My parents are headed to Memphis for a few days on vacation...and, of course, they're dropping by Graceland. Any advice for them? Are there any cool 'off the beaten path' spots you know of?
Thank you very much... :)
Man, that cat hasnt been around too much lately.
Hopefully he comes back around sometime soon :)
Bummer!
Just thought I'd try and entice him to post. :'(
Sorry to jump in on this dragonboy call out. I was in Memphis recently, so I'll add my two cents, if that's ok?
Your folks should do the Sun Records Studio tour and seeing the Civil Rights Museum is a must. Beale Street is overrated, but there's some good food there and the odd good blues club. They should check out the duck walk at the wonderful Peabody Hotel. Graceland is very well run, but the area around Graceland couldn't be more tacky. Other than that, downtown Memphis is empty and can be pretty scary, so stick to the tourist areas.
Lot's of good stuff going on in the month of May.

Jaimoe's post is right on.
you know, the new Redbirds Stadium (AAA) is pretty awesome, for minor league baseball. It's downtown so you get a feel and flavor of the city.

The tourists love The Rendevous for BBQ

but the locals don't go there. My buddy has lived there for 15 years and goes to Central BBQ, and I'm a witness to that!

The Pink Palace Museum is also on Central

Central is towards Cooper/Young which is the "hipster" district, if your parents can walk elbow to elbow with the patchouli/dreads people

As for Graceland, there's nothing really to do around Graceland, so I wouldn't plan to park and stroll the blocks, it's a pretty rough part of town.
They could also go see Al Green preach

Let me know if they're into thrift store shopping b/c I can hook you up on that end, although the neighborhoods are rough. You'd want to "dress down".
Sweet, I'll pass this along.
Thanks folks!
It all started when that stupid person posted pics of Cindy Crawford's young child on the current crush thread! >:(
Uh, apparently it's "OK to Return to the Forum Day." The world is rejoicing due to my return. I also see K here. It'll be o.k. I'm stuck tonight, so I've been reviewing the month I've missed - your input is needed.
DB is good.

Hey Gregg! Sorry I couldn't help out but it looks like Jaimoe had you covered. I've only been the once (am going again this summer, though!)
Did they go already? Like J said, Sun Studios is a must. That & (again, like J said) downtown/Beale St. is pretty scary @ night.
If anyone ever stays @ the HeartBreak Hotel, it's worth paying that little bit extra for the suites - they're much nicer.
Nice to see you back!!! :)
Hey DB!
Thanks guys! I miss the good people here. Emphasis on good...
BUMP!!
Come out come out wherever you are :'( :'( :'(
Yes, he is missed.
Whoever owns this van lives in Portland and must live in the neighborhood I work in because I see it parked on the side streets all the time. Every time I see it, I think of DB....

i thought he was visiting the states soon---? maybe that's where he is..
His trip to Vegas is in August. He's got tickets to see Tom Jones, and I think Kings of Leon with the Whigs.
