.

Apparently being the only person having Arizona in the Sweet 16 gave me a nice boost though  8-) I certainly wouldnt want to be Louisville right now, thats a dangerous matchup.

I typically find the 2nd round to be the least interesting of all the rounds. Not too many upsets or great matchups, and it doesnt have the hype/excitement of the 1st round, or the marquee matchups of the 2nd round.

Bring on the Sweet 16 !!!

Conference  /  Teams In  /  Teams Left  /  Record  /  Win. Perc.

Big East / 7 / 5 / 11-2 / 846%
Big XII  / 6 / 3 /  9-3  / 750%
Atla 10  / 3 / 1 /  3-2  / 600%
BIG 10  / 7 / 2 /  6-5  / 545%
PAC 10  / 6 / 1 /  6-5  / 545%
ACC      / 7 / 2 /  5-5  / 500%
Horizon  / 2 / 0 /  1-2  / 333%
SEC       / 3 / 0 /  1-3  / 250%
Mnt Wst  / 2 / 0 /  0-2  / 000%

So the Big East so far has held strong, the Big 12 has performed admirably and outside of Duke and NC, the ACC has been pretty BLAH.

Are we ready for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge...March version?  Like I've posted...the one in November is meaningless and ACC teams don't tend to get better over the season like Big Ten teams do.  Their domination in the early season "Challenge" seems like a faint memory and I don't think Duke makes it past the next round and UNC better look out, Gonzaga can score and I doubt they'll pull sleeping fits like LSU did.

Purdue will struggle with UConn but I like MSU's chances against a Kansas team that we've already beaten soundly.
Title: Re: The Official March Madness Thread
Post by: primushead on Mar 23, 2009, 06:06 PM
I'm worried less about Gonzaga than I was about LSU.  I knew LSU was big and could hit some three's.  That's all that kept them with us--all they did was jack up three's in the last 15 minutes and 4 or 5 just happened to go in.

That said, Gonzaga is smaller than LSU, so we should be able to penetrate more.

AND they like to play up tempo...which fits perfectly with the heels.  If Lawson is back to 80/90% we'll be fine.

And I do see dook being knocked out by 'Nova.  Which would be lovely.

The ACC might have one more team in the final four or championship game when it's all said and done (and they may not).  But my point is that in the early season when people were giving the Big Ten shit for not being overly competitive in that Challenge I maintain that the end of the season will show vastly different results, and it has...a dead heat.

Big Ten was actually supposed to be down this year but the SEC's failings I think helped more of their team's get in the tourney.  The best news for the Big Ten is that I think the all Big Ten team is also all sophomores, could be interesting in a couple of years, eh?

Great!  Bank on Tyler's Senior Year.

Think of it as James Worthy's Junior Year.  I hope it will be similiar.

I met Worthy 2x as a kid in LA.  That was of course prior to his "sole" indiscretion with an escort service. ;)  Fastest man on the wing and fastest bball player I've seen until Lebron James.  Ahh the first step

I definitely like Nova +2 and also like Mizzou, but Im torn on that Purdue spread. I think UConn can once again dominate another game, but maybe the whole recruiting scandal thing a day earlier gets in their heads?!

So no bet on Pitt/Xavier? I think Pitt will win, but it really rides on Blair and staying out of foul trouble. I think Xavier coach/former Pitt player Sean Miller is a better strategic/in-game coach than Jamie Dixon and even has a history of getting big men in foul trouble (see Oden 2007 when they almost beat OSU), plus 2 Elite 8 appearances. I think it really all comes down to Blair playing 35+ minutes.

I took Xavier +7

Ive never really liked Calhoun, although when I was 12 I became a UConn fan because I liked Ray Allen's game, and then even moreso in '99 with that team and Rip Hamilton remains 1 of my favorite players going.

I dont like Calhoun, but I've liked a lot of UConn players/teams. Maybe thats why I picked them to win it all this year, I like their squad  ;D

Pitt not looking so hot  :-/

I thought going in it would depend on Blair staying out of foul trouble and putting up at least a double-double, and which good rebounding team (Pitt at +10 and X at +8 on the season) would win that battle.

Both things certainly went Xavier's way in the first half

QuoteYeah, what is up with Pitt? :o

Apparently what theyve been doing lately - standing up and delivering in crunch time.

That 3 by Fields with 50 seconds left was the definition of Bill Raftery's ONIONS!!

Huge second half by Blair, mostly on the boards with 13 in that half and 8 points.

...tough decision now on which of these games to watch. I expect both to be exciting games that come down to the last couple minutes.

Mizzou is impressive. This is the first time Ive seen them play and I like their style. I cant remember if this was the style Mike Anderson had his team play with when he was at UAB, but if it was, its apparent why that team was is the NCAA's almost every year.

I can see why a good amount of people were saying Mizzou would give Memphis trouble.

Should be a good 2nd half

Well, an interesting first half of the Sweet 16.  I know there are some Tigers fans around here that are more knowledgeable about them but I felt good about this team and have them going to the Final Four.  I knew they had the depth and energy to play with Memphis for 40 minutes.  Now I wish I just took them straight up.

As for Duke, expected though not such a crazy differential.

I never made a play on Pitt and I'm glad I didn't.  I still didn't have a read on the game.  Man I love Levance Fields.  Me being a short, stocky PG growing up, much love. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Ehhh, Purdue actually played well I thought but just didn't have what it took down low.

So for 2morrow my picks:

UNC -8.5
MSU -1.5
Cuse +1
Zona +9

Thoughts?

Well, I went 3 for 3 tonight with the UCONN game being the only 1 I didnt bet on.

Tomorrow's games lines dont look near as appealing to me.

I was going to take Oklahoma -1, but since I picked them for the Elite 8 in my brackets, Im thinking about taking the Orange so no matter who wins, I wont be too pissed. I realize Oklahoma is basically a 1 man team, but I dont see Cuse stopping Griffin and IMO its hard going into a game knowing youre in reality down 25 points already.

Arizona is intriguing, but they have that rookie coach and I think if you give Pitino 5 days to gameplan, it wont end up good if you're not as good as his team. I think that game ends up right around the spread with Louisville winning by 8-12 points.

Kansas/MSU I have no idea on. I doubted Kansas but theyve looked good thus far, and MSU reminds me of Pitt with their play. Should be a close, low scoring game that either team could win. I might go with Kansas and a hot Aldrich though.

Look at what I said for the Louisville game, and its almost ditto for UNC/Zags - except more because of the player's talent discrepancy than the coaches. I cant see Zags winning this, but I can see them making it interesting late after UNC was up big most of the game (kind of like Mizzou/Memphis). I dont think Gonzaga has the firepower to hang, but its still a big spread.

Yeah, I didnt make a pick pretty much because like I said, for the most part, I dont like these spreads   ;D

Well, I like the Orange/Sooner and MSU/Kansas spreads because tight spreads can obviously go either way. I definitely havent seen enough of the latter teams though, and IMO Syracuse being hot vs. Oklahoma having the dominant POY basically trump each other. So Im having trouble picking a team there if I do make a bet.

I wouldnt touch those other spread though. They scream me losing money because some fucker got fouled in an 8 point game with 1.3 seconds left, he sinks them, and I lose.

Well, this is the most talented and balanced Zags team I've seen.  That said, I'm not sure they have the inside toughness or depth to hang for 20+ minutes.  Like I felt with Pitt tonight (incorrectly so), I feel like UNC will have their A game tomorrow or tonight I guess.  Damn I hate rooting for the Heels >:(

Yeah, neither of those scenarios I wouldve expected to transpire.

I love seeing Coach Hitler and his fruity nazis get blown out as well. Who wouldve though a #2 seed Duke team would be held to 50 points?!

As soon as I saw the bracket, I thought the 3 seeds looked tougher overall because Duke and Mich St seemed like weak 2 seeds whereas all of the 3 seeds seemed legit.

Unless youre a gambling man, I wouldnt worry at all about the Zags tomorrow. It will be interesting seeing how Lawson's health is though

Title: Re: The Official March Madness Thread

what a chokejob by Kansas. Makes sense though since they apparently have nobody besides Collins and Aldrich.

kudos to Kalin Lucas though. Just like Fields hitting that 3 last night, I think his And 1 sealed a game that otherwise they probably wouldve lost if he doesnt hit it. Plus going 7/7 from the line over the last minute doesnt hurt

MSU ruined another perfect betting night though. Sooners at -1 felt too good too pass up, and it turned out so. After seeing both Louisville an Oklahoma dominate their games, I felt comfortable taking UNC at -8 and that held true. I thought at worst Kansas +2 was going to en up a push until there was like 20 seconds left. Damnit  >:(

Sooners/Heels should be a barnburner

Lousiville getting that overall #1 is looking real good for them because IMO theyre the only team I think has a very slim chance of losing and not getting to the Final 4. Sorry tower.

Dick and Digger are both idiots that can't make a solid analysis between them half the time.  Dick is so partial to the Heels he couldn't help but pick them.  Digger picked against MSU again which makes my day.  He's still bitter MSU put his #1 seed Notre Who? out  of the '79 tourney.

I used to respect Jay Bilas more but man he was on the Hansbrough bandwagon so hard last year it was silly.  The guy plays hard and I respect that but don't make it more than what it is!

Im liking the Pitt game so far. Even when they were down by 10, I wasnt concerned because they were getting theirs on the offensive side an looked good.

Should be a close game, but Im not sure in this situation Nova can hang the whole 40 minutes.

DeJuan Blair, Sam Young, an Levance Fields all seem to be on their game. Pitt is tough to beat when that happens

I think Griffin will out stats-sheet Tyler because, well, he is a beast.  With our defense, I see him putting 25/10 against us, but if we play like we did last night, I think we'll pull it out.

Me too. Me thinks the Mempis game was "too easy" and that fucked with their psyche. They just couldn't seem to ever be able to hit 5th gear. And UConn is good and hit the FT's down the stretch.

Yeah, UConn played a great game, I think I heard they shot 70% in the first half.   We hung tough, but just didn't quite have enough in the tank.  I thought we had them right were we wanted them with about 13 minutes left.  UConn was breathing heavy, tugging on their shorts, and we went up by one.   Then there was a long tv timeout, another timeout, and several long free throw stops that really slowed the the game back down at the worst time.   Either way, UConn was very impressive and deserved to win.   I just wanted ONE MORE WIN, to get our first Final 4.  However it was a really fun year, I won't forget.

I thought when Pitino said his team had their "egos in check", after showing T Will dancing and Sosa posing for the camera after a Sweet 16 win over Arizona, that they might be in trouble.

Spartans D, pretty awesome. But that was a team win from the head coach to the bench, Louisville got beat.

I watched the game with a diehard UL fan and his response...Pitino got outcoached.  Obviously a great game from MSU...I always wanted to see how a Pitino team would fare against an Izzo defense, I couldn't be more pleased.  I think Pitino got a lot out of his team this year but I  do maintain that he runs a high risk/high reward system...when it works it pays big but when it doesn't there aren't a lot of options.

Couldn't be happier for Travis Walton, he's worked on his jumper and made himself into a guy who needs to be guarded.  I have such a man-crush on Izzo, words can't explain.

That would be just fine with me as well however we both have lots of work to do to get there on Monday.  I'd like to get another shot at UNC with a healthy Suton, added experience under our belt, and an Izzo game plan that would benefit from playing you once.  That being said, I'm concerned about getting past UConn...maybe I'll send Calhoun a cell phone...
Title: Re: The Official March Madness Thread

Well I guess I was off on MSU not having a chance against Lousiville. They def impressed and Suton was huge. I dont know if it was their D or not, but them holding T-Will and Samuels to what I can remember like 2 points was definitely the difference. Williams was solid on the boards and assists, but Lousiville lives and dies with him scoring.

I cant see Nova beating UNC, they have too much depth and star power. Id expect UCONN to beat MSU, but if MSU can take Lousiville off their game like that, they can do it to UCONN.

IMO, Ty Lawson should be the #1 overall pick in the draft, and Blake Griffin should be #2. If I remember correctly, a lot of people were saying Griffin won't be able to translate his game to the pros, kind of like Hansbrough. I think they're crazy. I think Griffin will be a borderline all star in the NBA for a long time.

What Grinds My Gears:

Up here in ACC/Big East Country, everyone shits on the Big Ten and bad, boring basketball.  I get it.  Recently, the Big Ten has not recruited the top talent in the country but their style has succeeded to some extent in the tourney over the last decade.  What bothers me is that the sports talking head bash it as slow, boring b'ball based on defense and rebounding.  These same people worship the Ravens for their tough D and running game.  What gives? >:(
Title: Re: The Official March Madness Thread
Post by: tower on Mar 30, 2009, 09:21 AM
They're talking heads, that's what gives.

Everyone from Dickhead and Dugger to the CBS announcers, to the panel on Sports Reporters all kept referring to MSU's slow down style.  MSU wants to run, run, run...notice how quickly we get the ball inbounds after a made shot.  A few of the Big Ten teams want to slow it down like Wisconsin but not all.  The refs in the Big Ten contribute (Hightower! Where's he been all tourney?) by calling and stopping the game repeatedly.  MSU can't wait to get out of the Big Ten for reasons that were shown yesterday v. Louisville.  We ran when we could but we also can be patient and run offensive sets.

One thing that was mentioned after the game was that we "out toughed" Louisville and I agree with that.  Louisville has good players and Pitino is a good coach but I don't know that they're particularly tough and when it ain't easy and fun they seemed to respond by shrinking and quitting.  Still can't believe Pitino didn't make more adjustments at halftime trying to get T-will more involved.  Now nobody gives us a chance against UConn even though they've lost twice to Pitt who Pitino said is very much like MSU, hmmm.

How bad a hire would Calipari be for UK...that guy ain't a top level coach.  He's a recruiter but can't coach his way out of a paper sack.  If he has to go against good competition regularly he'll be lucky to be 20 wins every year.  The dribble-drive offense is akin to rolling the ball out and to say they were the best defensive team is just silly.  They played in C-USA which contains the School for the Blind I think.

Still I would find it mildly entertaining being no fan of UK or UL but living in Louisville.

You cant be serious. There's a few coaches who are strategically better than him (and Izzo is 1 of them), but look at the talent he's acquired at Memphis, let alone Marcus Camby at dot on the map UMass. Put him at Kentucky, and he's annually getting the talent that Roy Williams and Jim Calhoun get and then some.

If you dont think he could coach a 20 win team 9 out of 10 years in the SEC, you're crazy. He'd instantly be the best coach in the SEC

I'm serious, he's a great recruiter of talent but not so ethical.  He left UMASS in a hurry with sanctions to follow.  That Final Four in 96 has been vacated due to violations with aforementioned Camby.  With the talent he recruits he does win some games but not because of coaching, sheer talent.  But when the going get's rough the character issue will rear its head.  It won't bother me if he gets the job, I'm not a UK fan but I do think it's a terrible hire.  This is NOT the guy to lead UK back to the national elite.

Marcus Camby accepted 28K from sports agents at UMass, that had nothing to do with Calipari.

and with all due respect, if he can lead Memphis back to the national elite, Memphis, he can do it at Kentucky. The question is can he get his stars to stay in college and not jump to the NBA.

To say he's a "recruiter" and not a coach is like saying he drinks coffee but he's not a coffee drinker. You can't be a coach without being a recruiter, it's part of the job description.

Sounds to me like you got some beef with the Pitinos and Caliparis of the world. You're not Greek, are you?  ;) You're not a Bobby Knight fan by any chance, are you?

Yea but some guys recruit and coach and graduate players and aren't slimy.  Camby is the kind of character he recruits and that's not good.

Not Greek, just don't care for slick cats.  Pitino apparently dislikes Calipari, I'd guess because he's a Pitino wannabe.  But Pitino is twice the coach Calipari is.

I'll stand by my word, Calipari is a bad hire for UK...but go ahead, I don't mind.

On December 16, 2006, Camby was involved in the infamous Knicks-Nuggets brawl.

On June 14, 1997, Camby was arrested on charges of marijuana possession in South Windsor, Connecticut after police stopped him for a driving offense.[23] On July 1, 1997, he agreed to a plea deal that required him to complete 16 hours of community service, in exchange for dismissal of the drug charge. Charges against Camby were dropped after he fulfilled the community service.

I'm not saying he's a terrible guy but Calipari deals in recruiting with talent first, character second.  He's shady and brings baggage and drama.  See this article http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20090331/COLUMNISTS01/903310363.  I'm not saying Izzo should (or would) go to UK or that Izzo hasn't had a player or two have some off-court troubles but Calipari, IMHO, is not a quailty hire.

Your right, he probably would get 20 wins and maybe I made an overstatement but against quality competition I don't think he's your guy to take or return you to elite level consistently.  Plus he's shady...you think IU regrets hiring Samson?  I see it as a similar situation although Calipari is a better recruiter probably.

If Calipari had some sheet of allegations and past occurrences of using bad judgement, then I might agree with you, but he doesn't. You sort of hate him based on appearance and speculation and not b/c of anything he has really done.

Were there some kind of extenuating circumstances?

Hey man, you know that you can go to other places on the internet other than the MMJ forum, right? You should look into this brand new site called Wikipedia. Seriously. You can just type in someone's name and if they are famous enough you'll get their bio. I typed in Jason Williams (Jay) and got all sorts of information. In regards to his NBA career, there was this:

In the summer of 2006, Williams impressed scouts with his recovery efforts. On September 28, 2006, the New Jersey Nets announced that the organization had signed Williams to a non-guaranteed contract, giving the guard the opportunity to play for his hometown team. However, on October 22, Williams was released.

On December 30, 2006, Williams was waived by the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League due to injury.

Williams has since announced that he has no plans at the moment to resume his basketball career. He is currently working for 24 Hour Fitness, doing motivational speaking and worked as an analyst on CBS College Sports Network during the course of the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

Most recently, Williams has been employed by ESPN as an analyst for men's college basketball telecasts.

So, instead of coming here and asking questions that sometimes never get answered (how inconsiderate!) you should go to Wikipedia!

Have a good one!  :)

I think UConn thought they were tough but we out-toughed them and outhustled them.

I think if Villanova shoots reasonably well they'll win tonight but either way, I'd love another shot at UNC with us healthy and playing well or if we get Villanova that would mean (if we win) three Big East teams disposed of.

Well, tower.

Here it goes.

Monday night.  You have a healthy team (AND Goran Suton) to go against the team that won in the same state.  In the same city.  In the same venue...

WHOA!! Drama, abound!

I have so much more respect for Izzo after this season.  He's done great and I truly think this will be an epic matchup.

Good luck!  And may the better team win.

Yep, looking forward to it...this team is definitely different than the one from earlier in the season.  Raymar Morgan has to show up again like last night and I'm not convinced he'll do that.  Villanova and OK shot so poorly from three that they didn't stand a chance.  Not that I think we'll be jacking up a bunch of threes but you can't go 4 for 25 or whatever Villanova did against a team that clearly can score.

Izzo will have a defensive gameplan in place but we'll see if MSU can follow it like they have the last two games.  I'm not concerned about the inside play but the perimeter shooting that UNC brings.  If we can rebound like I think we will we should be able to get second chance points and I also think we'll run when we can and set it up when we can.  Of course UNC will run which means that if we send 4 to the glass and don't board and score we may be in trouble.  We had like 22 turnovers in the first game and we seem to have improved in that area.  Some were forced but others were just awful and unforced.  Gonna be a great game to watch and I'm so impressed with what Izzo has these kids doing.

I saw a quote from him where he felt like he lost his way a few years ago with some one and dones and not the greatest character kids.  He said he was lured into recruiting talent over toughness and that he's gone back to toughness...it shows.  I don't think there's a single McDonalds All-American on the starting lineup...quite a contrast with most of the other teams at this level.

Why the fuk didn't UCONN throw any three pointers? Not one single three pointer when they needed it most. They deserved to be out, and Mich St played a great game, they are just too fast.

Do I get the Vegas line?

No vegas lines.  We'll keep it simple.  If MSU wins, I'll put an avatar of your choice up and vice versa.

Sure, just don't ask me to put an avatar of Ed Hightower up please.  Anyone else notice his conspicuous absence.  And if he shows up tonight to officiate all bets are off.

Went with Michigan State +8

I dont see UNC getting near as many wide open 3's vs. MSU as they did in the Nova game, not to mention converting 50% of them.

Difference in the game will be if MSU's bench has significant contributions. They need that to win. They also probably need Suton to not send his twin to play in the game like he did saturday where he only attempted 5 shots and got 4 points

Go Spartans

Suton didn't have to score against UConn, it wasn't a part of the gameplan.  He does have to score tonight though and I think he will.

I've said all along, a good shooting team that plays D will beat UNC, hope I'm right and I hope it's my Spartans.  My last chance to be right on that one.

Yeah, everyone was saying for the UCONN game the key was Thabeet vs. Suton and how that would affect UCONNs D. I dont know why it may have gameplan to not center around Suton, but IMO it was probably because even if he was shooting outside, that wasnt going to bring the key their defense Thabeet out there with him and allow their defense to be more vulnerable.

Against UNC though, I could see him pulling Thompson or Hansbrough away from the basket, which could really help MSU to get some less contested shots close.

Suton has never been the center of our offense, he takes what's available which really is true of all of our players, there's not one guy who's a scorer.  The idiots on tv just talked about it because Suton had a big first half v. Louisville.  Thabeet was never going to guard Suton because he steps outside, he was guarding Roe or whoever else we put on the block.

That dude making the layup for Wisconsin was the Pontiac Game Changing Performance or the tourney?! Are you kidding me???

Apparently no one else cared about that except people in Wisconsin  ;D

It has to be Scottie Reynolds going down the court and getting to the rim and knocking off Pitt with .5 seconds left, or Kalin Lucas' And 1 that probably won them the Kansas game.

My brain tells me this is over, but then I think about UNC's meltdown in 2007 with much of the same cast vs. Georgetown in the Elite 8, where the lead was a similar amount but I think with only 10 minutes left.

Just saying it could happen again, but I think this Heels team is determined.

I was hoping this game would be close, salvaging somewhat one of my least favourite and compelling tournaments in recent memory. I hope for entertainment sake that MSU starts to light it up in the 2nd half.

Goddamit is Bird an ugly mother. He's never been a GQ model, but man, pull back to at least a medium shot, cameraman.

Congrats as well..I wouldve rather seen them play Pitt, UConn, or Louisville with UNC at their best. Mich St got crushed earlier in the year and looked just as overmatched tonight.

The way UNC played in the tourney though, its hard to believe they lost more than 1 game with Lawson in the lineup, if that.

Anyone else surprised Ellington got MOP of the Final 4?!!?  :o

I thought Lawson wouldve been a lock - I mean shit, he set the steals record for a game in the tourney, in the championship game nonetheless, and Id say they converted at least 6 of those - which was basically the difference in the game. Not to mention Lawson was the leading scorer of the Final 4 game vs. Nova with 22pts, 7rebounds, 8 assists. He's the leading scorer of the championship game with 21pts, 4rebounds, 6-to-1 assists to TO ratio, and 8steals in the championship game. Im just totally befuddled at how he didnt get the MOP of the Final 4

But if he didnt get it, then I thought Hansbrough would as the sentimental choice. He was solid with 18pts in both games and 11 and 7rebounds respectively. His point totals were nearly the same as Ellington.

How Ellington got it is beyond me. The voter must be from Philly  ;D

2nd time the NCAA has puzzled me tonight

Wow, well we got overwhelmed in the first 5 minutes and while I don't think we played great D throughout UNC was hitting everything and a few more and we clearly were not.  I'm surprised we didn't pound it inside a bit more, I think we settled for jumpers when we could have scored inside.  Turnovers killed us and Ty Lawson was a world beater tonight, he looked great.  I'm still a bit shocked that UNC didn't run into a team that shot the ball really well.  OK, Villanova, and MSU all shot miserably and while I don't think its the UNC defense (plenty of open looks) it must be something to do with the way they speed you up, that's all I can figure.

All in all, I'm pleased with the MSU season, if not the final game and assuming Lucas doesn't go pro (which he shouldn't) we should be pretty damn good next year too.  3G, let me know what I'm "proudly" displaying.  Congrats on your National Champeenship.

Way to go Heels!!!!  2ND CHAMPIONSHIP IN 5 YEARS!!!

Not a bad stretch right there.

Yes, tower, I thought MSU didn't play up to their potential.  They looked a little tight out there, and I think those first few turnovers they had might've shaken their confidence a little.  Still, great season by both teams.

How bout this for the new avatar?   :D

i gotta say I was pretty disappointed with the tourney this year.  Very few upsets, hardly any buzz beaters, and no really great, memorable games.  The team eerybody thought would win when the season began didn't really get tested and rolled their way through.  I shouldn't have picked any upsets in my bracket.  The person who won our work poll did that.  Damn shame.

And, yes, I am bitter that UofL lost the way it did.

Congrats, GGG.  Nice avatar, Tower.

I agree, but I dont think it matters if there are upsets or not, just if the games are competitive and entertaining. Pitt/Nova was a great game and wouldve been no matter which team won, but after that you gotta think about it.

And not only werent there many close games, there were a ton of blowouts.

Really last years tourney wasnt very good either but thats all forgotten because the championship game was great.

Not sure I agree with the guy but he picks MSU as #1 for 2009.  We'll have to find a center to be even close to that but with a lot of returning guards/wings/forwards we "should" be a force to be reckoned with.  We do have a couple Bigs coming in but you can't count on freshmen.
