Mine are in genres & favourites (Elvis, MMJ, Beatles, Stones, Who, Neil Young, Willie, Johnny etc all have their own shelves)
My CDs shelves have become a jumbled mess though & I'm thinking of alphabetizing them this week.
So how do you categorize your music & what are the benefits of your system? ;)
A-Z.
My favourites are at the top of my shelves (Tom Waits, Neil Young, MMJ, Pavement, etc.), then the rest is alphabetized. Side-projects and solo works are filed alongside the artist/group.
Invite me over db, I love to alphabetize.
I guess it looks as if you're reorganizing your records. What is this though? Chronological?
No...
Not alphabetical...
Nope...
What?
Autobiographical.
No fucking way.

You missed an artist, I fixed it for you ;)
It's going to be an all-day-job, that's for sure. 2 votes for A-Z.
I've always thought A-Z would be fine if you know what you're looking for but I often find myself going to my shelves in the mood for something (Jazz, Hip-Hop, something quiet etc) but not knowing who or what I want to listen to until I browse through & that's why genres have worked well for me up until now...

Keep your favourites in their own section, too. Then you'll really be set.
As far as my CD books go, its kind of a mix of everything except alphabetical.
I typically have my favorite stuff towards the front of the book. I have 1 book for hip hop and jazz, 1 for classic rock and blues and some other random stuff, 1 for basically music from the 90's-present, and 1 full of live phish shows.
Its too hard to alphabetize a book because you have to totally shift a bunch of CD's too often, but I would think it would be much easier to do it on a shelf since you can just keep sliding them one way or the other
I guess I have mine by favorites, degree of importance in my life (past & present) and I also have some placed by genre. My top 4 shelves never get switched around but the rest I change from time to time....kind of hard to explain but it makes sense too me.
It's a running joke to switch spots on a few of my cd's and see how long it takes me to notice!
I have around 800 CD's and I have always been tempted to organize them according to color. Start with red and go to violet.
It would be cool.

Wow...I feel lame or is anyone not admitting it. I've ripped all my CD's to a hard drive organized by band than hit the wonderful sort button ::) My cds and cases sit in boxes in storage in my attic.
But all my CD's and records are alphabetized. So unoriginal but I think I wouldn't be able to find crap if it was sorted by genre or color. Color would be kinda tough with vinyl [smiley=bath.gif]
Plus I'm moving to a smaller apartment and I'm not sure I'd know where to put 10gbs of MMJ burned onto CDs ;D
What would be sweet would be to have a wheel to spin with CDs in sleeves and you play the one that hits the arrow.

Man, I haven't organized CDs since I lost my when collection in a smash-and-grab car window-breaking about three years. I had everything that meant anything to me in this big 200 CD wallet at that point, and the thing was sort of ridiculous. One of those systems of organization that was best left unquestioned, though things definitely belonged in place. I remember I had more than a few pages that were organized by color, a few by feel, a LOT were organized by My Morning Jacket... any band I had more than one of were always next to each other. Good Lord, this is way before I found eMusic.
That said, my vote goes for genre then alphabetical. More importantly, nobody's judging what you do, so if you want to go more by feel than technical genre, I would do that. This is a no-rules game, a man's album organization, and you've gotta get it in there the way it feels best (exactly what she said) even if you have to break your own rules a few times in the process.

Sorry to hear that about the discs man. Not to go too off topic but I basically lost my entire hip hop collection which was about 125 discs about 7 years ago in a smash and grab also. I never leave stuff in my car but I had just gotten home from a trip to Chicago by car back to Maryland and I was too lazy and tired to empty my entire car before going to bed. What are the chances that the only time you leave a CD book sitting in the car that it is taken. I guess pretty good. :'(
Pop, rock, folk are A-Z, and then a separate A-Z section for jazz, blues and country. However, I have a guitar-shaped CD stand that's near my stereo for quick, high rotation access.

Haha, funny thing is, I used to be pretty anti-downloading for fidelity purposes. I guess I needed someone to change my mind for me? Now I've only got physical copies of say, 10% of my music? The other week I realized that, since I'm comfortable not owning physical backups of my music, I'm also comfortable trading the CDs I have in for cash at the local music shop. Made a nice $80 the other week doing so!
after a few tries at other ways to organise them all, i've kind of settled on organising my cds by country.... within that, albums are sorted by artist, then artists who have some relation to each other are next to each other... same with countries (sweden, norway, denmark are all next to each other for example)
so: within the US, mmj is next to andrew bird (i got onto ab through lovely mmj forum people), ab is next to wilco (chicago connection), various ny bands are together... similarly tricky is next to massive attack, portishead, (bristol), elbow is next to doves, happy mondays, new order, oasis (manchester) etc
is a little convoluted, but i find it easy to organise, and easy to find stuff...
All mixed up in a drawer and compartments in my vehicles... ;)

That is pretty much what I did. I went to almost strictly digital for space reasons plus having all my tunes on one HD makes it easy say when there is a fire, tornado, psycho stalker/killer and I need to move to the safe room.
My cd's are in stacks with no order at all (I plan on fixing this very soon because I am a neat freak who likes tidiness).
My records however go from oldest to most recent (by artist and when they began, not by when the album was released).
So It starts with The Beatles and other bands from the 60's on to 70's (Queen, Zep etc), 80's (most of the bands I have in this category began in the late 70's), ninties (Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters etc) and 00's (MMJ obviously).
And all inter-releated bands are next to each other like Yes and King Crimson, Old Pike and MMJ, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

I have Beat because I really like Yes and Bill Bruford so I looked for a King Crimson album with him on it and I really like it.
In The Court Of King Crimson was probably a wise choice though seeing as it's the first album.
But I think Bringdaruckus would probably have a more informed answer than me.

Why is that so unbelievable? The first time I heard about an mp3 was 15 years ago. Texting more like 3 years ago. I do digital music out of convenience. I can't hold on to a CD without scratching it or losing it. And I could never satisfy my OCD like K has with endless shelves of plastic CD cases. My music file is a beautiful thing though. It is better organized than a wall of shelves could ever be, it is much smaller, and it won't scratch and become unplayable after 2 listens, I don't know why more people don't go digital.
I do have a decent vinyl collection and burn CDs to listen to in my truck but I try not to mess with CDs.

Cool, K, I've got a copy of Brothers & Sisters on vinyl too. 8-)
I'm with Dylan on this. Went Digital and glad I did. Just don't have the space plus like K, my OCD would kick in. It's bad enough being just shy of being like Monk and have a 10 and a 6 year old. If I had more stuff out, I'd never leave the house.
DB and K- Nice!

QuoteI'm about to delve in King Crimson for the 1st time. I have In The Court Of...In The Wake Of...Larks Tongues & Red all on order. Good place to start?
All I can say is that they are a band that takes a lot of work to figure out, both musically and thematically let alone their ridiculous turnover. It's like a sports team, all that remains is the name. ;D
I think those 4 will be just fine. If you're not familiar (I have trouble thinking you're not DB), they are all over the place musically and many times, I feel like their albums really don't have any flow.
I would go chronologically...Crimson, Poseidon, etc.
As a 60's free jazz/avante garde fan, I didn't like some of the free form jazzy stuff on Crimson but then tracks 1, 2, 5 are sweet. Plus, as a fantasy RPG dork, I love flute (synth or real) that puts me in some medieval forest. That is where early KC separates itself (to me) from the prog to follow which always had a much stronger sci fi aspect to it.
Happy listening. I think they take more than one listen

Why thank you. Perhaps I should start a RPG dork thread
So I don't really have much going for CD organization these days, but I do have sort of a music shrine in the opposite corner of my room from the computer. I picked up the Apple Airport Express last summer so I can broadcast my tunes wirelessly into this business here:
I inherited this set-up when I got to college, my dad figured he got this deal when he was in college and now has paid entirely too much for a set-up that involves Klipsch speakers and a horribly EQ'd (I can't blame him, he claims to love classic rock but unless that genre also includes the Pet Shop Boys and copious amounts of Yanni and Vangelis [no harm meant, Andrew!], I think he might be misdirected...) component stack from the mid-90s, so he figured he'd hand this one off to me. The sound from these speakers (Infinity Qa's) is relatively incredible, though I have learned that you have to be very very careful with ribbon tweeters. I can understand why they phased these out, due to how fragile these suckers are (I've now been through two and haven't found one for any less than $35 on eBay. That's a pretty penny for being careless!), but the highs are incredibly crisp. For being over 30 years old, I'll stand by these suckers. Also, my receiver absolutely has to be tubed, seeing as how it's incredibly heavy and the sound is so damn warm. Plus, I'm pretty sure I can see classic tube guards through the ventilation slots in the top.
That said, I don't barely use the CD player, opting for vinyl when I'm going to go with anything physical (soooo I do believe..) --
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v351/eiseyrokker/DSC00519.jpg)
This is only half the collection (95% of it is my dad's handed on to me, with some serious classics, like first edition Zeppelins II, III, IV and Physical Graffiti), the other half being in a box in my closet. I'm about to move and I think I'm going to build a little shelf for my wall to hold all these suckers, as it's about damn time I have them all (Yanni and Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack included) on display.

A few months ago I was browsing in a record store when I came across a copy of R.E.M.'s Life's Rich Pageant. Now, I've owned that record for quite some time, but holding up the LP and gazing at the album cover I could actually see absolutely blew my mind.

I can recall getting that record the day it came out and we sat around drinking this and doing that, trying to decipher the magic. I saw that tour, too. Amazing.

So jealous. I wish I could have been a teenager during the IRS years.

very nice DB! [smiley=beer.gif]
you got re-organization skills like a MF'er. Did High Fidelity kick it in gear or no?
my collection is in CD books and this thread almost makes me want to put everything back in the case and on the shelf. If I wasnt moving so soon, I might just go for it.
Looks great dB (I just listened to Stands for Decibels) and satisfies even my OCD.
Where's your father's section?

(For a job well done.)
Thanks guys! Yeah HF did help to get me motivated...
Elvis shares the top shelf of Cabinet No1 alongside MMJ. Most of my Elvis CDs are in boxsets though, which are all kept in a drawer (they were getting dusty/scuffed on the shelves)
These 3 are pretty special:

Everyone's record collections look sooo cool.
We're getting floorboards next week so I've got to pack away all mine but I'll post some when my room's fixed and I've sorted out all my dad's old albums (which now belong to my sister but will be living in my room).

Hey thanks Meg!
I tried it at my last row home and the molding which I painted and nailed up to my rental ended up not being wide enough to hold the records and I didn't want to do any more damage to the walls by pulling em out and nailing in new ones.
So I waited until I moved into my new place which has many lengthy white walls. Definitely a lot more I didn't post.
I was wondering if any others put their vinyl up on their walls. I figured some do right?
Oh and for BBill, there's a Herbie Takin' Off up there for ya. Still steaming over you swiping that in the Island Draft.
That is awesome Ruckus!!

And to get back on topic, I recently built a new shelf to hold my cds, and was excited about getting them back out so they can breathe and be handy. To my surprise, I didn't have as many cds as I thought I did. But I've still got a few hundred...maybe 350-400 cds, not counting Jacket shows. Some of them are pretty tacky, and hopefully never revealed. But I've got them on there too to take up room, and the whole bottom shelf is cd-rs and junk.
The rest is alphabetized by artist (by release date). I used to have solo projects and side projects with the main group or artist because it was easier for a guest (who will usually have free reign to choose what gets played) to identify. Otherwise, they may not know who Richard Manuel is. But then I thought...wait a minute. Suggestions certainly are welcome, but I, as the host-and setting and lighting enthusiast, must be responsible for a good soundtrack for the evening's story. Therefore I want everything alphabetical. I don't have enough for genres, then alphabetical, but I can do this.
I do have some discrepancies though, like collaborations and stuff. For the most part, soundtracks will go in the alphabet by movie title, unless the whole album is one artist like the Fight Club soundtrack (Dust Bros.). But compilations are tough, because I don't know where to put it. Like this Canned Heat & John Lee Hooker collab. It should probly go with Hooker, but it couldn't be possible without Canned Heat, whom I have listened to since I was six years old. So it gets moved back and forth.
But I
will put the George Harrison EP in the J's. I won't put it in the Y's...I don't care what itunes does.
Otherwise...
I have a hundred or so LP's that aren't in any order yet. I'd like to get them alphabetized eventually, but right now it's pretty cool to have to look at each one of them until one jumps out and lets me know if it wants to be played. That's kind of a treat.
my dad collects signed records and hangs them along the top of the wall like a border. I can't help but wonder how many of those autographs are fake (he buys them all on ebay). Maybe half of them. :-/
How do you listen to the albums if they are hanging on the wall ? Just curious. Good looking nonetheless

I have that problem with most of the Jacket stuff because I can't afford two copies of everything...but for the most part, I have duplicates of all of The Band records.
