Title: Fantasy Baseball??
Post by: Clarkwork on Feb 15, 2009, 09:13 PM
I know last year we had a pretty good fantasy baseball league in Yahoo.  Anyone from that league going to start one this year?  If so count me in.

Definitely.  I'll go ahead and start it soon unless Walt beats me to it.  I'm looking forward to this year.

Walt and I are also talking about doing a pay league this year through fanball.  Do you want to do the 25 or 100 dollar buy in, Walt? I'm cool with either.

Oh yeah, I'm in! I'm for WHIP too (baseball thread), we can get rid of K's/9. Whip is more important. I can and will set one up, unless some one else wants to (no rules against having two either). You can mark my brother down, unless it's going to be all jacket fans, BUT he did go to the Omaha show with me. If need be, I can get some of my buddies to fill. Man I'm excited.

Dylan, I'll do whatever. I'm not really sure how it all goes down. If we go the $100 route, winner gets $600 and some points? Whatever "points" mean? I have some questions about it before I throw down, you know? Simple questions, like how many people are in the league, can we even be in the same league, categories, positions, payouts?...I'm sure you get the point.  There's questions, but I'm down.

I did a mock draft yesterday and there were a few people who had done fanball and said that their payout is the best especially for second or third place.  I still don't know exactly what points are either but I guess you can buy stuff with them.

It looks as if we could start our own league and invite people. There are 10 people in each league. Here's an explanation of the categories:
QuotePoint-style scoring with points awarded for 8 hitting stat categories (singles, doubles, triples, home runs, runs batted in, runs scored, walks, and stolen bases) and 6 pitching stat categories (wins, saves, losses, innings pitched, strike outs, and earned runs).

Should we do a free league and a pay league?  I'm down for both.  I say we go for 100.  If we're gonna do it, let's do it, you know? As far as positions, I'm having a hard time understanding the FAQ on that one.  It seems like there are no bench or DL players, which would be weird, but wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

Alright, looks like we need two signups:
Free (yahoo) League
1. Clarkwork
2. aMD
3. Walts

Pay (Fanball) League

I'm down with a 100. Thanks for answering questions. Some of my friends do their football league through fanball. If we start a league, do we have to pay the extra commissioner fee I wonder? Oh, we're doing both (free and pay). I usually have 8 baseball teams between two profiles. Which doesn't lead to as many first place trophies as I would like, but oh well, it's for the love of the game.

Cool. I can try and commish the pay league if you want to get yahoo started Walt.  By the way, my buddy from last year (yes, the one who dropped Milton Bradley) wants back in.  He's serious about it and will keep his roster updated, if he can figure out how to do it.  If I promise to give him a tutorial on how to play can we let him back in.  If not, it's cool, I also plan on being in many leagues this year.

Alright, looks like we need two signups:
Free (yahoo) League
1. Clarkwork
2. aMD
3. Walts
4. Foxtrot
5. (aMD's friend)
6. (Walts bro)

Pay (Fanball) League - $100 buy in.
1. aMD
2. Walts

Players in parenthesis are pending league approval or the need to fill spots.

I was looking at fanball...we can join a public league together, I think. What would be sweet is if we could make a league, and then open it up to the public. I really don't like this whole not having a bench thing. What's the point of even looking at your team? You don't have to change anything. It's pretty much just draft, and wait until the end of the year. Unless I'm way off, which I could be. I like having daily updates. Absolutely no problem with having your buddy join Dylan. But it's still early to be drafting any league. I mean I'm excited, but I don't want to jump the gun here.
Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball??
Post by: aMillionDreams on Feb 16, 2009, 05:18 PM
I got you.  I figured we could set up the league and get everyone signed up and set a reasonable day for the draft.  I signed for a league that doesn't draft for another 5 weeks, I thought we could do something like that, but it's your call.

I don't like the no bench thing either but maybe we're reading it wrong and there is a bench, it doesn't seem like it though.  I'll check if there's a fee to set up the league, they probably just take a cut before the payoff.  We might as well make our own if there's no fee.  I REALLY wish there were bench players!

If we can get enough people that we know to sign up we can do a pay league through any service using this one website that acts like an escrow account.  Everyone sends their money to it and then at the end of the season the commish reports how to pay out. Everyone would have to have some level of trust in me, but I think I could get enough people to vouch for me on here that people shouldn't have a problem. It might be more complicate setting up but it would be a better payout and we could use our own positions/stat categories.  Just a thought. I don't have a the name of the website right now but I can dig it up when I get home.
Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball??
Post by: .Walt on Feb 16, 2009, 07:14 PM
I think I know what website you're talking about, but I can't remember the name. I believe it's started by the same guy who started Fanball.

I don't want to sound like a stickler, but I don't really wanna be in a league without updates, we have time to find one. I was looking through yahoo fantasy plus custom leagues, and a bunch were talking about paying. I don't think people would pay someone random over the internet like that, there has to be something more creditable through yahoo or something.

Yeah I'll set up a Jacket League after I post this message. I'll set it up for a later and flexible date.

That's the site. Apparently there's a check and balances system so that the commish doesn't have total power of the payoff.  I'm liking this option but it's really up to other people. Do you know anyone else who'd want to play, Walt? Hopefully we can get a few on here, too.  JonT? BoS?

yup, that's the website alright.  I really don't care who joins, more people we know the better of course. But through LeagueSafe could we join a league we like? Or start a league that people would join? It doesn't look like it's possible.

I could probably find 4-6 people to join, but probably not at $100. If we could set it up for $50 or so, I think I could get it filled.

I think we could set up a league through yahoo and have people send their money to leaguesafe as an entry fee. We could ask our friends, people on here, and even post to other boards (yahoo message board??) to find people.  We just need at least 8 people willing to pay to play.

on another note.  what you do know about keeper leagues?  do i need to get a yahoo plus account, or whatever to get into one of those?

EDIT: I was thinking 100 might be too much for most.

that sounds like a great idea, if it can work that way. Not sure how keeper leagues work over the internet without knowing anyone. We talk about doing that every year in my football league. But it's always turned down, because it's once you go keeper, you can't go back to the old way without fucking people over.

I read the FAQ, it can work that way, but they can't guarantee everyone pays.  They will send daily nagging emails to people who haven't paid.  So it'd be best to know the people who are joining.  I'll start asking around and let's see how many people we can get at $50, I suppose the pay out would be 250 for 1st, 100 for 2nd, and 50 for 3rd.

Hey guys,
Big baseball nut here.  I'd be in for either league.  Unfortunately, I can't commit to it 100%.  I have little ones who play, and with me coaching, it is sometimes hard for me to commit to it since the draft day/time can become a problem.  And I hate to autodraft!
I guess what I'm saying is I would like to join up, but if you guys have people who can commit no matter what the circumstances, they can certainly take the spot that might have gone to me.

Ive never done baseball and Im not sure if I really know enough/watch enough baseball to draft a competitive team.

Ill do it if you need someone to round out 10 or 12 for the league, otherwise itd probably be better if someone who knows what they are doing plays instead of me

I just signed up, are we using the same rules as last year?  I remember it was cool last year because everyone stayed with it all year and we didn't have anyone dumping players or doing anything crazy.

Although I do remember somebody dumping Milton Bradley when he was leading the league in hitting and just won the Player of the week award.  :)

If you dont want your competition seeing what you use and since Im not playing in these leagues, feel free to PM me  :)

Dude, same rules apply.  Just make sure their rankings are based on a standard format than make adjustments as necessary based on your settings.

Typically I do used Yahoo, Espn and a variety of other smaller sites googled that have "UPDATED" sheets at draft time.  I have a good idea of the top half of the players but its the bottom half where comparison shopping seems to go a long way for me.

I might be a guilty party of not signing up.  I guess based on aMD's first post on this page (4) that I was thinking the pay league had not been set up yet?  If it has been set up, I will go ahead and register.  If the pay league is a no-go and we still need bodies to fill out the free league, I am up for that too.

Looks like the pay league is dead in the water.  We'd love to have ya in the free league though.  My two buddies should be signing up soon, too.

 ;D ;D

No, it's Matt.
Reds fan forever.  I was 3 and 4 when the Big Red Machine were playing in back to back Series in 75-76, so the memories are pretty vague.  The 90 Reds and that World Series was awesome.  I turned 18 at midnight the night they swept.  Fun memories!   :)  One playoff appearance and a one game do or die playoff game since then.   :-/

Sorry for that ramble, but I love this time of year with march madness around the corner and spring training starting.

You've got a few years on me.  I grew hearing stories of the Big Red Machine and even got to meet them at a Card Show in '92.  Pete Rose shook my hand and gave me a wink.

I was nine when they won the series and that was equally as life shattering for a kid growing up in the cincy area. Not much since then, but hey, we have history on our side.  We can say our team didn't win during the steriod-era because they did it the old-fashion way the whole way through.  I still believe Griff and Dunn were always clean.  At least Griffey wasn't using the kind that helps you recover from injuries.  ;)

I think our Reds have a shot at making a run this year.  They play in a tough division and they need their young talent to grow up quick but they seem to have a lot of young talent these days.  I hate to say this, but getting rid of griff and dunn may be the best thing for this team.

Yeah, I'm also excited.  ;D

I agree with you, I think we'r better off without Jr. and Dunn.  I'm really not sold on Dusty, though.  Can't get over his love with the veterans (Corey Patterson, ugghhh).  I really hope Jaque Jones isn't this year's Patterson.  Anyway, Dusty said in the Enquirer a few days ago that this is what he's always wanted, youth and no huge stars/egos.  Time will tell.

I really like our pitching and our young core of position guys.  Harang will bounce back, Arroyo will be good for 12-14 wins and respectable ERA, Volquez I think is the real deal, same with Cueto.  It's early in Spring Training but Homer and Owings look to battle it out for that 5th spot.  Phillips, Bruce, Votto give us a good middle, and hopefully Taveras pans out.  EE has it in him, needs to get and maintain confidence.  All in all, I'm optimistic, but then, when am I not in March.  :)

Not looking for too detailed of a review, but seeing as how this was my first fantasy baseball draft, can anyone let me know how I did? I dont follow baseball anything like football, so this was pretty difficult for me. There were TONS of players Ive never even heard of taken, and some probably as high as the 10th or so round.

I think I started off good and did well for about the first 8 rounds, then fizzled the next 8 or so, but I think I did I did good over the last 12 rounds. However, I have a feeling those middle 8 rounds where I missed out on the value is going to kill me. I know in fantasy hockey its nice to have position flexibility where guys are listed at more than one, so I took that into account, but not sure how much thatll factor in really. I thought I stole Ben Sheets, and then 10 seconds later I find out he's out until August or so. Ive turned into that guy I used to laugh at at fantasy football drafts  ;D.

28.       (335) Iván Rodríguez (C)

The most obvious things to me even seem to be Im screwed at catcher since we start 2 unless IRod gets a starting job and my pitching depth seems pretty shaky. If Carpenter has a comeback year, that might be my saving grace though. Im not too big a fan of my outfield after Holliday either.

Is Brad Penny worth a pickup? Any guys who might still be available worth a flyer since Im going to put Hudson on the DL anyway? I was looking at Brian Giles and Garret Anderson maybe. JP Howell since I could probably use another RP?

Can't tell.  The format is preposterous.  2 starting catchers?  Is it Roto or H2H? The number of statistical categories is too much for me.  I liked your stretch of Scherzer, Nolasco and J. Lopez.  In a 12 team format, you top 5 picks are solid too although with ridiculous amount of categories, I couldn't really tell you at all.

There, some useless feedback
Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball??

I'm not huge on the stats. Even though I like leagues with a bunch of categories, some are silly. I think you have a good club, I think. Have you joined our league yet? I know you're not the biggest baseball fan. I'm not the biggest hockey fan, but I've been playing fantasy hockey for 3 years now, and I either get first or second. I try drafting a bunch of red wings or pens. So with baseball, draft a lot of yankees or red sox. Last year I took a lot of tigers. I guess that's my advice, draft players on teams that are good. I'm currently waiting to draft. I have the 3rd pick, in a very small league. I usually like to draft a 6 man league early. I like having one team that is just stacked.

now back to getting my mind right.

Well, here I go ;)  Normally that would be a great day/time, but that is the end weekend of my wife's spring break week and we will be out of town.  Actually, we'll probably be in the car, driving back home.  I don't know if the final decision is a pay league or not.  If it's not a pay league, I can just set up my rankings and do it autodraft style, and just be a maniac on the waiver wire.  If it is a pay league, what are the chances we could move it to later that evening?  I know the evening slots go fastest, unfortunately.
Also, if I'm the only one who has a conflict with this time slot, maybe it's best just to leave it alone?  Changing it might lead to problems with multiple people.

Headdy, I'm ignoring everything you post in this thread until you sign up

Wharf - I'm pretty sure the evening slots are taken.  I believe we decided to make this league a pay league but only at 20 dollars, although we haven't from everyone about that yet.

We still need more people, so if you're thinking about signing up, stop thinking about it and do it!

since we're doing 20 and not 10. we should think about payouts.
100 for playoff winner
30 for second
30 for regular season winner

Quotesince we're doing 20 and not 10. we should think about payouts.
100 for playoff winner
30 for second
30 for regular season winner

That works, but gets confusing.  I don't want to have to write three checks to make good on my 20 bucks.  We could arrange it so that one person sends their money to the reg season winner, one person sends it to the second place team and everyone else sends it to the winner. But that would make it:
120 for playoff winner
20 for second
20 for regular season winner

How about:
100 for playoff winner
40 for second
20 for regular season winner (I know that's not much, but usually the reg season winner will take one of the other pots)

btw, I think my buddy Todd (Red Rage) hasn't signed up yet.  I was hoping we could get him and two others from the boards to make ten, but if not eight works too.

Just talked to Todd, he's going to sign up soon and he's down for $20.  That's means we have 8, two more would be nice.  I think we had two people say they'd play if we needed them to.  Should we have them sign up?

Whichever works for you guys.  If its Thursday, my roommate who knows his stuff will draft for me.  If its Wednesday, I might have to bail out of my kickball league for one night to draft.  Either way, I'm good so you guys decide what works best.  I'm flexible.  If it was a $1,000,000 keeper league, I might have some reservations. :)

I see we've been stuck on 7 for awhile . I talked to my roommate, and he's in for 20. So we have 8. Now all we have to do is draft!

Two more days till the draft ya all.

Looking forward to it.  Not sure if the commish, (Walt?), has checked the league home page, but Ruckus was asking if we could move the draft back to Thursday.  I can do either night, I just wasn't sure if anyone had been in contact with him.  Sounds like he is going through his depth chart to try and find someone to fill in for him tomorrow night.
I also posted a question about a couple scoring categories, but that's not as important as managers being able to draft.

yeah, I saw that Ruckus wanted to change the draft time, but it was too late. I suppose I could have stopped by, and said something about it.

As for the questions, I see what you're saying about CG, and yes there will ties. But if your players gets one or two, it's huge.  With 8 teams, everyone will get a couple or more stud pitchers, so CG will happen.  As far as IP, yes the goal is to have more innings pitched than your opponent. How much your pitcher pitches is really out of your hands. But you do want your pitcher to go as long as he can. Injuries are part of the game, and there's 3 DL spots. I draft Rich Harden every year, and I know he's good for missing 5 starts a year, and a couple stints on the DL, it just happens.

Innings pitched and total bases are in because I like those stats, but more importantly it's for people who do their roster everyday. There's nothing worse than losing to a player that doesn't do their roster. With IP and TB's, the person who does their roster will win those categories like they should.

Gotcha, I like the thinking now that you've spelled it out.  Looks like we might have some comp. for Harden this year.  He's such a stud when he's on, but so damn frustrating to own!

So can someone clear up when the draft is?  I see that someone has Thursday the 26th at 730 eastern but I got an email from yahoo today saying it was tomorrow at 730???

The draft is tomorrow at 7:30 Eastern.  It's on the homepage, which you'll have to find by tomorrow in order to draft.  Try this link:

Well, I thank my buddy from Chi for drafting for me.  I've never been in an 8 team league where everyone fields an all star team.  Should be interesting.

Post by: aMillionDreams on Mar 26, 2009, 08:01 AM
I feel good about my team despite missing out on bwebb.  That's the first time that's happened to me.  That was such a difficult decision, bwebb's my boy but good starting pitching is easier to find than Lance Berkman numbers.

And I don't want to get too up on my team because I realize everyone is loaded.  Well, except my buddy Rich. If you all don't wanna let him in next year, I understand.
Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball??
Post by: wharf rat on Mar 26, 2009, 05:24 PM
Hey Dylan,
I hope there's no hard feelings, man.  It was a tough decision for me to take him, and I was a bit out of sorts when I went in with a plan and completely overturned that plan with my first two picks.  I've never taken OF-OF with my first two picks and I was just all out of whack after that.
With the 8 pitching categories, I definitely felt like Webb was the best overall out there, so I grabbed him.  I hope I didn't break some unwritten MMJ rule with this league :-?
Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball??
Post by: aMillionDreams on Mar 26, 2009, 05:50 PM
No man, I can't let him slide to the fourth round and expect nobody to take him.  I knew what I was getting myself into when I took Berkman.

Besides everybody knows BWebb's my boy even if he's not on my fantasy team this year.  He's a monster and part of me thinks it's cool you and others put so much value in my ex high school teammate.

Good luck this season, brother!
Title: Re: Fantasy Baseball??
Post by: .Walt on Mar 26, 2009, 06:37 PM
I know my former high school teammate isn't a cy winner, but he made the 40 man roster for the dodgers. pretty cool. He said when Manny walked into the outfielders meeting he came in and shook everyone's hand, and it was like being around a rock-star. I don't see him breaking into the show this year with the dodgers outfield being so deep. Just last year he was talking about quitting baseball to go back to the NHL. He got drafted in that too.

Good stories, fellas.  So, Dylan, you went to Paul Blazer HS?  If so, get ready for another coincidence.  My sister's family lives in Ashland and the kids go/went to Paul Blazer.  My nephew Luke Bonner is a sophomore at UK this year.  He began college playing football at Wittenberg, in Ohio.  Blew out his knee and transferred to UK this year.  My other nephew Ryan, will graduate this year from Paul Blazer and is heading next year to EKU to play football.  Also have a niece who is in 5th grade there.  The boys talk about Webb all the time, they've met him once or twice as he seems to visit the area quite a bit.  Hell, maybe he still lives there in the off-season?
Walts, what's your boy's name?  It's fun to follow people when you hear anecdotes like these.
I've got nobody from my HS in the majors (some of my brothers' buddies played a few years), but we did play and beat a team in the District Finals my senior year that had Jay Payton.  I played SS and I've never had a ball hit harder to me than the two hopper he hit to me that game.  Was on me in a flash and I still barely threw him out!

yeah, I went to Blazer.  My sister graduated from there last year so she would definitely know at least one of your nephews  (it's not a large school).  That's crazy that we have so much in common and we found each other on the jacket board. anyway.

I used to work with Bwebb's brother at Waldenbooks and Brandon would always come to see my high school band play.  I used to date his wife, Alicia (who has been quoted in SI. weird.). Bwebb and I played together in Babe Ruth league.  He was always good but didn't become a stud until he went to UK and learned that sinker. I was genuinely surprised when I heard he got a scholarship to UK.  Now he's clearly the man.  Bwebb's a real down-to-earth guy.  His whole family talks with that slow draw.  And he still lives there in offseason.  I went home to see some family and the street Blazer is on has been renamed Brandon Webb high school. Crazy.

Anyway, I'll be rooting for my boy, regardless.

It is crazy all the common things we have going.  I look forward to meeting you at some point down the road.  Not sure I'll be able to make Jacketfest that first weekend in Aug.  Possibly I might be able to do it if it's moved to that forcastlefest weekend, but I'm pretty sure I'll still be coaching my older boy's hardball team.
Anyway, yeah Webb's sinker is the nastiest in the majors.  He does seem like a real down to earth guy, it's good to know that he still is heavily involved in his hometown.  I assume your sister's last name is Greenwood also, I'll ask my nephews if they know her.  I'm sure they do, they're really good kids who seem pretty universally liked.

My buddy, Jamie Hoffmann. He actually kind of got lucky as far as getting into MLB. He was already drafted and playing juniors for hockey, and played summer baseball with the legion team. turns out there was a scout at a tournament. Long story short, now he's on the 40man roster. Wish him luck!

I've got him this week, so I probably shouldn't be talking.

So who is still left in the playoffs? I see The Tennesee Fire, BWebb Machine and Situational Lefty. Haven't really conversed with you guys too much this year. I'm Chi-Town Bombers. Good thing my fantasy team is playing better than the cubs this year. I probably just jinxed my lead over Bwebb by bringing them up. are we collecting $ for this league or what? peace - Eric

What's up Foxtrot?  Yeah, this Cubs season has been despicable.  Not sure if you read the solid Onion article on thanking Piniella for not allowing Cubs fans to get overexcited about their team this year.

I know this fantasy season has been a challenge for me.  Having lost Reyes and Peavy and not well understanding the scoring format, it took me a while but man, am I greatful that my team kicked it in gear at the last second.  Had to go 11 wins or better the last 3 weeks to squeak in to the playoffs.

Shall see what happens.  I need TFire to take it easy on me.

I tell ya, I don't know exactly what went down with Situational Lefty but whatever the pep talk was or the PED's he took, 50 wins in 4 weeks is ridiculous.  I saved my moves for playoff streaming but man have I been lucky with lights out pitching.

I'm not sure I got one more week in me
