Title: (Virtual) Forum BBQ - Come On In
Post by: pawpaw on Feb 19, 2009, 03:36 PM
Hey guys! Things have been a little weird around here lately, so I wanted to throw a barbeque for everyone. It's a warm, sunny day today here on the forum, we've got plenty of food, and a fully stocked bar, so make yourself a drink and lets put the storm behind us.

This is a potluck, so just put your dish over on the picnic table (what did you bring, btw), and if you have a bottle to add to the bar table, let me have a test pull off of that before you set it down. We've got a bounce house, and a sweet sound system, so hopefully you brought some music too! Make yourselves comfortable!

St. John, I'd like to get you a drink if I can, and get to know you a bit. I'm sure you felt attacked, and I'm sorry I added to that. What are you drinking?  :)

Hell yeah I remember that.  It was fucking great.  It probably won't translate without your accent or personality but it was something like: "I don't know about you , Dylan, but for me it doesn't get much better than a fucking steak.  And I don't know about you but if I'm eating fucking steak it's gotta be a porterhouse (i think?).  You gotta have charcoal, fuck that propane shit.  It doesn't get hot enough.  You gotta get that motherfucker hot and grill the shit out of it for a couple minutes on both sides.  That's what I'm fucking talking about!"

What did I leave out? That was fucking classic!

yeah, I still haven't switched to charcoal.  :-[

Everybody say "Hi" to nicole and then I'd really like to join the BBQ.
I love BBQ, it's the greatest thing ever. Last year, when  my partents went away for holiday, we had BBQ seven days a week and it was awesome.
I was swimming in this (http://i41.twenga.com/4/tp/65/77/8119248515001316577.png) in pink in our pool, drinking beer, enjoying the sun and waiting for my food to get ready. Time of my life  :)

If you want, I'd bring the pool and a load of those funny pink tires (don't know the correct word here)

Wharf Rat, you strike me as being somewhat of a Dead historian...I picture this bbq going like the summertime Dead parties at Olompali in the late 60s. Without them as the house band though, I'm putting this one on the ghetto blaster now for you:

Also, I set up this zip line in that forest over there...

So, that should be pretty cool.  ;D Now where'd Crispy go with that herb...

*dips left over pork rib in this morning's gravy*

Good mornin' BH, coffee's ready.

I've got a question for you guys...I've seen pictures and heard mention of cornhole, and what looks like different variations here at the bbq so far. Now, I was introduced to a game called washoes from a dude who grew up in the midwest (awesome game with beverages) that was basically pitching washers at a large wooden box with holes...is that like cornhole? What are some of the other variations I've seen here, and how are they different? Or are they?

Also, we need to buy some new kegs for the day...what do you guys want to drink?

Ahh yes, bbill, Rancho Olompali!  Can you imagine the scene at those parties?
MMJ will do just fine as the houseband, eh?

Yeah, where's Owsley when we need him  :o

And if we can't get MMJ to play today, the park we're in (shown on my first post) is Dolores Park in San Francisco...these guys have a studio nearby in the Mission District, are available today, and are willing to play for barbequed pork.

The Mother Hips...

Good mornin' BH, coffee's ready.

I think the inception of cornhole came about in Cincinnati?  It is essentially what you are describing, with just a few minor differences.  Cornhole boards are slightly angled, and instead of washers, players are pitching bean bags (except instead of beans, they're filled with dry, hard corn).
I think the czechvar should remain.  That's a great tasting crisp lager for a warm, sunny day.  Might I nominate some Full Sail Pale Ale as a second keg?

Have you read "Garcia, An American Life" by Blair Jackson?  Man, between the Acid Tests and Rancho Olompali and the pure LSD driving it all, those guys must have been living in their own universe for that decade!

This is the style we play here in Missourah...

4 players.  2-Two player teams.  Your partner stands at the opposite end (20 steps away or so).  I throw and then then my opponent on my side throws.  (We play whoever scored last round, goes last on the next round.)   One point in the box and three points in the can.   Points cancel out.   In other words, if we both put two in the box, nobody scores.  If I put two in the box and my opponent puts one in the box, I get one point.  If I put three in the box and my opponent gets one in the can, he gets three and I get zero.   Play to 15 or 21.  Losers rotate out.   NEXT!

There is also this style which is fun, but I am less familiar with the rules.

One more thing, I prefer the boxes with the coffee can instead of the PVC, because there is an UNMISTAKEABLE sound of a washer going in the can that turns heads all across the park like nothing else.  ;D

The style we have down here in the Oklahoma region (and Kansas where a bunch of my buddies are from) is like your last pic, but a square, angled board with only one hole, and covered in classic astroturf. I don't have a pic of my set but I'll work on it.

Wharf Rat, I haven't read that book, but maybe I should check it out...there was a time when the Dead were living in Watts with Owsley and his acid manufacturing operation. The capping machine would blow a little dust out with each capping cycle...several rooms were covered in acid dust, and they literally tripped for months straight just from living and breathing in that house  :D

Hey BH, that bottom picture looks like the washoe boards I played on...I'm not sure of the rules, but it was damn fun!

Lets get that 175g frisbee flyin, what do you guys say? It's gotta be 175g...anything less, would be uncivilized  ;D (Seriously though, the disc has to have some weight)

I think it was in the book by Tom Wolfe they describe how the liquid acid solution was blue in color like that laundry additive stuff Wisk.
So they carried it in those bottles with their dirty clothes.

I know sometimes the apples at the front door of the Fillmore West had a little superhero in them.

But you are here, edtombell. ;)

In the aforementioned book, Jackson relayed an anecdote about the Watts Acid Test in '66.  When the Pranksters mixed the Kool Aid, they told everyone that a standard dose was 300 micrograms, and that their Dixie cups held 50 micros each, hence 6 cups for a standard dose.  Turns out they calculated wrong and each Dixie cup was holding 300 micros, so they were all dosed up with almost 2000 micros! :o :D

Alrighty then hand me a beer for now.
Lots o guess work back then, what is a microgram anyway.....
1/1,000,000,000of a gram, eyeball that,  hold on to your hat,see you in a week.
I read about a guy that had 10,000 hits liquid he mixed it with sugar and water made a big paste rolled it out on wax paper into a big circle
sliced it in half with a butter knife figuring that was 5000 doses he made another slice ahh.. 2500 hits he kept slicing to get something small enough to take, needless to say after about three days he realized that might not be too accurate of a way to measure.

Can you see the angels dancing on a pin.......Is that cake??

Well, I'm heading home guys...I told my wife that the barbeque was just going to be about 5 hours long...and that was like 3 days ago!!! They're probably starting to worry, and my head is killin' me...Thanks for coming!

There's still half a pig and a few bottles of cheap vodka left, so anyone still up for it can keep things rockin' if they'd like! I'll leave the bounce house for now...

Thanx for setting this up BB!  Good times for all.  I think I might hang out til this makes it to page 2 :)

Well that was pretty un-BBQ-like if I must say so myself.

who jizzed in your lemonade?

Im not sure who "my friends" are though. I guess you mean those guys from Philly, Leon and Mickey. It's funny how a bunch of people here act like I brought them here to cause trouble or something.

maybe you just need to lighten up and kick back, enjoy the rays, good vibes, and tasty grub, man

Maybe you're right. I should settle down and enjoyed the BBQ.  Tomorrow is Oaks Day in Louisville (Local Holiday related to Derby) and I'm off for a long weekend.  But...

Capt, with all due respect, I think you and those other guys are dumbing down the board a bit and making it easier and easier not to read this board anymore and I think that's a shame.  I guess that's why I suggested we kind of stay in our own worlds.

Never attended the BBQ yet, but I brought something that's a tradition of mine when ever I grill out.

And I'm not talking about bringing more dudes to the party.

OE, that's my choice for malt liquor too.

I used to have this cool St. Ides can, advertising the Tyson v Hollyfield fight (the bite fight), but the graphic was the original date, which was eventually rescheduled. It was unopened, a total drunk's collectors item...I'm pretty sure my wife found it and threw it out at some point. That thing was like a treasure to me...  :'(  ;D

I'll bring the generator to keep this baby cool.

I've got a few bbq pits going right now, timing staggered to keep the meat coming. Uncle Rico and I were up drinking and shooting shotguns out toward the Channel Islands all night, so we got an early start on digging the pits and getting the coals going...first round of beef and pork by lunch. What did you guys bring to the potluck?

In the meantime, we've got a cold keg of this...
